ffc321 No.2733[Last 50 Posts]
In a odd world of machine and magic, different yet connected to ours, live humans and fairies across the lands. In this world, the people enjoy lives under a fragile peace that comes and goes.
Today, the worst day has finally arrived. It was long feared that this day would come, and now it has come as terrible as they feared. It was the worst-case scenario in the predictions of the Guardian Office:
The Abyss Fleet coming ashore at last, in great force.
The Abyss Fleet were the mechanized, warlike undead of the sea. Defying our ideas of common sense and proper knowledge of how natural laws work, these undead legions of flesh and metal rise up from the darkness of the sea. Time and time again, the Abyss comes to lay waste to the living, with powerful naval weaponry, and an unsatiable grudge that spurns on their assaults.
On this day, one island and its people would be prey. Fishermen's ships further out to sea were the first to be taken by surprise, and too slow to make the warning. The hapless fishermen were preyed upon by the circling Abyss destroyers. The I-class, Ro-class, and Ni-class destroyers as they were called, were shaped much like torpedoes with the bestial features and ways of sharks, with eternally-hungry grins and ferocious bites. These destroyers did not bother to shell the wooden boats. With jaws wide, steel teeth gleamed under the light of day, and came down on wood and flesh, as the screams of humans sank beneath the waves. shelled the meager defenses and proceeded with their age-long practice to slay the herds of the living and harvest them as sustenance for themselves and the growth of their already-immense numbers. It was all according to the instincts left in them by the shadow of an old war, buried in a distant, strange eternity…[1/2]

Soon, the sea around the island were infested with schools of the warlike dead. On the island, both humans and fairies scattered in many directions to evade the hungry predations of the Abyss making a beachhead and slowly making inroads into the island.
Some fairies took to hiding inside small nooks and crannies, while others followed as the humans did and scattered amongst the village roads and eventually into the woods, trying to escape sight of the Abyss beings, and yet, their scent was an easy trail for some of these metal beasts.
With little effort, Abyss cruisers light and heavy, overran the docks, shelled the meager defenses and proceeded with their age-long practice to slay the herds of the living and harvest them as sustenance for themselves and the growth of their already-immense numbers. Wooden houses and thatched huts were blown away into innumerable splinters in an instant. Some Abyss, trapped in their aquatic, clumsy forms, could not cross onto land, but those that do, had human shapes to drag their bodies out of the sea. It was all according to a hazy memory, driven on by thoughts that plague them…
"NEVERFORGIVESINKWITHMEBURNITALLMEVERFORGIVE..."
Wa-class transport ships scoot their lumbering bodies across the island, dragging their hungry bodies and heavy cargo holds –a pale, fleshy belly merging into a massive steel tank to carry great volumes.
The island is filled with the cries for help, and terror, as the streets prowl with humanoid Abyss creatures. Some humans tried to ward away the Abyss by trying to scare them with fire, pools of oil lit on the ground bursting into flaming pillars. This was nothing for the Abyss, who scoffed at the attempts to frighten and hurt them, how little it was, a tickle compared to the power of naval artillery. Easily withstanding meager, mundane resistance and desperate assaults, a handful of Abyss light carriers, cruiser and Abyss heavy cruisers herd the humans they capture, and feed lines of them into the waiting bellies of the great Wa-class. With a wet, sloshing sound, the bellies split open at their lips, and push in their human and fairy cargo into the waiting darkness inside.
Overhead, the scene of carnage was witness by a reconnaissance plane. This tiny Zuiun seaplane buzzes overhead the site of carnage, and doubles back in a staggered, winding route back to its origin.
You, the aircraft carrier girl Kaga, watches the plane make its landing approach. The plane, with a tiny fairy at the helm, makes its way back to a lady clad in turbine gear and plane launching racks, the seaplane tender Chitose. The Zuiun seaplane makes a slow landing back, where its guided by hand onto its launching rails, held much in the way of a puppeteer and marionette.
"It's a worsening situation," Chitose says. "The civilians have to get out somehow, or they'll be Abyss food."
You – Kaga, Chitose, Akebono, Maikaze, Ushio, Nagara, are the fleet that's made it past the blockade so far.
It's up to your team to break through and buy time…

>>2736 (You)
There's a saying long ago that goes, "the greatest number of people in the world, are those that are dead". From that idea, comes the phrase, "The Great Majority".
In this world, The Great Majority can't seem to find peace, and the living find their way of life under threat by the innumerable Abyss fleet that embody the Great Majority. For a long time, the human and fairykind and their armies have ceased turning their weapons at each other, in face of the struggle against the embodied shadow of death at every shore.
It seemed that human civilization, scattered amongst the islands was doomed to a decline, helpless to be culled like cattle, as they mobilized great amount of forces, being matched with equally great, or innumerably great amounts of Abyss, and outmatching the living armies pound for pound, man for man in firepower.
The answer was a force similar to the Abyss, but coming from "the other side". As fairykind were born "of the land", coming into existence with the ever-present essence of magic all around, their help and their very nature was essential to reach into "the other side". Through this connection, did a miracle emerge. A being similar yet different to the Abyss, but just as powerful. This sort of being that emerged was a peculiar female, with a memory and characteristics of its past remembered life from beyond. With the knowledge of this put to use, human and fairykind put themselves to task and gave them the tools to fight back the undead.
Collectively, they were the fleet girls, where one ship girl has naval firepower carried to the scale of a human person. Despite the regular human size, the assistance of fairies with each ship girl made it possible to wield immense firepower, where it would be impossible for humans to wield at that size. Several classes of ships exist, where each ship girl would belong in:
Destroyer
Submarine
Light Cruiser
Heavy Cruiser
Torpedo Cruiser
Light Carrier
Aircraft Carrier
Battleship
and many others, according to the nature of their being.
True, no human military would want to have all that power concentrated, and entrusted in a single soldier, but this is not a normal human navy. To coordinate and unify the efforts against the ever-present Abyss threat, the Guardian Office was established. Each naval base of the office across the many islands of the world is staffed by a structure of Admirals, regardless of their age or origin. Across the world, each naval base has their own fleet of ship girls, originating from the navies of different lands, as recorded from knowledge of "the other side".
With every shipgirl and the record of the past coming to the surface, with each one pushing back the Abyss incursions, the seas, inch by inch regain the chance to become peaceful again…

