So /k/ has an interesting thread up about some proposed changes to export regulations that may affect a lot of different things. Gun forums are up in arms because merely having "technical discussion" online will be the same as export, effectively banning technical discussion of firearms online.

I think this goes further than that, and will also affect crypto, possibly making it difficult to share or discuss software with strong crypto, because all distribution of that info online would be the same as export.

This is immensely crazy but I'm sure you've all noticed that they are flinging absurd big-brother regulations at us left and right lately.

Because this is an alteration to an existing regulation it does not need to go through Congress, it can be made effective at any time.

Some think this has to do with the cases against people that shared plans for 3D-printed guns online, but I suspect it reaches far far beyond that

Just wanted to bring it to your attention. I think a good way to fight this might be an intentional black-out across sites that would be affected. Put up a banner saying why you shut down, in protest of this regulation

I think the best thing to do would be to contact actual gun websites and gun channels on youtube, since the concept of "technical discussion" is incredibly vauge and basically everyone could be effected. Even the normalfags could be up in arms if someone like FPSrussia becomes effected by this law. The important thing is getting info out and getting it out now.

I think it would be good if some tech sites carried it, rather than just the smattering of 2nd amendment sites that have noticed it so far. I'm not 100% sure that crypto is part of this though, crypto is under EAR and not ITAR but the entry in the register mentions EAR a bunch too. I'm not very good at deciphering legalese

The relevant entry starts in the bottom right corner of page 1 of the PDF, with the heading "DEPARTMENT OF STATE"

The proposal does mention software but I can't figure out what it really means

My guess is any software related to firearms mechanism or technical details, which might even get a few games like World of Guns off the market.

Not just firearms info but also other controlled software, that includes software with strong crypto.

Pic related is basically the moneyshot of this whole thing. Mentions software specifically, then the next paragraph is where they redefine posting on the US internet as the same as export.

This really needs to hit tech and privacy sites, and I think it will soon

Apparently this is the place to go if you want to spam their inbox with legalese and delay the process.

Fuck it. I have absolutely zero faith in a rigged political process for affecting change. It's just the latest in many, many planned violations to Internet freedom.

Let's build our own Internet. The government gives us the finger all the goddamned time. Let's give them the finger.

It ain't fancy but it's a start. And it's a damn sight better than playing this game by their fucking rules all the time.

I don't know what it is about legalese. Some people have the aptitude for dissecting it and contextualizing it in a bigger picture but it all just blows straight over my head. What I do understand is that a society that has many laws is a corrupt society & that's why I like the idea of just making a clean break and building our own shit.
