They say that the day the bombs fell down, the Others appeared in the sky. Huge, megalithic black disks, accompanied by a trumpeting heard around the world that made toxic air vibrate for a month straight, day and night.

They had been waiting.

The planet could no longer sustain the global pissing contest of the fast declining nations of the world. There wasn't even enough room for everybody anymore, and the last national space program had died decades before the self-inflicted cataclysm.

Earth burned under the ominous disks of the Others.

The history of this period is sparse and was never written down until much later. Eventually, men came out of the ground, bearded and fumbling at the sunlight as it shown through the multicolored clouds of a nuclear sky. Many worshipped the Others and formed various cults and sects dedicated to their image, though not one Other had come down from the disks to date.

When they finally did come down, it was after generations of the original survivors had come and gone. Settlements had sprouted up again in what used to be North America, but was now referred to as Oudland. A few communes came together and formed loose confederations of independent communities.

The Others were tall and thin, with smooth, unblemished dark grey skin that rippled and vibrated to make sounds, which was how they communicated. Their eyes were large milky white orbs that appeared to gaze at nothing and everything at once. They did not have mouths that our Earthly eyes could distinguish, and their hands were amorphous.

They looked around the settlements, took a few males, females, and children, then ascended to their black disks where they've remained for the past fifty years.

"What are you trying to prove, Kappa?"

You lift your head slowly to peer at Master Delvin, who has interrupted your solitude. He and the other monks at the enclave have raised you since you were very small.

Had the light not shone from behind where he stood in the doorway, his features would have been distinguishable. The yellow, sick skin. The lesions. Jaundiced eyes. Scabs.

The iron crosses tattood on their cheeks, unique to the Brotherhood of St. Barthalomew in that they were the last sect in the world to still cling to remnants of the Old Ways.

"You missed a very good reading. Revelations, my son."

>Get lost, Delvin. You know I can't stand the morning scriptures.

>I'm sorry, Master. It's just that I've been thinking lately. About what's beyond the enclave.

>I'm sorry, Master. I promise to come next time.

>Get out of my room!

"I'm sorry, Master. It's just that I've been thinking lately. About what's beyond the enclave."

Delvin steps into your room and you can see now that his face is very sad. He gazes at you for a moment and says, "Nothing but dust and blood, Kappa. And the Others."

He sits beside you on the bed, pulling his robes around his meager frame.

"Your place is here. The enclave will provide you with the tools to escape this wicked, broken world so that you may transcend it and be with God."

>That's not fair. I've lived here my entire life and have never questioned the Brotherhood. I want to know what lies beyond the temple.

>I cannot stay here forever, Delvin.

>Perhaps you are right. But I cannot help but wonder.

>Write-in

I don't think I'll ever understand the teachings of the Brotherhood, Master. How can I truly know the salvation it offers if I haven't experienced the suffering of the outside?

6aa768 No.7386

"I don't think I'll ever understand the teachings of the Brotherhood, Master. How can I truly know the salvation it offers if I haven't experienced the suffering of the outside?"

He nods, and looks out of the grime crusted window. He is silent for a long while.

"Nothing is fair in this life, Kappa. Nothing is fair. That must be your first lesson. The odds are always against you. Come with me."

Delvin stands and shuffles from the room. Before following him you grab your cloak. The temple is drafty, especially at night.

The two of you walk in silence down the damp, unlit corridors. The sounds of chants echo softly off the stone. The hallways ends abruptly, but Delvin reveals a trap door in the floor.

You descend the ladder first, and Delvin comes after. The hidden room is lit with many candles. Along one wall is a row of bookcases, absolutely filled. Another is dedicated to various weapons. He beckons to it.

"You have never fought before, Kappa. You must know how to fight if you truly want to survive outside of the Brotherhood's protection. Tell me which of these you would choose."

>I'd choose the spear and darts. I'm quick and agile enough. I could use them effectively for offense and defense.

>The sword, of course. Whatever was in my way, I'd cut it in half. (couples with short bow)

>The staff. It's simple. Non-threatening. It would be suitable for self-defense. (couples with short bow)

>I'd use the bow and dirk. They'd never see me to even know they were fighting.

Could we do sword and javelins?

6aa768 No.7393

Eh, what the hell.

>>7387

"I'll take the sword, Master Delvin. And the javelins."

He hands you the weapons. The sword is balanced. Sturdy. So are the javelins. They feel good in your hands.

"You' look like you might know how to use those." He claps you on the back.

You sling the basket of three javellins around your shoulder and back then fasten the sword belt around your waist.

Delvin says, "I'll meet you at the road. In front of the temple entrance."

(cont.)

"I'll speak to the other Masters. Perhaps we can get you a Dukka to ride."

6aa768 No.7394

A Dukka is a mutie horse. It's a lot heavier and wider, so slower than a true thread horse… But those don't exist anymore. This one has an extra eye.

"There's jerkey in this pouch, and some trinkets in this one. You can hock these for a bit of cash and tack. Here's your canteen. Mostly clean water, my boy. And a bottle of wine tucked in the saddle. Kappa…"

Delvin sighs.

"The Brotherhood would ask a favor of you before you leave. Gilead, the nearby settlement… We've received word that an Other has come down. Just one. The last time they came down, they took the children first."

He begins to look uncomfortable.

"These creatures are demons. And we are in hell. Kill it, Kappa. Will you do this for the Brotherhood?"

>I will investigate, Master Delvin. Should the creature need to be put down, so be it.

>I will kill the Other, Master. For God, and the Brotherhood.

>We will see when I get to Gilead.

>I'm not going that way. I'm going to Chookh.

>I want to see the wilderness, Delvin.

>Write-in

I've just, for the first time, picked up weapons, Master. If even a single Other is as terrible as you would have me believe, I would have no chance against it. Please, master, do not place this burden on my shoulders, for it is surely one I will fail.