KAGA
=
YOU are the flagship for this fleet, the aircraft carrier Kaga. If it were to fall on someone to be level-headed and cool on matters, it would fall on you to do so. The rest of the other girls rely on you right now to have a grasp on what to do. Right now, this carrier fleet, though cut off from the rest, is still lively and colorful, and it seems like the six of you can take on the challenge for as long as you all would be needed to.
Right now, the report from the recon plane indicates that harvest at gunpoint is ongoing, with token resistance by civilians. They won't last long at this rate. The sea around the island is being blockaded and the civilian ships can't even begin to escape without people being spotted. A sizable amount of Abyss monsters are stuck on land, hunting down any fairies or humans hiding.
Right now, Chitose is equipped with seaplane bombers for recon and attack, pulling double duty for artillery shelling and as a backup carrier. As far as speed goes, with the help of a turbine backpack, she can hang in there with the other two speedy, evasive, Destroyer girls Akebono and Ushio, who have turbine backpacks to push them to speed as well.
This is unlike you, whose entirety of equipment is almost entirely dedicated to carrying and launching planes, hanging back. Your stock of planes was for breaking the blockades, being equipped more for dive bombing, fewer for torpedoes, and a token force for aerial defense. This setup is much unlike Nagara, whose capability to carry heavier cannons means a longer reach and the first to be able to react and fire at the front…

You give the order. "Alright, Chitose and the DDs, move out at full speed, form up like a separate detachment!"
Akebono and Ushio form up at the front, with Chitose and Maikaze in the rear row. You can hear the turbines roar, as the four of them lean in, and skate across the sea, faster and faster. You thought Akebono grumbled and said something, but it was muffled by the roar of the turbines. From behind, you can see their speed has picked up, their watershoes parting the water around their legs, their wakes growing large with the water being jumbled behind.
Maybe you could subtly coax a grumble out of that DD when this is over?
As it is, your fleet is slowly approaching the circling blockade of Abyssal destroyers, and the island is now in sight, but the shore is still quite a ways from here…

You reach over to your quiver slung at your back, and notch an arrow, aiming for a high arc. Your fingers pull back, drawing the string, gathering up strength, and release. The sound of the arrow rips through the air, gliding for a brief moment, before the arrow takes the form of a Zero fighter, wtih a fairy riding on top. The plane acting as-recon banks around and dives into the distant chaos, amid the smoke and explosions.
Up ahead, you can see the three destroyers and the seaplane carrier harrying the blockade…
===
Meanwhile, Chitose, Maikaze, Akebono and Ushio at the front find themselves in a a tight spot, like a chunk cheese and a nest of mice charging in. Hemmed closer, dodging swips from the occassional destroyer, the four of them thinned and harassed the blockade, and took down destroyers that looked like easy pickings. The waves of Abyssal ships making up the blockade, darting about, gave illusion that they were many enough to stain the waves totally black.
"Fucking DDs, how many did they throw into this mess?" Akebono spits, as she unloads a double dose of 12.7mm shells into a destroyer's maw. The blast shreds the Abyss destroyer from the inside out as its kibble splashes into the water.
Overhead, a couple Zuiun seaplane bombers make passes at other patches of Abyss ships, tagging the occassional light cruiser and riling up several other destroyers in a beeline, bobbing at the plane like a low-hanging fruit, flopping into the water again, and flopping out of the surface trying to nip at it. Some of the smarter destroyers open up their mouths and spray out a couple rounds of anti-aircraft fire, but this leaves them open for an artillery shell aspirin that soon follows. Thankfully, Maikaze is quick on the take today , getting those precious shots in.
"This harvest day for them seems to stoke their animal urges," Chitoe says as she catches one of her planes for a resupply. "There's so many of them, that I haven't seen any of them suddenly being smart to just use AA fire…"
===
The Zero fighter banks into the rising, pillowy pillars of smoke rising up from the scene of carnage. Fire and smoke shroud a proper view from above. The shadows of figures could be seen in and out, with some human shapes struggling against similar figures, and some not-so-similar ones, with the occassional fattened, roly-poly shape of the Abyss' Wa-class transports, hovering a bit off the ground. In some parts of the flattened, burning village, some of the Abyss beings have staked out a couple spots, with sizable numbers nesting temporarily…

