How to Pallet Garden

How to make a pallet garden.

The apartment complex I live in was going to let me make one of these. They are space efficient as fuck, and can hold a surprisingly large amount of plants. OC pics as season picks up

Pallet gardens are excellent alternatives to large gardens for growing smaller sized vegetables, herbs and ornamental flowers. Garden blogs and garden websites are noting pallet gardens as an up-and-coming trend. We decided to build a
pallet garden and found that a few modifications to the original designs really make this garden suitable to plant production. Schools with limited budgets and space can benefit from growing pallet gardens. Lumber costs can be expensive to
build raised beds, and many schools simply do not have the space to plant raised beds let alone traditional gardens. Below are the LSU AgCenter directions and pictures to construct and plant a pallet garden.

Materials Needed

1 pallet, a staple gun and staples, landscape fabric, soil and
seedlings.

Step 1. Find a pallet. Don’t spend money on a new one; visit a
local dumpster or speak with a grocery store manager. Pallets
can often be found behind large stores, but first ask a manger
as sometimes the delivery trucks recycle pallets saving stores
money.

Step 2. If any of the pallet boards are loose, nail them securely. If old nails are sticking out remove them. We don’t want students tearing their clothes or worse injuring themselves on old nails.

Step 3. If the boards are really rough lightly sand to prevent splinters.

Poor Culture

Hi /poverty/. I have a friend who recently graduated high school. He can't go to community college right now because he can't afford it. He got a job at Chic-fil-a, but he doesn't work for very long hours so he doesn't make too much money. His dad demands a monthly rent of somewhere between 300-400 dollars. He barely has any money leftover. He tried to convince his dad to let him put the money in a savings account for college or other important things instead, but his dad just said "A man provides."
The reason I bring this up is because I'm wondering if there is a "poor culture" within a significant amount of poor people that makes them want to prevent other poor people from achieving a better life or becoming successful?
R: 0 / I: 0 / P: 1

Sup /poverty/. So I'm basically getting disowned by my family because they make my life a miserable existence and I need a couple tips on essentials that I need to get.

I have an interview on Friday for full time fast food and have a place lined up that will cost around $550 (CAD) a month plus better internet if we decide to upgrade and I'd pay the difference on what they currently pay. The place has heating, water, hydro all inclusive and there's a shared fridge/freezer, washer (no dryer), and oven with a convection stove for making soup and shit.

What essentials aside from food will I need to live and how can I get them at a good price? I have clothes, shoes, winter stuff, sheets, laptop, a PS3, a small TV, a garbage bin and some other small stuff to take (or borrow) with me? Is thrift stores good for cheap clothes hangers and rack?

R: 60 / I: 8 / P: 2
Anyone done any dumpster diving?

I've only done it a few times, with a couple more experienced people. There was a group of grocery stores we would scope out. Sometimes there would be a bunch of stuff back there, plenty of great vegetables, enough for several boxes to be filled. Some places also throw away cakes and things. We once had an industrial size freezer full of discarded, high quality ice cream that lasted for months.

Anyway, something I learned from this is (1) use a headlamp, headlamps are great and (2) grab up some wax cardboard boxes from these places too, because wax cardboard is great to have when you're making a fire.
R: 7 / I: 3 / P: 2

I want to explain why you are all in this mess

I'm not blaming you, I'm blaming evil people who try to rule the world unfairly. I'm hoping that by teaching you, you may know the world you live in slightly better and as a result be more successful. peace.

How to get rid of Bed Bugs

So since I'm posting this here, obviously throwing my shit out isn't an option. I put covers over my box spring and mattress, but they just laid eggs all over those. I've used a steamer a few times, but it doesn't seem to kill them all that long, nor does the poison spray. Does anyone have any methods on getting rid of them better? I'm seriously hoping you guy can help because I've been living with them for a year, and because they're only in my room, my dad doesn't care enough to really help out that much. I've read they're only supposed to feed every few days, but I have them on me every night, and I think they've begun living at my computer desk/on the chair, I even find them living on my flip flops sometimes. I'd occasionally catch them on my school bag last year, but I ditched it. Thankfully they don't travel on my clothes, so at least I can have a social life.

Non-poor people regret stories

Hi guys, nice board. Short story time.

>Be on train

>Blasting headset
>Guy walks by with a sign asking for money for bread
>Am thrown off by beggar on train while expecting cart-checker
>He doesnt ask me personally since im just 19
>He goes on through the door
>Regret not giving a few euros
>Get off train to transit
>See guy
>Didn't give him money again
>Bought expensive lunch item
>Ate it all on my own

I feel like shit again, its not like i couldn't have given the money to him.

