Last Thread: http://8archive.moe/qu/thread/929/

You're up early in the morning and in between a simple, but filling breakfast and the morning paper, you brew Siji's elixir to dull the pain of her trauma on the short term, as well as the brew to enhance cognitive function, and mix the two together. There is no mention of Siji's parents' deaths in the newspaper, but that may just be because the press hasn't caught wind of it yet.

Siji is sleeping in, but given yesterdays potion that is hardly surprising. It does mean that Natas shows up while she's still sleeping though, which is convenient since you just have James install him in a room without having to explain why Siji slept over and the circumstances about it in general. After all, she deserves to be allowed to decide who gets told when. When she does awake, she is not much better than yesterday, being largely apathic and passive, simply going along with whatever motions you physically guide her to. After drinking and the elixir taking effect, she gets better, though she does seem a bit confused.

Siji: "I feel…. weird… Is this the same Elixir you gave me yesterday?"

Eona: "Well I tried to improve the formula." Which is true, just not the whole truth.

Siji: "So I'm your guinea pig?"

Eona: "Uh…" Truth be told, you hadn't considered that angle.

Siji smiles faintly "Don't worry. I know you're just trying to help. Besides, I would probably say yes to being your guinea pig if you asked me to. I trust you Eona."

That was… sweet if in a somewhat odd way. But enough about that, onwards to the matter at hand. "Thanks Siji. I was wondering… I know you told the constables about the things you saw yesterday, but do you want to talk about it with me?"

She shakes her head, not entirely unexpected, but you did hope. Prying more bluntly for details about it would be awkward to say the least and an opportunity to learn more might crop up during the day. Regardless, you can always try the direct approach later and nothing is likely to be lost for it. Which just leads to the question of what to do with her for now. One thing is certain though, you're not leaving her alone.

> Go out somewhere together (specify where)

> Ask her to help with your research into divinity (If this option, come up with an excuse for why you're looking it up or come clean with your ambition)
> Ask her to help researching something alchemy related
> write-in

Rules:

This is a continuously, low-paced quest. This means rather than running sessions, I'll be checking in every couple of hours to make a new post, unless I am asleep. I will under no circumstances update more than once an hour.

If it is time to update and no consensus has been reached between the options, I will try to combine the different choices taken. If I cannot think of a good way to do that, I roll between them and go with the outcome.

If rolls for success are called for, I will take the best of the first two rolls for the time being.

How the shit does this happen?

Eona: "I see. Maybe you can help me with something then, if you're feeling up for it?"

Siji nods "Sure. What is it."

Eona: "I'm researching the gods and the circumstances of their Ascension to godhood…" Siji tilts her head slightly and cocks an eyebrow, the question unspoken but obvious all the same. You decide to answer honestly "I mean to discover how they Ascended and do so myself." Trying to explain your thoughts on the matter further probably wouldn't help anything, so you simply stop talking, awaiting her response. Siji thinks about your words for a moment, then responds "I believe in you. If anyone can do it, you can." She states with firm conviction. That went easier than expected. "And I think maybe by father's work can help you. He is…" she looks down briefly at this point "was an Archeologist. We moved here because Kethesia is more open to that, but he hoped to get enough recognition to get to study the Aurantico ruins beneath Castle Arcem. I don't know that much about his things, but if I recall correctly, he believed that the ruin was supposed to contain the tomb of one of their gods."

> Go fetch her father's research notes with her

> As above, but bring James for protection just in case.
> Stay where you are and look in your personal library for now.

And that would be me being retarded for not thinking that you might want that. My apologies.

You decide to go get Siji's father's notes on your own, while Siji stays behind along with James. The trip itself is uneventful in general, and while there is law enforcement present at the site, Siji's father's study was deemed to be of no relevance to the case so they let you in after the constable Siji gave her statement to verifies that Siji is temporarily living with you. Digging up the notes doesn't take overly long, but as it turns out there is quite a bit to carry. It looks like her father has been working on this for a while and taking quite diligent notes, which is probably going to prove a good thing.

When you return to your manor, you are greeted by James, but something seems off and as you get closer, you notice two wet blotches on the front of his clothing and accompanying holes in suit.

James: "I'm afraid we have had an uninvited guest Miss."

James explains that a man wearing a dark green cloak and a mask had snuck up to him and stabbed him in the back, and James had turned around and punched him, breaking the mask, a tooth and possibly his jaw, after which the assailant had fled. From the location of the stab wounds and the fact that they went all the way through, it is clear that James would have died more or less instantly if he had been human. Luckily for both him and presumably Siji (whom James assures you is busy reading and unaware of the attack) James is a humonculus. This means that while he appears human to all but close scrutiny while in his element, he doesn't possess true sapience and instead works off of a complicated system of contingent commands. The fact that the attacker didn't come prepared for a humonculus reveals that he is either incompetent or foreign, seeing as humonculi are extremely rare outside of Kethesia. But for now, what to do about it.