EARLIER:
An island faces the arrival of "The Worst Day", as the Abyss Fleet rolls in and makes landfall, slaughtering with one hand, and harvesting people with the other. As humans and fairies scatter and escape, others put up a token, desperate resistance, and other unforunate ones are coralled into the waiting, cold, wet bellies of Wa-class transport ships, facing an uncertain fate in the bowels of the cold darkness that laps up warm, living flesh.
YOU are Kaga, aircraft carrier of her namesake ship class. Right now, you've gotta take the heat off the front line of destroyers baiting away the blockade. It was a plan to land a long shot into the island. Launching an arrow into the air, it transformed into a Type-52 Zero, acting as an improvised recon and spotter plane. It dived into the billowy smoke of the ongoing chaos, helping mark out targets for the artillery shelling and soon after, the dive bombing.
If all would go well, then there's gonna be another smoking crater to draw away attention to.
cfb464 No.2925
The Zero sweeps above the carnage, trying to avoid being spotted.
Down there, an Abyss To-class Light Cruiser smashes through wall after wall of a wooden house, trying to snatch at what may be escaping humans and fairies hiding under fragile cover. Another To-class forgets its purpose and in excitement and rage, sees a human attempting to escape. The Abyss creature, leaps forth, its three gigantic bestial jaws tearing through their own picks of the body. Meanwhile some of the other Abyss, starved for human flesh, and for the smarter ones, choice harvests, doubled back through houses after their numbers were stretched thin across the town.
cfb464 No.2926
>>2925A Wa-class transport lingers, still starved for cargo. It waits impatiently, impotent to give chase and heave humans into its waiting cold womb, and could only watch the rest of its kind do the hunting for her. The pickings are sparse, coming in trickles, the belly hungrily lapping up every handful of living beings caught.
>>2787>Rolled 68, 55, 77, 99, 87, 49, 63 = 498The fighter , despite being small, got spotted a few moments in, and quickly escaped out of the hot zone, dodging anti-aircraft fire by weaving around the buildings the best it could. Making its way out of the island, it spots Kaga waiting out at sea, her flight deck raised to accommodate the damaged Zero that got barely got away.
"Loading shells, set heading, compensate for wind." Nagara goes through the sequence, as doing a land-based shelling was a rare thing to carry out. After all, this emergency situation, with help pinned down.
"We're ready," the light cruiser says. "Shelling will begin once we get the planes off."
With that, you notch arrows one after the other, turning into fighters equipped with a variety of 200 and 50-pound bombs. Carefully, the formation of dive bombers passes over the open spot where your team of destroyers managed to lure away the Abyss destroyers. This managed to minimize the anti-aircraft fire…
cfb464 No.2927
>>2926In the furthermost rear of the flight, another Zero acts to report the shelling and bombing.
Nagara's shells come down on the Abyss hunting about on land, coming down on a wide area indicated by the spotter. The blasts, manage to catch some of the unaware Abyss, reducing several to flaming metal wrecks.
The dive bombers, seeing the shells impact, sweep in to make their runs amid the bellows of AA fire. Several take hits to the wings, but the bombs come down from the sky anyway. The blasts send some of the beasts flying, others wrecked by the explosive power. However, a Wa-class in the area eats up several hits, slowly being cracked and dismantled by the bombs. However, too many of the bombs hit, and the fattened, beaten Wa-class explodes messily, contents and all, a messy, smoking mess reeking of charred salty meats and burning metals.
There was nothing left in that patch of the island, as the explosions died down.

A plane doubles back and comes in low for another pass. At a closer look, the site of the bombing is distressing. Among the burnt-out wooden husks of houses and warped metal hulls of Abyss creatures, not a thing stirred. From the corner of the eye, something caught attention.
It was a hand, or rather, parts of a hand. Around it, poking out of the ash and rubble were body parts. Buried was a vague human shape twisted and broken, and missing certain things.

You didn't want to open your mouth on this, but that heavy feeling inside makes you want to jump and run. In the end, you're really responsible, and word might come out on this sooner or later. Obligated to tell it, you look at Nagara in the eye.
"I didn't…cause this, did I?" Nagara asks. "No, you didn't do this, but, this was a bad turn of events", you say. You repeat the overhead report to her, but in broad strokes. It wasn't quite so, according to the reports on the shelling. The bombing run however, was messier.
How this turned out, there's only the other conclusion. Those 200-pound bombs hit so hard, maybe too hard, but there were so many Abyss ships on the ground there…
There's no turning back from this, not when there's other people caught as hostages by the Abyssal transports, nor that there's people still hiding and on the run, waiting for a ship to escape the island from.
"Get ahold of yourself," you tell Nagara, but it's really you that should get ahold of, being responsible for this…
"Y-yeah…" she says, still shaken from a terrible, but ultimately avoidable mistake that the two of you got caught up in.

The two of you race up to the approach sounds of cannon fire by allies. Nagara moves up ahead to take point, the two 15 cm turrets on her rigging swinging to the sides, and her handheld with the third set of 15cm cannons. Up in the air go another a pair of Zeroes and a pair of Suisei torpedo bombers to protect yourself at range.
As you two move up, unfortunate Abyss stragglers, looking for easy munchies get blown away by Nagara laying in some shells downrange.
Moments later do you regroup with Chitose, Maikaze, Akebono and Ushio, who, bunched up back-to-back for a good while now, skate to your sides and form a diamond formation with you and Chitose at the center.
Groupings for irregular, quick attacks are one thing, but a grouping for firepower and making a stand are another matter.
"It's great you've finally caught up," Chitose sighs, relieved, re-attaching seaplane bomber to a rack. She certainly looks a little worn from being surrounded and chased.
"Hell, I thought we're gonna run out of planes," Akebono snarls, eyeing your pristine flight deck and your mostly-full quiver of arrows. "This is some shit, I'm past halfway through all my shells!"
"That's what you get for going wild," Maikaze says. "Still, we're a full fleet again!" and quickly, she snaps around and fires off a dose of 12.5 cm aspirin. "This our chance! They've turned their attention from hunting people back to us!"

dfe02e No.2991
You turn away from the smouldering mess of the main beach, stained like charcoal. Wood splinters float everywhere, with remains of ships, and burned-down, if not wrecked huts. Meanwhile, your defensive formation lays down fire in its wake, shredding a couple destroyers and the occassional Abyssal light cruiser shepherding them,
You direct one of your planes to scout out ahead in the direction you point to.
There is a second beach at the other side of the island. It's a narrow strip of sand that breaks immediately into high overhanging cliffs, dotted with moss. Underneath, through a rocky path, you see an improvised dock, with a floating walkway held up by improvised rubber tires. You swear you see something rustling in the foliage…