So, got that off my chest.

Can we talk about the irony of /poverty/ paying for an ad?

R: 5 / I: 0 / P: 2
OK poverty people, it's time to ask yourselves: Why should I learn how to pickle things? Then answer, because it's really fucking easy, cheap, and tasty. You can keep your veggies (and eggs and bacon) longer if you don't have a fridge and make things more varied and flavorful when you don't have heat to cook with.

must have: salt, water, and jar(s).
more fun to have: vinegar, sugar, spices.

Pickling basically involves chopping up vegetables, dousing them in salt, and then leaving them in brine (salt water or salt water and vinegar plus spices to taste) in a sealed jar to get more and more delicious over time. Vid shows a way to make some sweet and sour carrot pickles.

Things I suggest you attempt to pickle (because I have and it was great): Carrots, beets, cabbage, hard boiled eggs, bacon, onions, garlic, peppers, and apples.

Let's have a thread about foodhacks, or recipes that YOU have created.

Here's mine:
If you want to make rice taste better, you can mix soy sauce into it. The Japanese apparently do it too, but not in public as it is deemed rude and impolite.

Get paid to review music

http://www.slicethepie.com/?wyd=1019958

Pays between $0.08 and $0.25 (depends on grammar and number of adjectives used) for short, 3 or 4 sentence reviews on music by unsigned bands. To be honest you're only gonna make like $5-$6 an hour (if you can type while you listen to the 90 seconds of each track) but it beats the shit out of pay-per-clicks and surveys and shit and it's actually pretty fun.

Protip: on Fridays they have a promotion where you review clothing which pays MUCH better, as the reviews take maybe 30 seconds each and it's a flat rate of $0.20 per review. When it gives you the option to pick places you buy clothing from, select all of them, not just the ones you shop at. It'll give you far more reviews to do and even then you're gonna want more, trust me. Made almost $15 in half an hour on the clothing shit before it ran out on me. So don't make my mistake, pick ALL of the fuckers.

>I am extremely tolerant and have an attitude that if I hate someone, I'm going to keep it really secret from them
>so I keep putting up with them
>they keep reminding me though of how ridiculously poor I am, how I work for food rations and pocket change, and go through dumpsters
>they all are able to buy things easily and with little thought which takes me months to acquire
>it all gets to me
>my coping strategies fail
>I leave the conversation

>cut away some of my hair afterwards
>get on here

I have so many problems preventing me from doing basic things in life and I struggle every day to get better but for years I have been in a severely shitty situation and in two years time if my plans fail I'm just going to disregard reality completely and mentally desert my body, I'm just going to shutdown, and ignore the outside world and any people talking to me. I'm too chicken for straight up suicide but I don't want to be sane in a world where there is absolutely nothing for me because I am all around inferior dysfunctional being.

Banned TED Talk: Nick Hanauer "Rich people don't create jobs"

>Via Business Insider: "As the war over income inequality wages on, super-rich Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer has been raising the hackles of his fellow 1-percenters, espousing the contrarian argument that rich people don't actually create jobs. The position is controversial — so much so that TED is refusing to post a talk that Hanauer gave on the subject. Normal shampoo isn't necessary to wash your hair. You can use baking soda or vinegar and even then, those are optional.

Egg whites can be used to tighten pores and their yolks can be used as natural moisturizers. Rose, coconut oil, jojoba oil, vitamin e, aloe, and oatmeal are also optional moisturizers. Manuka honey has anti-inflammatory properties and can aid blemish scars.

Tea tree oil is also helpful for some people's acne, but others are too sensitive. Lemon juice diluted in water can also help clean your face on a budget, but it will make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Simple baking soda and water could also be used to wash your face and apple cider vinegar diluted in water is a nice toner for oilier skin.

Thrifty Life Hacks

From a 1948 pamphlet of household hints:

1. Make homemade room or closet deodorizer by mixing some diluted ammonia with fresh water and letting it sit out in a bowl overnight.

2. To erase fingerprints and spots from wallpaper, rub stale, soft chunks of bread in even vertical strokes.

3. Remove paper stuck to a wood surface by allowing a few drops of oil to soak into it and then rubbing it gently with a clean cloth.

4. Clean varnished surfaces with a cloth dipped in cool, weak tea. Tea also makes a good fertilizer for house plants and acts as an insecticide.

5. When you crack a dish, put it in a pan of milk and boil it for 45 minutes. The crack will usually disappear and the dish will actually become stronger.

6. Deodorize jars and bottles by pouring a solution of water and dry mustard into them and let them stand for several hours.

