b64d45 No.293

In a world fairly similar to our own, it is the middle of a century not unlike our 20th. Great kingdoms rose and fell in Ourazia, ignorant for many years about the fertile continent that lay across the Athiopic Ocean to their west. Exploration, when it came, came late, and as the great powers of Ourazia sent their colonists across the ocean to this undiscovered country, which they named the Neuwelt, they were blissfully unaware of the shadow of war on the horizon.

Ten years after the first small settlements in the Neuwelt, the Last War broke out. As the Carolinum bombs fell across Ourazia, travel and wireless contact across the Athiopic Ocean was rendered impossible. Now, ten years after the end of the War, the Carolinum fog has lifted and the suriving empires of Ourazia attempt to restart their abortive colonisation attempt using the skills and technology developed during the War. Dozens of groups of Armoured Pioneers steam across the Athiopic, armed with advanced landships to protect them from the dangers of the vast and foreboding Neuwelt. You are the leader of one of these groups of Pioneers, tasked with directing, controlling and governing one of these small independent armoured columns.

Where do you hail from?

[THE BHARATTAN RAJ]: After the flight from Dying Albion, the greatest monarchy in Ourazia settled in its massive Bharattan colony, where a rich, aristocratic upper class attempts to uplift a vast native underclass which never wanted to be ruled. Though the Rajans preserve some of the military and technological power of their former years, years of suppressing native uprisings have made them cautious and pessimistic about the future.
> +1 MIGHT, +1 RESEARCH, -1 MORALE, -1 MOBILITY

[THE FRANQO-GOTHIC COMMUNE]: Bitter enemies during the Last War, Franqia and the Gothreich were forged into an erstwhile superstate by a massive Communard worker's revolt. Though their home territories have been ravaged by war and their government is somewhat unstable, they are undoubtedly the leading industrial and ideological power on the planet.
> +1 MORALE, +1 SUPPORT, -1 MIGHT, -1 TRAINING

[THE QIIFRIKI EMPIRE]: Escaping the War largely unscathed, the disparate peoples of Qin and Ifrike voluntarily united under Qinese rule in the face of Albionnese expansion. Though their kingdom is one wrought from necessity and is, in many respects, totally backwards, their strong work ethic and passion for independence make them a force to be reckoned with.
> +1 TRAINING, +1 MOBILITY, -1 RESEARCH, -1 SUPPORT

[THE NEUWELT REMNANT]: When the Neuwelt was cut off, it didn't take long for most of the settlers there to go native, integrating into the tribal states of the continent. Now, as Pioneer ships appear on the horizon, some dig their outdated landships out of storage in an attempt to expand and protect their territory.

You are the leader of one of the Raj's many Armoured Pioneer groups, adding new territory to the Bharattan Raj for Rajah and Country. It is your sacred duty to bring civilization, education and the firm hand of Imperial government to the backwards savages of the Neuwelt. How did you gain this leadership position?

[MERCANTILE]: You are a representative of the Central Bharattan Trading Company, with all the economic clout that entails. You've set off to the Neuwelt to make your fortune expanding into new and untapped markets.
>+1 SUPPORT, Start with 1 extra Light Landship

[POLITICAL]: You were elected to the Bharattan House of Lords on the promise that you would make your nation great again, and your constituents and fellow Colonial Party members have seen fit to reward you with suitable brute firepower for putting down uppity natives.
>+1 MIGHT, Start with Heavy instead of Medium Landship

[MILITARY]: You've seen first-hand what an improperly-pacified indigenous population can do to a colonization effort. For the honour of His Majesty's Second Armoured Pioneer Regiment, you will bear down on the Neuwelt with all the strategic acumen at your disposal.
>+1 TRAINING, Start with Medium instead of Light Landship

[SCIENTIFIC]: The Imperial Society for the Advancement of the Sciences seeks to unlock the untapped natural-philosophical potential of the Neuwelt, and they've selected you to lead the first scientific expedition. Knowing your path is fraught with danger, they've seen fit to equip you with certain useful prototypes.
>+1 RESEARCH, Start with Rocket technology.

[POPULAR]: Elected to the House of Commons on a vast groundswell of popular support, your dangerously radical policies made you plenty of enemies in the Rajan nobility. You and your followers have decided to play it safe and make a fresh, forward-looking start in the Neuwelt.

You awake to the sound of rain over Fort Haligon. You can tell by the dim light seeping through the walls of your heavy canvas tent that it's still before reveille, and you steel yourself for another day of miserable weather. Haligon is a new settlement, built on the remnants of a small port the original Albionnese settlers abandoned during the War. You arrived three days ago, and it has been pouring ever since. Bloody Neuwelt.

>Head to the mess

Head to the mess hall. Can't fight a war on an empty stomach.

Throwing a jacket on over your pajamas, you step into the vestibule of your tent. Your batman, Private Jain, is nowhere to be found, though judging by the absence of the tea kettle and his boots he is likely out searching for water. No matter.

Steeling yourself against the chill damp, you splash your way across the darkened fort to the officer's mess tent, cheerfully lit from within. It is blessedly dry inside, the duckboard flooring cleaned and polished. The delicious smell of fried bacon and eggs fills the air- thanks to the recent arrival of your unit, Fort Haligon is well stocked with provisions. You gather a plate of breakfast and ponder where to sit. The tent is still quiet save for the muted bustling of the cooks in the kitchen and the mess orderlies.

There are three other people in the room- two young, sensibly-dressed women are conversing quietly in the corner. You normally wouldn't approve of women in the mess, but it seems Rear-Admiral Murray has unusually informal views. You believe these two might be a part of the civilian scientific team attached to your unit, many of whom you have yet to properly meet.

Reading an out-of-date paper in one of the scuffed armchairs near the mess woodstove is a young turban-clad Bharattan you recognize to be Risaldar Edward Horatio Singh, one of your Landship commanders. You haven't spoken to him much, but he came to your regiment highly recommended. He glances up at you and gives you a polite nod.

aquire bitches. that is, introduce yourself.

If these young ladies are indeed part of your scientific research group, you see no harm in making introductions. Pulling your jacket a little closer- really, you shouldn't be wearing pajamas for this, but you are a colonel and your rank does grant you some privileges- you stride over to their table with a polite smile on your face. They look up as you approach.

Both look to be in their early 30s, wearing the kind of practical working clothing that factory girls tend to favour. One, in an apparent nod at modesty, is wearing a long skirt over her Bharattan trousers. Her blonde hair is hidden by a cloche hat, and she looks at your pajamas with a faint air of disapproval. The other, who looks to have some Bharattan blood in her, wears a colourful shawl over her drab outfit. Her hair is cut almost but not quite scandalously short, and she regards you curiously from behind wire-framed spectacles with bright green eyes. Before you can introduce yourself, she cuts you off.

"You'd be the Colonel, then? Elizabeth Nakti Mayweather, Imperial Society. The dowdy old crone across the table is my dear friend Miz Prudence de Verre. Charmed, we're sure."

You hesitate, blindsided. de Verre seems to be caught in a similar state, half-furious and half-amused.

>"I beg your pardon, madam?"

>"Apologize at once!"
>Soldier on with your introduction.