…and it's something. No, a someone, and not too far behind, just might be other people, peeking. For a while, the fighting comes to a lull, with Abyss creatures now scattered and disoriented… temporarily. They won't be here, not just yet, unless someone makes a ruckus.
Akebono sighs, with the faint waft of naval cannons cooling their barrels. She furrows her brows as she tries to make out what you're seeing too. "Shit, is this the ONLY way out of the island now?" Akebono spits. "Are you expecting us to drop all our gear and piggyback people to dry land?"
It's a bunch of them hiding and waiting for help. But with all the hostiles waiting to chomp on humans, farm them, blow them away, or incinerate them….
"Can't we do something?" Maikaze asks, a little twitchy, eager to do anything. You try to think quickly, but the sight of another plane, not yours, coming from a different heading, is about to soar overhead…

"That's definitely it, they've managed to break through," Chitose adds. "That recon plane, Shiun, that was assigned to Kiso this morning…" .
There was some forethought to this, with the fleet's numbers being stretched around. This morning, Chitose was assigned to carry a full complement of Zuiun seaplanes instead of a mixed armament. Since Chitose still had a cannon and AA guns on her rigging by default, it wouldn't be too bad, unlike being stripped entirely of rigging just for plane racks. Chitose was brought back to to the moment, with Akebono rambling in her rough ways – it was very unlike the way she presents herself with the rest of the ships in her class.
"Must be swallowing her pride again. "
Maikaze perks up, "But that also means…Ashigara and Isuzu!"

She musters up the courage to answer. "I-I guess it's okay. I can do it… I can help these people!"
"…on the GROUND!" Akebono furiously waves her arms. "Don't you get it? We're gonna have to carry all our cannons! It's easier to carry it all on WATER."
You butt in. "It's certainly true that our rigging will drag us down on land. If that is that case, you two will have to eject your rigging and use only as many cannons as you can carry on your arms.
Akebono glares. "Fair enough. It's not like torpedoes are good outside water."
This should buy time, you think. With planes overhead, they should'nt be cornered, and with Ashigara and co. on the way, we're covered.

>>3004While the four of you - Chitose, Maikaze and Nagara spread out to stand guard, the two destroyers move up to the shore, and eject their rigging on the beach. With their burden lessened, they no longer sink as far into the sand. It takes a while for them to work their way up the rocks. If they were to ever touch the rickety wooden planks serving as a makeshift dock, they would've fallen through to the water, and that's two people less with cannons.
Overhead, your planes buzz about, loosely passing the area, avoiding a circle that would give away the position of your team.
The two destroyers, without their rigging, disappear into the foliage and try to reassure the people hiding that help is near. It works out, with the two destroyers sneaking in with a couple people to track down and help anyone left escaping.

>>This will do.Minutes later in the woods, Ushio and Akebono sneak around, trying to retrace the steps of the humans. At a certain point in the woods, according to a middle-aged man who got away, their group got separated while running away from certain human-shaped Abyss creatures.
In the distance, the two spot a foraging To-class light cruiser, its huge body constantly struggling against foliage, much of which is torn away and caught in its body. There is a pair, a He-class and a Ho-class light cruiser, both stumbling about, rely on arms to pull around.
Ushio and Akebono swing around, and in the distance, a slowly-fattening Wa-class transport is sitting on its oversized butt, its heavy bottom making little, subtle hops, but unable to be as fast as its other brethren on land.
This was their chance. The two unload on the light cruisers, sitting ducks as they were.
At the same time, their civilian guides, or rather the surviving pair of humans jump for cover.
The firepower in such a close and confined range, left a shockwave, kicking up dirt and wood everywhere. Stuck, the three Abyss creatures were blown to bits of pale meat and metal. However, one of the second volleys sails high into the air.
The Wa-class, stuck in a ditch, tries to fire back with anti-air cannons, but misses due to being unfamiliar with ground combat. The two destroyers hide behind the newly-deformed terrain. Nearby, one of the humans starts trying to crawl for cover next to them.
Frantiaclly, within earshot's reach, the middle-aged man shouts to Ushio, "That's the one, they've taken my family!" he says. The fattened Wa-class has swallowed in those humans. If only there was a way to get rid of the AA fire and get them out….

There was nothing left. Or maybe, with a magnifying glass.
The middle-aged man, peeking up from cover, witnesses the aftermath of the explosion. A clearing bare earth , wood splinters and char was in front of him. He looks around, desperately calling for his loved ones, and nothing answers. He tries to dig through with his bare hands, trying to find something, but it was for nothing.
By his knees he sees a human body part, and it dawns on him.

Right now, there are still Wa-class transports on the island. From a view above the island, the planes can see some transports are lurching along, still trying to suck up more humans and fairies into their cold, wet, cavernous belly holds. Some of the utterly fattened Wa-classes, their bellies full and swelling with life, freshly picked, have slowed down. Some Abyssal light cruisers have started to tie chains to a transport to tow them to the shore. It won't be long before the Abyss could pile all the Wa-class together and shove them into the water.
Right now, Akebono and Ushio are stuck on the ground, covering some human escapees. They could either get pick up their rigging all the way down on the beach and back into the water, or they could take the long route on land and try to find and cover more escapees.
Alternatively, you, Chitose and Nagara could try to hit the Abyss gathered on the main beach, or try to disrupt efforts to tow the transports on land. With everyone together, you could have artillery fire spotted and directed, but at risk of massed AA fire.

In time, those woods would catch fire as well. Escapees, with help of the two girls, come to the escape point by trickles.

"Looks like sister's still alright!" Isuzu brightens up at the sight of Nagara.
Meanwhile, Kiso reaches out to retrieve the seaplane earlier and attaches it to her rigging again. "Let's not talk about seaplanes right now," she says to Nagara and Maikaze, who hold back.
Ashigara looks to acknowledge you, and then notices swathes of the island on fire, pillowy pillars of smoke reaching into the sky. "Looks like we're in the middle of battle. Right now, they're not just burning down the villages, but they're also trying to capture humans. There's a several Wa-class transports on the island and beach. Some are being protected and towed by the lighter ships. Still a lot of resistance, too few of us, and a lot of humans and fairies missing."
Ashigara nods.
"We're doing what we can to slow down the transports until we can seize and remove the captives inside," you clarify. "We also sent two destroyers onto land to find anyone who's escaped, and to open up the transports."
"By themselves?"
"We've planes and shelling as a distraction…hopefully…"
You then explain the transports on the way to the beach, as well as the nearby escape point by a narrow cliff and strip of sand, where Akebono and Ushio dropped their rigging.
"…we can do this. All of us here can buy time. If we can't defeat all the Abyss here somehow, we can fight long enough to get all the people to safety," Ashigara says. "Not the best kind of fight, but it will do, for today."

