Hey guys, how about a game of Apotheosis?
For those not in the know, Apotheosis is a staggeringly popular forum game that started on the Speculative Evolution forums. To sum it up, you play as a god, or at the very least, a being that lives off the prayer and belief of humanity. You need the mortals to recognize and revere you. The more people who do so, the more powerful you become and the greater the miracles you can perform. What exactly you can do also depends on the myths surrounding you, as in, your powers aren't just tied to how many followers you have and how much worship you get, but also what those followers think of you. If the myths state that you can roast people alive, you may very well gain the power of spontaneous combustion, but you wouldn't be able to flood a city.
To begin with you must have a name, it must be a name which reflects the sort of being you desire to become. It must be a name which in time the mortals will recognize to either fear or love. Next you must enact the birth of your God/Goddess, this takes the form of a vision which is given to a chosen one. The contents of the vision is decided by you, please think carefully about what you are going to tell the human and also chose carefully who you are going to reveal yourself to. Once your prophet has been chosen and you have revealed yourself to him/her then the prophet will go about spreading your word, as this happens according to the contents of your vision myths of what powers you have begin to spread. From then on you use your powers to influence the world around you and gain more followers, if you begin to lose followers then your powers will diminish. If a God is forgotten then a God will die, thus you must ensure they worship you in any of the following ways:
Prayer- One of the most obvious, this is people invoking your name asking for help or just thanking you. This can also be done through song or prose. It is one of the weaker forms of worship although due to its ease it can often be done quite commonly and will allow your followers a much easier time blending into society.
Sacrifice- The most powerful form of worship due to it involving the giving of life to assert your glories. Animal sacrifice is fairly common, and is not morally frowned upon although the poorer members of society may avoid your religion out of necessity. Human sacrifice is far more potent, although other Gods can attempt to usurp you due to its unpopularity. Sacrifice is easier to maintain in times of desperation among your human subjects.
Construction- The second most powerful, this can range from the carving of idols to the building of huge temples. Your powers are increased around lands which are consecrated to you and you can have a much easier time in casting more permanent miracles.
Fear- If people actively fear your God's name being spoken and tremble at the thought of you then you will grow in power. However this prevents you from gaining more benevolent powers, so while it maybe easy for the terrified humans to whisper about how you cause pillars of fire to rain down on the Earth they are far less likely to ever say anything nice about you. Thus cementing your role as malevolent being, you would have to work far harder if you had a change of heart…
For a better idea of how this game works, please check out the original Apotheosis game on the Conceptual Evolution forum:
http://s1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Evolution/topic/5161204/1/What's unique about this quest is that everyone will be playing their own god, not just one controlled character like most. As such, everyone should be namefagging and working on their own rise to worship. From there, you're free to war and compete with one another as you please, forge and break alliances, make Pantheons and usurp followers. It's a mix between a competitive and cooperative writing game.
So, what is your name and how do you reveal yourself to your chosen prophet?

God: Gideon
I send a flash of inspiration to a philosopher interested in aeolipyles, Antikythera mechanisms and similar devices, imparting upon him inspiration of the design for a small, steam powered brass construction able to drive in a straight line, as well as the knowledge that this curiosity was a gift from the god Gideon.

While this development is and will be truly breathtaking, it was mainly the child of Aristarchos himself, though he knows for a fact that he connected the dots through divine guidance.
When the little machine is complete, Aristarchos makes a show of it and puts great emphasis on how it could be used in the future, speaking volumes of the deity that granted him the chance to further his research in such a way, Gideon. Most think of the old, eccentric inventor as a mad genius instead however, knowing full well of his past experiments with cogs and steam.

>>916The incredible amounts of information necessary to properly build, control and rule a kingdom is too much for the mortal mind to suddenly take in, as the chosen warlord falls off his horse in an epileptic fit. He is dead before his men know what to do. A god has to be careful with what exactly they bestow on mortals. A human being can only take so much.
While this is very punishing, it's also the result of a newbie mistake. I'm giving you a chance to correct this through the means of choosing another prophet among the men stunned by their commander's sudden seizure and death, using his technical "sacrifice" as a power source.

