Oh shit. What if Cadance and Shining used a surrogate mother?
What if the surrogate was Celestia? That would explain her being able to deliver the mutant Alicorn babby, since she's so big.

I've never witnessed a childbirth but I could only imagine it would turn you off of sex pretty damned hard.
Between Shining being reluctant to sex with Cadance and the struggles of raising a child, their relationship will undoubtedly waver.
I mean, it's only a matter of time until Cadance gets fed up with Shining's refusals and does the quick and dirty with another stallion.
Of course Shining will eventually find out, and word will travel fast around Canterlot of an affair in the royal family, but by that time it won't even matter; their marriage is over.
They've been drifting apart for months, so they don't even try to reconcile. They don't even go through the trouble of getting a divorce, either. It's just not worth it to draw more scandal to themselves.
Shining Armor eventually becomes too depressed and quits the Royal Guard, retiring.
He becomes disgusted with himself, since he sees that his denial of sex with Cadance is what caused the whole schism.
Since Equestria is evidently a matriarchy, coupled with princesses like Cadance holding end-all power, Cadance recieves full inheritance of the Crystal Empire as well as custody of Flurry Heart.
In a fit of hysterics, blinded by rage from tireless fighing, Cadance places a restraining order on Shining, barring him from setting hoof in the Crystal Empire.
Shining Armor, homeless and without a posession to his name, goes to his sister Twilight Sparkle, the only one he has left in his life, to stay at her castle.
Twilight is sympathetic at first, but soon becomes aggravated by Shining's attitude of self-hatred, as well as his occasional lashing out at others.
As the years trudge onwards, Shining Armor becomes extremely spiteful and develops a drinking problem. This gives rise to violent tendencies, such as hitting Twilight, sometimes drunkenly and sometimes sober.
Twilight is heartbroken by her brother's horrible downfall, but she has no choice other than to evict Shining onto the streets. It's for his own good, she tells herself.
A missing pony report is put out several weeks later, but the ponice search parties have come up inconclusive as of yet.
Twilight blames herself for his disappearance and is traumatized, becoming a hermit and eventually driving away all of her friends.
Meanwhile, Cadance has suffered many sleepless years trying to raise an Alicorn princess without a husband and father figure.
Flurry Heart is sheltered by Cadance, not once being let outside the Crystal Castle.
A private tutor is the only other pony she interacts with for her entire childhood.
Cadance has also spiralled down, giving herself up to a life of promiscuity, promising stallions 'sex with a princess' in many a dark alleyway—for a fee, of course.
She often abandons Flurry Heart for nights spent drinking heavily and having uncontrolled sex, sometimes not returning for two or even three days at a time.
Princess Cadance's obscene behavior causes Celestia and Luna to revoke her status as Princess of Love. This is the first case of such a thing happening in recorded history and causes a great outcry across Equestria.
Cadance eventually commits suicide from the horrific publicity, leaving Flurry Heart an orphan in care of Celestia and Luna.
They love Flurry Heart, yes, but it is not a parent's love. It's never quite the same.
Flurry Heart grows up sad, bored, and alone.
Shining Armor is never found.
In the end, the undeniable truth is this:
FLURRY HEART SHOULD NOT FUCKING EXIST