Ashigara seems to be satisfied with your explanation of the situation. For now, you've managed to dodge the bullet where someone might speak up about having blown up civilians, while trying to crack open the transports.
Unlike you, you can tell she has something else on her mind, and hopefully, it's got nothing to do with doubting your grasp of the situation. The fleet, still outnumbered by the Abyss on the island, and with some of them still in the water, freeing all the captives inside the wet caverns of the Wa-class transports is going to be a challenge.

Kiso looks out to shore with her one other good eye. From here, the dark specks of Abyss ships teeming on the beach become much like ants swarming over a stash of food.
"Look at that, they're up to something no good," she says.
"By now they know how many of us are there and their leaders have an idea on how to deal with us," you say. "They're getting wise to spread smoke everywhere."
"So you think they probably know what we're here for?" Ashigara asks.
"Yes, the captives" you say.
"And that's what they're going to use to stop us from making any moves. They want us to hold back, try to use more time trying to carefully get the captives out, or have us back off. It's quite a dirty move."
"Dragging us down in a dirty fight, that's not really our way, is it? This isn't their challenge to fight us on the ground?" Kiso asks.
"If we did, getting that close is to let them have all their numbers at us," Ashigara points out. "Getting us on the ground might be a way for them to win."
You consider those moves the Abyss is trying to take. It seems that whatever we do from this point has a lot of risk, but we can't allow them to walk away with being able to make more Abyss for future raids. With neighboring islands having similar attacks today, then tomorrow's overwhelming numbers would be far worse.

Upon hearing this, Maikaze's eyes go wide at something far away, briefly. "Shell the beach…? This is like… shooting someone in the back, trying to get away…but these people haven't done anything wrong…"
For a moment, Maikaze stares into Kaga's back, then to the torpedoes at her side, and back to Kaga again.

Cutting across the beach would risk hitting it." you say, but you almost had another word that would've slipped, in a bad way.
Ashigara furrows at this, but she turns around to give the order.
"Kiso!"
"Chitose!"
The two of you give commands to your separate detachments. The seaplanes launch off their racks again and enter a smoky sky overhead the beach.

>>3177Maikaze turns away, reluctant to shell like this, but she forms up with the rest.
On an eeriely calm sea, with destroyers and light cruisers in a row, the shelling commences, with a variety of cannon types roaring and billowing their firepower as as distraction.
Soon enough, do 50-pound bombs fall upon the length of the beach, scattering land-based Abyssals, springing them immediately into AA fire, with help of the handfuls-but-still-many Abyssal destroyers and light cruisers hanging in the water.
You look into the distance, the smoke of fires mixing with the smoke of artillery impacts all along the beach. "This is giving good results. We can get the position of the lone transports now," you say. "We can start freeing captives this way."
Meanwhile, explosions and smoke erupt from distant parts of the island, affirming the situation.
"This should help their chances of success," you say, under your breath.
Moments later, do the Abyss rally a counter-attack after spotting all of you. A game of chicken follows, buying time, and picking off anything trying to get close. Behind you, do the rescue ships swing around, closer into range.
A couple close calls and a few good holes in their numbers later on turns up. Soon, you see in the cliffs, Akebono and Ushio, smoked and ragged, with trails and trails of escaped fairies and humans. Retrieving their rigging on the beach and reporting back, they've sustained quite a beating, compared to their intact seagoing equipment.
Akebono approaches silently, but the air is heavy and cold around her. You can only hope she doesn't get into shouting down what's happened earlier.
"Good job on the rescue. You should take it easy in the back. We need all the help we can get here," you say to them.

LAST TIME:
Ideally, you'd picture this going buttery smoooth, in your head:
The two fleets regroup - Ashigara and Kaga – you. Convoys of human and fairy hostages – tucked inside swelling bellies of Wa-class transports — are thrown into disarray, and lose precious time. Your combined fleet of nine ships so far begins to close in, and put the pinch on the massive Abyss numbers stuck on the beach.
It's not, not right now.
There's more on your plate. The shadow of a couple of fuck ups tugs at you as you try to cover it up in the mess of things. That one DD with a loose mouth – Akebono, is back. There's not really stopping her from opening her mouth, is it?
The intact condition of her rigging sticks out against what she walked out of a while ago.
You throw back your hair and try to tower over the DD, and as stiff and puffed-up as you would, you waved it off,
"Good job on the rescue. You should take it easy in the back. We need all the help we can get here."
The ragged Akebono just leers at you, baffled. From behind, you can feel Ashigara eyeing you and the DD. Behind your calm face, things become a blur.
The fear of disappointment from someone like Ashigara puts the pinch on you.
Not good. You ____, "Whatever happened back there may be pretty bad, but don't talk about it right here."
She doesn't budge, gaping at what you just said. She's about to throw down in the middle of all this, and if everyone else gets to hear it, this whole operation would go worse. There's probably something you could do to put her in her place.
[ ] Shout her down, get to her first in a shouting match

