I went on another bandcamp splurge.
I'll go for months just adding albums to my wishlist thinking I'll get round to buying them another time… hey, free streaming, why not.
Then something happens in life that pisses me off, throws me off, and I just buy up my wishlist in one go.
Last time I did that it was in the wake of the Yes campaign losing the Indyref.
This time round, it's because failing my driving theory gave me cause to re-evaluate my situation. It's the third time I've taken theory, but the first time I failed (third time unlucky I guess). The other two passes expired before I was able to pass my practical.
I reckon I could get my theory under my belt if I went at it again, but for what? Another two years to go by with no practical test past? To carry on with college setbacks? To carry on unemployed relying on hand-outs from my mum?
I don't even know what I want to do with my life anymore because over the years, the question of what I want has become irrelevant, subordinate to the question of what I'm actually able to do…
I digress.
One of the albums on this wishlist splurge was an album put out by a guy who was in the year above me at school, an album where he combines folk (which is really what I'm in it for) with synth (which, when combined, is and has long been his trademark sound).
The track I enjoyed most as far as this combination went is one called 'The Other Guy'. I liked it purely from a musical perspective, before giving the lyrics a read. But then I read the lyrics, and shit… robots could relate to this.
It's about a couple of guys who enter manhood on the path to NEEThood and absorbed with being eternal manchildren, until one guy gets a girlfriend, scrubs himself up, and throws the friendship under the bus.
The other guy (Ted) feels betrayed by his former friend, but also realises that he wishes he was in Abe's position, successful and with a girlfriend, while all Ted has to his name is his skill as a 1337 gamer…
presumably he eventually finds his way onto robot imageboards… who knows.