7. Pour hot salt water down your sink and tub drains once or twice a week to keep them free of grease and odors.

8. Sharpen scissors by cutting a piece of sandpaper once or twice with them.

9. Chill candles in the refrigerator for 24 hours before using them so the will burn evenly and not drip.

10. If a pot lid loses its knob, put a pointed screw through the hole and twist a cork (which is heatproof) onto it.

So I saw this board was dead.

If anyone comes back to it, what do you think would help the poor more, government assistance, union action or partial ownership in their workplace?

Hey /poverty/ I created the /mlmhate/ board and someone was kind enough to share my here.

So I'm going into a maritime program out in Seattle. The program costs enough 21,000 thousand total. I have about 70k in series ebonds. How do I live cheap for the year.

I am considering the following expenses.

>Rent (I've found ads on craigslist for places 800-1000 per month nearby, within walking distance of my vocational school)

>food
>utilities including high speed internet
>occasionally clothing, my shirts keep shrinking
>gym (I've seen gyms that cost)
>My mom is still willing to pay for my Iphone and I am still on her insurance.

Any other important costs and tips and tricks to cut back on cost of living there or necesarry things I need.

Thanks guys!

How do poor people starve/go hungry? It's so easy to obtain food, I can't remember the last time I had to use cash on food. Whether it was food stamps, shop lifting, dumpster diving, etc. I've traveled across the U.S numerous times, via numerous ways, and never struggled with food. Are you one of those people that stay fucking up? Why?

>Homeless woman fined for building her own home
>The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has charged Necan with breaches of the Public Lands Act that carry fines of up to $10,000, and up to an additional $1,000 fine each time she is caught continuing to build.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/homeless-woman-fined-for-building-her-own-home-1.2824688

As an unorganized township, Savant Lake doesn't have a municipal leader. Denis Mousseau owns the only store, across the street from his hotel, on one of the community's two main roads.

"It's a common thing for First Nations people to do, is build their own house without title to the land," Mousseau said. "First Nations people have the right to do that and I don't see why [the Ministry of] Natural Resources should be hassling her over this."

Necan has boarded up the unfinished doorway to her cabin for the winter, and said she feels "shattered" by the charges against her. Her next court date is Nov. 20.

"I still keep going with this fight no matter how awful it makes me feel for trying to house myself and help people, because a lot of people don't believe in themselves or that things can change if you fight hard enough," Necan said, her voice cracking.

"It's what I try to believe. I try to be hopeful. That's hard too and a lot of times I cry by myself here. But I talk to my [late] mom and my [late] dad and it keeps me going because I keep thinking of them."

Hey /poverty/, I will be moving out with a friend of mine to an apartment soon. We will both likely be making around minimum wage when we rent it. tl;dr: I took some camellia sasanqua leaves from a yard, gonna see if it makes decent tea or what. currently drying the leaves out.

So, tea is made of camellia sinensis (pic 1)

a shitton of people plant camellias in their yards, but not usually c. sinensis

instead they plant c. japonica and c. sasanqua and others. anyway I decided to google around and see if its possible to make tea from these other types of camellia…the answer seems to be yes, although the results for it aren't very abundant:

>camellia japonica

>camellia sasanqua:

The leaves have been used for centuries to make a form of tea and the seeds or nuts have been a thriving Japanese industry long before there were any written records.)

>Oligarchy, not democracy: Americans have ‘near-zero’ input on policy – report
http://rt.com/usa/us-democracy-oligarchy-policy-512/

"Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association,” the authors say the data implicate “the nearly total failure of 'median voter' and other Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theories [of America]. When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy."

If you don't have a rice cooker…wtf are you doing?

- Cooks rice. obviously.
- steams vegetables, but i'm sure you knew that.
- cooks noodles
- cooks oatmeal
- Also bakes bread. Yeah, home-made bread: http://insunee.blogspot.com/2011/11/no-knead-bread-in-rice-cooker-it-dont.html
- makes yogurt: http://insunee.blogspot.com/2011/10/making-homemade-yogurt-in-rice-cooker.html
- warms things up as good as/better than a microwave (e.g. put pizza on the steamer rack, some water in the bowl, and you get warm pizza thats not all dried out)
- makes giant pancakes: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2014/06/14/how-to-make-epic-pancakes-with-your-japanese-rice-cooker/

to quote one of the links up there on why you would use a rice cooker instead of whatever else, "Efficiency experts have probably already picked up on one of the hidden benefits of this method: less stuff to wash." Plus I don't know about you guys but at times I have been without a stove, oven, microwave, etc.