Ashigara's eyes are all on this,as the combined fleet slides into cover, behind a tall corner of the island. The heat of the fires and smoke spreads further outward, the choking feeling almost here.
There's no time right now for this whining, but you know you've had it coming.
"What do you want? Things got on my head, it was bad, it can't be helped? We did the best we could, but I fucked up, it can't be helped anymore," you say.
Chitose looks on, worried, but turns her back on this.
Akebono is just livid and red at this. "Of course you fucked up, I was on the ground to see it. Ushio, me… we could have done it ourselves, get them out, save them, but you went and had to drop those bombs! You didn't just drop bombs right on top of me, but…but Ushio… she was gonna get blown up too!"
Ushio this, Ushio that, she's getting into rambling about Ushio. Why does she have to go and stick up for her right here?
You narrow your eyes at this. _ is slipping, _____ at the edges of your thought, what were you forgetting?
"That may be true, but it can all wait until the operation is finished. Are we clear?"
It doesn't seem to get through, until Ushio pulls on Akebono. She's a wallflower, certainly, but she's one that can sway Akebono.
Ushio pleads, "Come on, that's enough now. Things are bad they way they are right now." Akebono doesn't pause, and on edge she shakes off Ushio, at when Maikaze and Chitose, find themselves grabbing onto Akebono, holding her back until she's gone off edge, panting it all away.
"Good, that's done," you murmur. But Ashigara is still next to you, her eyes just burning in.
"Kaga" she calls.
Her teeth clench, gleaming sharp, "You said everything was alright. I thought we were getting around to winning here?" she asks. "Now they say you tried to rescue people by shelling them from across the island, and you blew them up?"
You shrug it, "We'll save this for later."
"Is this what you're going to do? Doing something else, making a mess while we try to win the day? Saving people by killing them together with the enemy, in one blow?" she growls.
At this time does your gaze try to escape her burning look of disappointment and outrage, eyes onto smaller barges sneaking along to shore…
They haven't seen you like this, and now it's become the worst time to see the un-formal Kaga under a different, unpleasant kind of pressure.
[ ] Alright, we won't send planes ahead of everyone. We'll do it the way we should and press forward. There's still people to rescue.

We need to keep the abyss transports on land at all costs. Load up the people that we've saved so far onto the fewest number of our transports and and have the two damaged tin cans escort them to safety.
Available planes should harass the abyss so they can't move their transports while the ships move up, clearing out the abyss on sea and blockading the main port. Empty transports stick close to the rest of the warships.

Ashigara was slapped with disappointment, after you did something that can't be taken back, and much worse, was something that could've been avoided at all.
It would be wonderful right now to crawl under a table and bury under a pillow, waiting for this to blow over, to cool down, and take the matter as more formally, like filling out papers, or something behind closed doors.
But no, this is the open ocean. The seas rock with battle, and the heat and smoke of the burning island radiates and chokes any sign of relief.
Now, it all hinges on the kind of answer you give them, after your screwup. On top of that, in front of everyone, did she shout you down as you tried dodging the captive issue, on top of dropping bombs on top of your own allies.
Amidst these burning glares, you stood there taking in disappointment from people who held you with more respect than the rest. After all, YOU are Kaga, among the first and foremost of the carriers.
"Alright, we'll break the back of the Abyss while they make the escape," you say. This would spiral into a straight-up brawl, for certain, but it would create a chaos big enough for boats to
escape. The only thing that might shake this up are Abyssal support fleets, but they might be instinctually be driven to the fight, much less an intelligent maneuver to hit the boats… right?
Kiso grins at the chance she's gotten. Less reacting, and more brawling. Nothing like making a push to turn the tables after poking around and making do with defending…slowly.
Line versus line, blockade versus blockade.

You look over to Akebono and Ushio, the former looking like she's not done with as her eyes tell something else as you give the order.
"You two aren't in any shape to fight over there. Just because the rigging is still alright, doesn't mean much. It might be the next thing to explode. So, I'll have the two of you go over to the escape ships and escort them. "
Ushio looks relieved to not have to wade through the upcoming slugfest. She takes Akebono by the lead, saluting, "Ushio, Akebono, commencing evacuation escort!"
Their backpacks climb to a roar, and the two turn around, skating to the direction of the escape barges. Their wake throws more and more water behind, splashing a white trail, fading further behind them.
"I hope they can stay safe this time," Chitose says. "To think we asked them of all things to fight on the ground. It's something tanks should've been doing, right?"
"It can't be helped right now," Kiso says. "Whatever the case, it looks like we're all that we've got right now…"
"…so we'll do right by everyone on the island this time," Ashigara continues.
You hide your smile. "Hearing that makes me feel like the sea's calmer," you say. Of course, what you really meant to say was to thank them, in spite of you screwing up. In the back of your head, maybe you'll get what you deserve later, but there's more important things right now.

On the other hand, Maikaze's usual self doesn't seem to be quite there. With the way she looks at you and avoids looking directly, you can feel a dark cloud over her head, something cold, perhaps.
"I won't miss, or overdo it this time," you tell her, also within earshot of Nagara and Isuzu. Maikaze nods silently, and then puts on her usual face. With a chirp she goes, "We're ready to dance with them, but can they keep up with us on the beach?"
All together, the backpack riggings whirr again as all seven of you head towards the island. Kiso and Isuzu form up in the front row, while you – Kaga, and Chitose form up in the center. Ashigara, Maikaze, and Nagara form up to your sides and the rear. You launch your planes overhead.
Kiso and Chitose's seaplanes launch off their rails and head over to the beach , ready for the initial shelling. An assorted array of cannons from your ships billow and belch shells onto the island, opening up for your wing of Suisei to swoop in for their bombing run. Several eat up the salvos of AA fire from scattered Abyssals In disarray, they merely react to anything incoming as the other, higher forms scramble to get their numbers back together.
".. and that's how we bring the fight to the enemy!" Kiso howls in excitement, as she yanks back her hat to see more clearly.
Some of them hurry back into the water as fast as their heavy bodies could. Some of the air-dropped bombs manage to take out a few of those escaping to sea, and a handful more stuck on the ground.
Meanwhile, a transport is being dragged across the sand in the chaos, as the waters splash with several more Abyssals swimming in at high speed to seek you out.
There is a report of a more advanced, higher commanding Abyss that has appeared with a small escort. This might become a problem, you think.