The following morning, Gerlach assembles his tribe and tells them of the messages that have been bestowed of him from the wise god Caelum. This god has promised them a much greater lot than what they are relegated to today and has told him just how to achieve it. The tribe makes their trek south and, indeed, invades a smaller and fairly unprotected town. The battle is brutal still, but with losses, the battered and bruised tribe finds themselves victorious. Any warriors or guards are slaughtered mercilessly, as any children are taken in for future slave labor.
Spurred and motivated by their victory, the tribe gathers themselves in the center of their new town the following night, sitting in a circle around a great bonfire. Gerlach steps up to the fire first, loudly exclaiming for further guidance from their new deity.

As the tutoring continues, Aristarchos introduces the five to his guiding god, Gideon. While they originally find the idea of a new, unknown god strange, the incredible jump in knowledge and development from their teacher is enough evidence to attempt contact, at the very least.

The town is fortified, tall walls of multiple thick layers of wood make a sufficient barrier. The earlier mentioned slaves are put to good use to rebuild what was damaged in the battles and schools are established. The tribe cheers for this new development, opting to construct a temple in the middle of the town, at the top of which they have another great bonfire every fifth day for nightly sessions (lead by Gerlach) to contact their deity.

God: Atax, Valour's Just Reward
Special: Gets human sacrifice directly through acts of war (with the correct adornment assumed and simple rite performed), drastically reducing the stigma of the sacrifice.
I send a dream to a young warrior, a man who throughout his childhood was plagued with illness and grew weak, spending his time in scholarly pursuits, but in his adolescence trained himself relentlessly and who has proved himself both fearless and fearsome in his first battle today.
As he drowses deeply, steeped in victorious drunkenness, I appear to him in the form of a slender but well-shaped virgin and caress his brow.
"Listen well, hoplite, for you are to be first and foremost amongst my many lovers: the beacon of Atax."
Pressing myself against his dream-form, I whisper slowly, softly, in his ear, pausing after each sentence until he understands it.
"Let the weak of spirit till the fields, the weak of arm gossip and argue in the stoas, and let the strong win glory in battle against the vile and ignorant."
"Let every man of courage and resolve adorn his plain shield with xiphiums and daffodils, and into the ear of each foul wretch delivered to a swift and deserved end by a gladius let my name be murmured even as their eyes darken, that their wretched souls may bear tidings of the sacrifice to me on their way to the pale and empty mist which awaits all cowards in the beyond. But to he who clears the battlefield in my name I will surely send my blessing - a swift strike, the aroma of sweet grapes at unexpected moments, and in the course of time and valor, as crops come even to the meek harvester, so will my valorous worshippers find themselves the objects of womens' desires."
"He who would ask my protection, a steady shield in battle, is no true follower of Atax. Pray for more strength and speed to slay greater foes with your right arm; look to your own manhood alone to keep aloft your salvation and my sigil. It is even thus that while the lover nourishes her mate, he would be ashamed to say to her 'Whereunto shall I turn to defend us from the wolves? Stand before me and shield you me from their teeth with your soft skin.' Even so shall a man be ashamed to ask of Atax that she with her soft flesh shield him from harm, even as she nourishes him with slaying strength and tender ministrations."
"Unto he who has slain countless foes and lived a good and sacred life, offering up my name to the dying, ceding to me the glory of battle in the understanding that it rebounds upon him triply, I will in the fullness of time send the Sacred Concubines, in whose ministrations he will find the very knowledge and euphoria of the ether. But the Concubines will not appear to even such a man, unless it be that he for all his career in the name of Atax hath not slain a man and neglected to mention her; nor hath he in all his career in her name bed a woman but that she first made professions of filiality to Atax, and woven in her hair the xiphiums and daffodils."
"To he who lies dying, his shield arm beaten down at last, bethink yourself of what sacrifices you have made to Atax, and if you know them to be worthy, free yourself from care, and murmur the name of Atax as you pass, that your valorous soul may bear tidings of your valiance and brokenness to me on their way to the pale and empty mist, and be taken in and clutched instead to the bosom of Atax for all time, in the manner of drunken lovers in the fullness of spring. No wound will remain unmended when a true warrior's soul is gathered to the nourishing bosom of Atax."
"In all things be wary and cunning, in battle be savage and elusive, and in your innermost mind remain through all things joyous and detached in the anticipation of the women Atax will bring you, and the union you hope to win with Atax in the hereafter."
"Now wake, bold hoplite, and be scribe for the last time as has been your quondam wont. Write all I have told you, and see that it is copied by those whose arms are not suited for instruments more bold than the pen. Seek ye out your most valorous companions of this last battle and relate unto them the blessings and the admonishments of Atax, Valour's Just Reward."