Cold brew coffee…holy shit it's good. Tasty as fuck and you only need time, water, ground coffee, 2 containers to steep it in and something to filter it. No heating element necessary at all.

I did 1/2 cup of some generic ground coffee, like Yuban or something I dunno

put it in a mason jar, added 2 cups cold water, covered it and let it sit over night (supposed to be 12 hours)

Then I popped a coffee filter over another mason jar, secure with a rubber band, and poured the coffee into it to filter it, took a few mins

so then it's done. I heated up a cup of water and poured in some of the coffee syrup i had created until it reached the ratio I wanted (looks like more plain water than coffee syrup, to me), and damn its tasty. would taste great cold too or with milk/whatever.

thought i'd post it here since it's something you could make even while living in a car

Get on in here poor alcoholics.
The stuff tastes like ass, smells like ass, drinks like ass, and gives you a hangover. But is it worth it? I guess that's up to you. This is the simplest form of fermentation, all you need is a container that is acid and solvent resistant, (acids and alcohols are formed during fermentation) water that has been boiled and sat (this gets covered when you boil the wort) And a source of sweet sugars. This includes glucose, fructose, sucrose, galactose, and maltose. These are ones that can be fermented with no added steps involved in brewing beers. Just mix and let sit.

>A good list of sugars that are fermentable >http://byo.com/stories/issue/item/1441-sweetness-brewing-sugars-how-to-use-them<

>What we are dealing with, >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilju<

First step, find your container. 5 gallon buckets work great, and you can just stretch saran-wrap over the lid opening with some holes poked in it for an airlock, or some loosely placed tin foil scrunched over the top where it is on the snug, but not air-tight. >http://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Food-Grade-Buckets< Make sure you clean it well, use clean water to wash it out with a very dilute bleach solution, then rinse until you can't smell anymore bleach on the bucket. If you do use soap instead do a secondary wash with just water as the soap will try and leave a film.

I know Sikhs will feed people that come to their temple. I've only been to one once but they gave us tea and something like pic related which was breddy good. The service was pleasant, honestly I don't remember it well but I didn't feel like I was sitting through something ridiculous. From what I understand of the religion it's against trying to aggressively convert people.

Anyone else know some places to get a decent free meal?

Profit from Crisis: Why capitalists do not want recovery, and what that means for America

http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2014/05/15/profit-from-crisis-why-capitalists-do-not-want-recovery-and-what-that-means-for-america/

>While conventional economic wisdom holds that capitalists should be just as anxious to see recovery as workers, Jonathan Nitzan and Shimshon Bichler argue that it is actually in capitalists’ interests to prolong the crisis, as their relative power increases in times of stagnation and unemployment. Using U.S. data from the past century, they find that when unemployment rises, capitalists can expect their share of income to rise in the years that follow.

Hello /poverty/, regards /fringe/

NEET master race reporting in, I'm impoverished as fuck, and work for food rations twice a week for a few hours (don't get paid unless there's a little spare change someone gives me but gets lots of food!)

I'm mostly poor because I have some serious issues with insomnia and also went through years of severe depression and had a shitty regrettable childhood.

I'm getting better though with the practise of magick having helped me in so many ways in life.

Here are some books that might interest anyone who wants to focus on making money; I myself do not focus on that right now as I have higher priorities that need to be sorted out first.

http://www.yogebooks.com/english/atkinson/1900thoughtforce.pdf

http://www.yogebooks.com/english/atkinson/1908secretsuccess.pdf

http://www.yogebooks.com/english/atkinson/1910psychologysalesmanship.pdf

William Walker Atkinson was a very successful occultist – and business man – and many other things all at once! He really lived what he talked, a very respectable man indeed. I highly recommend everything written by him.

One of the most important things for anyone impoverished is to learn contentment with the bare minimum of things; and even when deprived of the essentials to main their poise and inner-calm. Then you will not suffer so much and be so sad, even if you are in impoverished condition. You can still work to become richer though, there's really no reason for any mystics like me to stay poor forever, indeed there are highly enlightened persons who've been incredibly wealthy and had palaces in the past. The thing is not to become attached to wealth and not to let wealth control you. In this regard, there is considerable virtue in a plain ascetic life, with not much of the concerns and worry of say running a business or an empire.

That said poverty can also get in the way of achieving life goals and that's not a good thing. One should work to improve themselves, to accomplish goals; to do as they will. It's just important that as go about our work we do not make our happiness dependent upon success but rather can maintain an optimal mental state the whole way through and regardless of the outcome.

If you guys want to talk to me about this more come visit >>>/fringe/ ! I answer all questions and have much more to say potentially!