Planes:
Keep an eye on the enemy transports. So long as they aren't being pulled to the sea, don't worry too much about them. Have the planes harass any abyss units whenever they try to organize themselves to pull the transports back into the sea, but don't put the planes in unnecessary danger, we have a limited supply. Also, call in any concentrated clumps of abyss that are not near a transport.
Ships:
We're organized, and not too heavily damaged. It's time for shock and awe. Throw the enemy into disarray while clearing a path for the shore. Destroying enemies takes priority for now, however, as soon as it looks like the abyss are going to block the shore or the transports are in danger of reaching the sea, break through and trap as many of the abyss on the shore as possible. Lastly, respond to fire missions whenever the planes request it.

Meanwhile, few of your planes have made it back, some slightly tattered – any more would've erupted them into fireballs like the others. You raise up your arm to retrieve them, as they make a landing approach on the flight deck on your arm. Several fairies pop out, stowing away the planes as they come in one by one.
Chitose on the other hand, holds steady as the seaplanes try to make for the loading cranes on her back, as the fairies riding her rigging do the fine work of loading intact planes onto the launch rails again.

Beyond the reaches of the Abyss' harvest gathering, the elites attempt to rally back, battered but still battle-worthy. They form up, with a distant Wa transport slithering behind their protection. As planes overhead start eating AA fire, their forms are sighted: A Ta-class battleship, flanked by a Ri-class heavy cruiser and a Nu-class light aircraft carrier. In the waters, emerge handfuls of Ni-class Destroyers – the somewhat more advanced forms of the simple-minded, hungry Abyss I and Ro-class destroyers that you've taken down in droves. Still driven by instinct, they still are dangerous, with heavier weapons on them.
The waters begin to splash violently with more Abyss meeting you to take back what they've come for.

"I've overheard reports of these things," you say. "That there's these birth cries happening, and horrible stuff starts coming out."
Kiso turns to you. "That's happening NOW?" In surprise, it's like her eyepatch would just fall off.

The evacuation is underway, but with meager protection up close as your fleets sailed out to put distance, and buy time against the regrouped Abysses.
Ever slowly do you see the sun threaten to retreat beyond the horizon, as the cacophony of groans and fury mix with the shrill wails of the bestial Abysses. Still, you could hear the desperate echoes of human and fairy slowly melding into the tide of darkness. A captivating procession of the dead sweeps the island, as a chorus swells and ebbs, offending the ears with its beat, and freezing the feet of others in terror. Beneath the surface of the water, advances a wriggling carpet of black, with wispy trails of beady shining eyes, opening a way for their elites to stop your meddling.
The icy pale ladies of the Abyss ride forth, persisting in their ominous purpose.
Maikaze, at the front, speeds up. "We have to make it!" she says, as she holds tight to her twin cannon turret, fixated on the distant objective – the handful of stuck Wa-classes, left behind. Though damaged, your planes tell you that they're not wrecked like the last two times. It's a hopeful thought to try and pry them all open, and get the people out. But right now, for your fleet to reach out onto the beach is like an eager hand at a bird's nest while there's a waiting snake, curled around.

>anti-air sweep
Their next move, you guess, after trying to put us in a dilemma, is to reclaim their prize. With a Light Carrier present, they could sneak in a bombing run or a low-angled torpedo run.
Isuzu and Nagara were refitted with 15.5cm triple gun mounts, but these were mounted on a rifle-shaped, handheld cannon as opposed to directly on their rigging. The rest of their rigging was left with additional cannons, but half were still left with purely anti-air guns.
You could leave it to them, you think.
"Alright, they've probably sent in planes to hit the escape ships. Isuzu, Nagara, start clearing the skies!" you shout.
The two Light Cruisers got to work, and banked away from the formation. With their rifle-style mounts pointed, they started sweeping the areas side to side, and above as well. In moments, they immediately braced for the recoil and spewed out a torrent of shells. The bestial Abyssal planes, with their cruel beaks, were just about to angle in for their attack run, but the AA fire snagged them, causing them to erupt into fireballs. As their metal remains fell into the water, things seemed to be calm.
"Keep an eye out," you signal to them.
Good going so far. A little more and we could pull bank.
"Our turn!" Ashigara flares with eagerness. She raises her finger, with Kiso and Maikaze taking off for real. The two veer to the side and pepper the schools of Destroyers, scattering them, and leaving them blindsided with Ashigara's shots.
With holes poked in their swarm, do you send in a bombing run on top of the Abyssal leaders. Some of the bombers tumble in flames wading through Abyssal AA fire, with scant direct hits and many near-hits. Though knocked off their momentum and strong footing, the Abyssals shell back in the distance…

>>3466"Shift our heading on my mark…." you order.
While the Abyssal numbers are caught reacting to your assault, you, Chitose and Ashigara begin to change directions at particular intervals, some shorter, some longer. Kiso and Maikaze have no trouble with this, skating about the water's surface much faster than you two. Your riggings roar and coo as your speeds rise and sink.
By making course and velocity changes at hidden, seemingly irregular intervals, compensating for the aim becomes a longer task with more shots missing.
The duo ahead swing about, making chaos, laying rounds and breaking apart clustered ships, while you two get put on the defensive as the Abyssal battleship and heavy cruiser fire off their rounds.
The Abyss cannons billow, the shells splitting the air. Throwing off their aim has managed to make the blasts pass you by. As the blasts shake the water, waves swell, and a couple shots slam by Chitose's side, wrecking much of her plane launch racks. Some of her rigging has taken a blow.
She tries to recover, trying to skate across the crests of the waves back to a level footing. You reach with your free hand and pull her back in.
That battleship, if this keeps on, will probably get a good bead us, you think, and yet, retreating with their guns trained at us will end up in a tight chase endangering the rescue…