> Report it to the authorities

> Don't report it, but let Siji know
> only tell your private investigator

Additionally, if you choose to report it to the authorities

> Give them the mask fragments and the half a tooth

> Keep it yourself for your investigator

Eona: "James, please keep the mask fragments and the tooth for Mr. Yeron and make an appointment with him to recieve it. Otherwise, clean up whatever mess the intruder left."

With instructions given, you head to the library to talk to Siji. She probably needs to know that whoever was after her parents appears to be after her as well. You find her occupied with reading some of your books on alchemy, probably intent on keeping up with her studies as best she can given the circumstances. When you enter, she looks up and asks "Did you get them?" Her voice has a faint tinge of excitement at first, apparently looking forward to helping you with your ambition, but she notices your serious expression and her tone drops back down to emotionlessness. You nod and hold the notes out to her "Yes I did, but while I was gone there was an intruder. Probably the same person that killed your parents, but don't worry, James fended him off."

Siji looks at you for a few moments, her expression understandably worried "I… Should I go somewhere else? I don't want to put you in danger."

The truth of the matter is that depending on why the assailant is going after Siji now, her moving might not really change anything but make her more vulnerable. On the other hand, it might mean you won't be at risk.

> Go along with her worries and have her live elsewhere.

> As above but pay for guards of some sort or other for wherever ends up going.
> Reassure her that you will get increased security at the manor that will keep both of you safe.

> Reassure her that you will get increased security at the manor that will keep both of you safe.

3c625c No.3033

>>3031
You shake your head "No Siji, I don't want you going somewhere else." You raise your hand, palm outward to stop her as she opens her mouth to object "I will get more security for the manor, so we can both be safe."

Siji is silent for a moment before asking "Are you sure?"

You nod "I don't want you to be in danger any more than you want me to." You silence any further objections by giving her a hug "I will go take care of it now, don't worry about it okay?"

She nods and you walk off, pondering.

Fundamentally, you have three options for increased security. You could buy defense humonculi. They wouldn't be high quality human-facimili like James, and they would have a hard time acting outside of the parameters of their contingent command system, and since it would be standard models, researching their capabilities wouldn't be that hard. In return, you would be able to get a good number of guards and their loyalty would be total.

You could also upgrade James with additional capabilities aimed at better security and protection. Since you would be doing this yourself, figuring out that it happened at all, let alone what upgrades you made would be more than a little difficult, and James' loyalty is beyond question. This would arguably also be the largest amount of firepower you could get. In return, it means you can't spread out or split up the protection if the situation calls for it, pretty much forcing you and Siji to stick together until the situation is resolved, and if James is taken out you have no other defenses.

You could also hire guards. Their loyalty wouldn't be guaranteed, but they would be more capable at handling odd situations and even if researched successfully, they would be harder for the assailant to predict.

Or you could make a serious dip into your savings and combine two of the options.

>Buy Humunculi

>Upgrade James
>Hire Guards
>2 of the above (specify which)

You order a mix of Sentinel and Enforcer humunculi, the former for detection and ranged support and the latter for heavier combat duty. You decide on express order, meaning they should arrive tomorrow afternoon. You don't expect another attack before that, especially if James' assessment that he broke the assailant's jaw is correct, and their timely arrival should give you time to work on James' improvements in peace. Technically, you are probably going to go a bit beyond what is legal in terms of private security with upgrading James as well, but not moreso than what a good lawyer can weasel you out of. Besides, you don't mean to advertise James' upgrades to the world.

Now you just need to decide what sort of James upgrades to get materials for.

You decided that being able to detect threats and react to them as soon as possible is paramount. A few minutes later you have worked out exactly what you will need and written down a list. You'll be getting that via the family business instead of buying it from a third party, since it is both cheaper and harder for others to track that way. Then James notifies you that Natas has left.

> Go check in on Siji

[X] Go take a look at Natas' work

3c625c No.3193

>>3187
Siji is probably well able to keep herself busy between studies and her father's notes, so you decide to go take a look at Natas' work. While the circumstances around Siji's parents has kept you busy so far, your curiosity about the suspect circumstances of his work is far from sated.

His things are neatly organized when you enter the room and you carefully memorize the location of everything as you shift through it. The things don't get any less suspect as you read on. The list of possible applications of this work dwindles rapidly to the point where you're fairly certain the person who commissioned it is either insane, stupid or working with Necromancy, which is all sorts of illegal. Natas won't be in legal trouble himself if this gets to the authorities, but it would lead to a load of uncomfortable questions and whoever he's working for probably would be in trouble.

That being said, whoever it is has taken a great deal of care in making the instructions for the work in question give little to no hints about his or her identity in the process, which makes the 'insane' and 'stupid' hypotheses unlikely. You probably won't get any further with this unless you either actually partake in the work or somehow sneak something off for your investigator to take a look at.

> Try to sneak off the comission instructions and replace them with a copy

> Try to arrange for the investigater to come pick up the evidence from the assailant himself when Natas isn't around
> leave it be for now (approaching Natas about it later is still an option with this.)
> Write-in
