I generally use the nvi text editor, running in a urxvt terminal.

I use microsoft word. You can color parts of it to make it easier to read. Just make sure to export as a plain text file when you need to compile it, or it won't work.

Not only will it teach you how to use a programming language but some of the other stuff you need that helps with every other language.

Then learn ASM

start with installing some linux distro, then learn a programming language or two. maybe an easy language followed by c++.

play around with other people's code. have a look at minetest mods and some game engines, write something easy using irrlicht, etc.

when you get bored with your beginner distro swich to gentoo or similar source distros. arch is a waste of time.

learn assembly & write some simple virus. then experiment with entry point obfuscation, as in not writing an appender that changes the entry point to the added code.

No one uses C, just use python which is simplified C, front-end devs still use C#, and engineers use C++. I recommend Visual Basic (try to download the less bulky VB express 2010, not visual studio) as a first language, most malware that is handed to me is coded in it. There's plenty of people and resources out there.

I think the "math is/isn't essential to programming" argument is mostly people bickering about definitions.

Some people regard math to be "school math classes". Like rigid topics that you need to formally educate yourself on.

Other people take a more loose definition. They just say you there are some broad topics that are useful to programmers that you should know.

I think if you can think logically, you can usually pick up whatever math you need when the need arises. It's probably helpful to know some math ahead of time, but ultimately, if you're not a doofus and you know how to read wikipedia/wolfram alpha, you should be fine.

Install any UNIX-like OS, ideally either a *BSD or any GNU/Linux distro that's not intended for beginners. Then install gedit for a text editor because making you learn Vim or Emacs before learning programming would be painful. Then pull up a pdf or a hard copy of a book, start thinking about something to create, and create it.