>>3475>Let's line up our shots again. Hope they'll break off.The Abyss ladies and their carrier keep up with your own footsies, with theirs, jockeying and trading for shots, with near-hits and misses all the while.
Your flight deck on your arm remains strong, though bits of its defenses and plank have been battered and charred in this exchange. The deck remains flight-worthy overall, in spite of this.
You hold Chitose up until she stands up again on her own. "Nothing will be gained if we don't keep trying. This can't end with everyone downed," you say. "Even pushed back like this, we can still stop them while the others get far away enough from here."
"What are you thinking?" Ashigara says, moving up in front of you two as cover, firing into the distance, some shots incidentally beating down some Abyssal light cruisers acting as shepherds. A couple of her shots manage to land home on the the Abyssal carrier, but it's still not enough to stop the flow of planes.
"Let's line up our shots again. A couple more good shots should stop them at least," you say.
From here, you pull back to Kiso until in range. With a signal, another recon plane goes up, and with your breath held, it tries to weather the defense patches as everyone else tries to prevent, and distract the Abyss ships from laying down AA fire on it. A few tense moments later, the spotting pays off. You immediately send up your remaining stash of planes – bombers, followed by torpedoes, with Chitose's own flight close by.
Ashigara's cannons roar and howl, biting into the enemy again. With a thundering crash, the Abyssal light carrier is knocked out of launching planes, and a bombing pass blows it to splattered chunks.
The pale-haired lady leading it all, their Abyssal battleship, and her other escort, weather through the bombing, persistent.
Not good, you think. With another pass, with Chitose's help, you strike another blow, beating away at their defenses. Your B7A Ryuuseis hurry down the water's surface, but only some torpedoes make it – some strike other targets in the way, but the ones that make it through, utterly smash, but not decidedly defeat the battleship.

>>Blow them apart.
Another try, another pass. Putting your all into it, you force in bombs onto your other planes. Fairies working your flight deck take in the planes below deck and bolt in bombs to plane bellies. While you buy precious seconds in, the others move up to take the heat off you.
Type-52's mounted with 50-pounder bombs later rise out of the elevators move into position and fly off the deck instead of your bow. A slower launch, but it helps to scrape together the remaining airpower you have.
You notch a couple more arrows and let fly, sending planes with pre-loaded ordinance. Chitose turns over to her remaining, intact side and likewise makes do with those launch rails, sending in the last few.
Any more scrape-togethers and that would be the end, with only air-to-air coverage left. You couldn't possibly leave it up to Kiso's scarce supply of purely-for-recon planes, could you? [1/2]

Meanwhile, from the rear of the formation, you had the opportunity to see how you've held up the escape so far. From here, you could see the shrinking figures of the ferries, while the smaller boats are towed in the wake.
Out there, the shells bear down again on the cluster of Abysses, as the pale-haired Ta-class battleship girl tries to skate in and out of artillery fire trying to nail her down.
Your planes jink, dive, and weave in, out, and about the gnashing mad hordes, far and across, toward the target. In the charge do you see crashes and fireballs left behind while the remaining break through.
The Ri-class heavy cruiser was swallowed by Ashigara's firepower, barely hanging on as a charred figure.
With aerial bombs and a low-flying torpedo strike, the Abyss leadership is ruined. The pale lady is reduced to nearly nothing, artillery rigging blown apart and unable to physically pursue. She tries to pull back as she cries for the black swarms to converge on her.
This is it, you thought.
"No, you're not getting away!" Kiso shouts as her torpedo tubes spit out in sequence, snaking towards the weakened Abyss. Several explosions pillar out of the sea, as some Destroyers get hit instead.
Whether or not a torpedo finished off their leader was uncertain, save for a distant plume where she used to be.
"Everyone turn around. Commence orderly retreat!" you cry. Kiso and Maikaze turn back at full speed, relieved. The five of you floor it, your rigging, chugging and racing.
"Shouldn't have overdone it, Kiso," you tell her. "But, that's a good job anyway. Load up torpedoes, you'll fire yours last since you went ahead."
In a staggered vector do you cover your trail with torpedoes fired behind you. Every course change at an angle was covered with a discharge of those Type-93's, until you felt satisfied with having put enough distance.

The sun's descent begins to slowly wash the sky in new hues.
Coming out of this disaster alive was a relief, but everybody, still on their guard came out beat up like hell. The island was a black, crisped lump sticking out of the sea.
Akebono and Ushio, who came in first to guard the escape all this time, were glad to have linked up with their other fellow destoyers Sazanami and Oboro. The other two managed to come back intact from another distant blockade trying to force Abyss ships to shore.
From all the way out here on sea, the skies of the island were stained with dark hues, foul and fierce. Pained cries of those captives still on the beach haunted you, though faint they became more and more. You look again toward the island, realizing Maikaze did too.
You thought you heard a chorus of shrill cries, of things being born. You reassure the confused Maikaze. "Don't worry about that, you're just tired. You danced non-stop, isn't that right?"
"…I kind of did, yeah" as she tried to buy into your excuse. "Dwelling on it will push you too far," you say.
The cries were a fading reminder of what you're coming back for.
Even if this may have been the worst day, you couldn't let it happen again and again. Ahead, watching those ferries packed with people was some small victory at least. There was some hope of reclaiming the sea, turning it away from the black, metal tide, to a peaceful one just may be in reach.
====
In the corner of the ferry, a few islanders huddle around an old lady, keeping her safe. She strokes a dried, ornamented skull, whispering to it. A chorus of faint, maddened whispers waft about, heard by those faithful.
"We will brave the long wait. Never forgive, never forgive…"
END?

And that's the end of Kantai Collection Quest: The Worst Day.
You guys did a good job, having avoided one or two disasters toward the end with a good call boosted by a good roll. Kaga avoided another bout or two of SUFFERING, so all's good.
Though the day isn't totally saved, our local girl didn't quite ruin everything either!
