Starlight showed up right after the DBZ battle with Tirek as well, which made her seem like a better villian just by comparison. Starlight also had the advantage of being atypical of villians in the genre, so the deviousness of her plan could be revealed over the course of the episode. It is a pity that they then undercut it in the finale by giving her that silly backstory.

It could've been better, but it's not as bad as people say. Like the story how an apple fell on Newton's head and he suddenly realized how gravity works, which of course is bullshit - but it easily could've been a first impulse or something of that sort. The fact that Starlight told it in some way, doesn't necessarily mean that that's exactly how it happed or that it was all there was to it. Now I'm not saying that it was done well (it wasn't), and some criticism is definitely justified, but some of the hate it gets is kind of like being mad that a character in some show said something factually incorrect as if everyone was 100% factually correct in real life.

IMO the fact that she wasn't evil just for the sake of it, is a good thing. As I said, the backstory could've been better, but I don't dislike the general idea. Many communists weren't evil selfish villains and genuinely believed in that stuff. It's just a question whether you prefer the "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" types (Lenin/Trotsky maybe? Or someone else…. I'm not sure how much those two believed it. More than Stalin, that's for sure.) or Stalin types as villains.
