Web programming total noob here
I need to write some javascript that monitors a chat page. Any time there is new text that contains a certain word, it alerts the user. How is this done?

1: Don't use JS
2: Make a desktop app
3: Stop shoving everything in the web
For an actual answer, be more specific. What is the chat? Is it some ad-hoc AJAX crap? Is it just IRC? What do you mean by alert? There are too many questions that you don't answer OP.

Sounds like you could make a greasemonkey script that scans a certain tab on an interval and ping when it comes across something new.
*shrugs* I dunno though. What chat service is it?

One way to do this would be if the server/site that hosts the chatpage provides an API.
Otherwise plug a standard IO to your port 80.
Since a webpage is HTML with maybe JSON (i.e. plain text) you can now unleash the whole power of pattern recognition on that character stream.

write a pidgin plugin, use irc. javascript web chat is for morons.
if you need to make a website, use frames and meta refresh and search text on the server.
