I know Sikhs will feed people that come to their temple. I've only been to one once but they gave us tea and something like pic related which was breddy good. The service was pleasant, honestly I don't remember it well but I didn't feel like I was sitting through something ridiculous. From what I understand of the religion it's against trying to aggressively convert people.

Anyone else know some places to get a decent free meal?

Eh Sikhs are pretty cool guy that doesn't afraid of anything, but it depends on the guru.

Sometimes the back of major food chain stores with just throw (sealed) food behind the store if it is going to expire soon. Got a ton of tasty pastries that way.

i read about a couple that went to random people's funerals for 20 years to get free meals

The homeless shelter gave out pretty decent meals for lunch. Salvation Army was giving out food boxes once a month. AA gives out coffee and sometime cookies. Religious centers. That's all I got. … Also Hari Krishna temples usually give out free food. The one I went to let me fill up tupper ware also.

A friend of mine files for food stamps as homeless. Supposedly they give you double the money.

Do you know how he does that? Does he just not have his name on a lease anywhere?

Every state's online application system is a little different, with hers it was just a section where there was a drop-down box for the living arrangement or something like that, choices being rent, own paying mortgage, homeless, etc.

My friend is squatting in a foreclosed house with the home owner, and there's no lease so she is technically homeless. But even if there was a lease, they don't get filed into a database anywhere so there's no way for the state to check that.

Huh. What state are they in?

I'm in Cali and I've applied for aid, and it seems like they're a bit more thorough than that where I live…I wouldn't have the balls to say I'm homeless with what I'm doing now but I'd say squatting in a foreclosed house counts.

Apparently it's also done by county, at least here, because they've had to move my files around when I move.

I can't speak to how things are done in California, but here in Florida all the benefit application is done online. Sometimes they call you for a phone interview, but that's it. They actually closed most of the welfare offices.

If you're squatting in a place without a lease, you definitely have no worries about applying as homeless status. There's nothing on paper saying you live there.
