That's because what we term communist economics can work at a very small scale because you can effectively allocate resources and know individually what people want and need, which immediately falls apart and falls behind market allocation if the scale is increased. I doubt it's classless (which makes it not that communist really) or that it holds any of the same social backings of communism, so I doubt most marxists would care for it.

This. Communist communes, yes. But as long as man has something to feed his ego, they are probably using religious piety as a substitute for the foundation of a social hierarchy (i.e., I am a more religious than x person, which make me a greater asset than x person.) Some Amish communities, Orthodox Jewish communities, the FLDS and far-right Christian traditionalists á la Duggar family are similar in this respect.
