If you are in frequent contact with these people you are trying to scam, try talking about the stuff you want. No need to make it lengthy, just shit like "I really want [object], it seems so cool", although you will need to change the wording to whatever might fit your character. If the person replies with something like "Why don't you get it?", just say that you are too poor atm, and move onto another topic.
