Working in an office full of women, many of whom are young, single gals, I hear all the time, “Where are all the good men out there?” Even in this post-feminist age of asserting independence from men and having both a career and a family, women still want their prince and these days, he can be really tough to find.
Bill Bennett, who used to work for President George H. W. Bush and is now at the Claremont Institute, just came out with a new book called, "The Book of Man: Readings on the Path to Manhood," and it could not have been released at a better time.
Bennett writes about how the culture has so badly confused males in what their role in life should be that they just never grow up – or man up for that matter. They have fallen behind in college where women now surpass men in getting their college degrees. These women are getting jobs in the workforce while the men are lingering in dead-end jobs – if they are working at all. While opportunity for women is a good thing, men should not take this as a cue to coast.
And don’t even get me started on the maturity level of these Peter Pan-like boys. The statistic from Bennett’s book that perhaps struck me the most is that teenage boys, ages 12-to-17 years old, actually spend less time playing video games than 18-to-34-year-old men. I can understand the desire to play a video game here and there as a kid, but as an adult? Grow up.
These men should be studying in college, getting a job, and contributing to society through the workforce and family. How in the world do they have time to play video games for hours? The answer is that they just don’t ever grow up.
But are women contributing to the demise of the man? Feminism has been detrimental to the identity of the American male. Men have been rebuked if they pull out a chair or open a door for a woman. If they offer to pay for dinner (which they should), their date may be offended and demand to split the check because she can pay her own way. – Ladies, it’s not such a bad thing to be treated to dinner unless that meal comes with sexual expectations, which is another column.

That has been my experience working in an office. I couldn't take it anymore.
I would like to take computer programming in college. But would I actually *enjoy* waking up 6:30-7am, devoting my entire morning ritual to unpaid preparation for work, fighting rush hour traffic, punching the clock, working in the office until at least 5pm or later, fighting rush hour traffic on the way home again, prepare and eat dinner at home and then zone out in front of the computer/TV until 11pm and then do it all over again tomorrow? Waiting for TGIF every week even though I won't really be doing much different on weekends than weeknights anyway. And "going out" with friends on weekends is overrated from my experience.

Trade skills ain't nothing to turn your nose up at, Anon. A Licensed Journeyman Plumber makes between $13 - $33 per hour, and that's for a plumber who's still technically "in school." Keep in mind, you're likely going to be in Apprenticeship during your education, which means you'll be making money while learning to do your job.

Speaking of costs, the average university student is easily going to be tens of thousands of dollars in debt (maybe more) by the time they graduate with no guarantee of employment afterwards. Now, these are mostly suggestions and the plumber is allowed to charge what they feel is fair (barring company/union policies,) but the overall point is that, if you spend 5 minutes plunging a toilet, you're getting paid for a whole hour's worth of work with nobody questioning it.
People often associate trade jobs like plumbing and electrical work with the "failures" of society. But you'd be surprised how much you get paid for doing a job that no one else wants to do.

A big, big reason I think for the whole kid-men, is that sons don't bond with their father. Or rather, fathers don't let their sons bond with them. Before all this automation and shit, things that needed fixing in the house was done by the man, and his son would contribute (all depending on age how much responsibility he got ofc). So even if the kid was 17, and the law for fiddling at a basic level with electricity was 18, he had tons of experience.
That is all gone. I don't know if the father-generation feels like their masculinity has been stolen and they gain it back by picking or throwing their child under the bus. But the end-result is that the father will never allow the kid to grow up and be better.
Its easier to work late, pay for the childs driving lesson and throw a sarcastic joke when he fails his test. it seriously depends on where you are in terms of pay.
Here in Canada some woman at a desk makes as much as a plumber (with the added bonus they'll turn their noses up at plumbers and they get dank government benefits for spending half their day minimum on Facebook). Plumbing is one of those jobs who's pay is hugely disproportionate to the amount of skill and knowledge required to be competent. The actual work can be pretty fucking miserable too. But, it can lead to jobs like stationary engineer where you get paid six figures to sit on your ass and notify maintenance underlings when trouble arises.
But, every competent plumber I've met is pretty handy at carpentry and electrical work as well. Just good handymen in general. My brother who's 7 years older than me is a really solid plumber and has been doing an entire reno by himself.
Here in Ontario being a solid electrician gets you paid more and is way easier. I'm not saying plumbing is the worst thing to get into, but between it and electrician, electrician is the better bet a lot of the time. Plumbing is what I'd go into if practical knowledge is what I was after and didn't give a shit how hard the work is or how much I get paid.
