 No.1350[Last 50 Posts]

I've nothing to do and it's 5:45 am and my mind is preoccupied and therefore I cannot sleep.

I'm going to make a music thread. There's already a bandcamp thread however this can just be for the discussion of music in general. I'll bump with some of my favorite songs.

Video related is a cover sung by Jeff Mangum (of Neutral Milk Hotel) of a song originally sung by the Paris Sisters, if I'm recall properly. I've been obsessed with this song for quite some time for some reason.

I've always enjoyed his voice probably the reason I know all of the lyrics to In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and the lyrics just are really touching. They're plain and simple and could be spoken by anyone, regardless of their gender or age or anything and I just love it. It gives me feels.

This next song is by Keaton Henson, one of my favorite artists. I discovered him on a lonely night (so early that it was actually morning) of scouring the deep recesses of YouTube for some kind of song to listen to, and I stumbled upon his song Charon.

It was so touching that I was moved to tears. With the added visual aide of his puppets representing the message he was trying to convey, overall it painted a bleak image about suicide. This prompted me to download both of his albums (Dear and Birthdays, they're available on YouTube and I highly rec both of them.)

There is only one song by him that I've actually disliked, and that was Kronos off of his album Birthdays. It's the only song that doesn't have that soothing, somber melody to it, but rather tries to adopt some kind of alternative rock style.

Regardless, he's a wonderful artist and this is an especially good song I've attached, called Small Hands. I think it'd be very touching to most of you.

Get it? Small hands? Touching? huhuhu

By the way, if anyone has a last.fm they should add me at http://www.last.fm/user/Anodynic. I'm always open to new music suggestions.

This is Kokopelli Face Tattoo by Andrew Jackson Jihad. While the tune might sound more upbeat, the lyrics have a deeper meaning than one might originally think.

It's basically stating that with every good comes a bad, and it's pointless to try to question or hate the bad things in life since they're essentially necessary in order for there to be nice things in life.

"Have you ever wanted to be? Have you ever wanted to see someone better in the mirror? Have you ever wanted to go? Have you ever wanted to know somewhere greener, somewhere cleaner? I bet you got something beautiful in mind…"

The Mountain Goats - Color in Your Cheeks

A song about friends being there for you, especially when you need them. No matter where you're located, your friends will always have a home for you and will be there to take care of you

that is if any of us actually had real friends.

"Come on in, we haven't slept for weeks. Drink some of this, this'll put color in your cheeks!"

I find it to improve my mood a bit since it's just something nice to think about. The lyrics are also insanely descriptive while being short, and really give the listener the feeling of being able to envision these people arriving at their friend's doorsteps.

 No.1354

G-good morning to you!
I couldn't sleep. I was thinking about a person I had a nice 7 hour conversation with yesterday and ended up being too excited to sleep. I don't mind though, things are more peaceful in the morning.

And I find it to be a nice way to collect/store the artists I like and such. I have a piss poor memory so it really helps. The radio feature is nice, especially during a game of league of legends or doing housework or something.

I use Grooveshark if I'm looking for an album in particular, though.

This is also a song that I've a bit of a connection to. It used to cheer me up whenever I was feeling down and basically just restates the importance of enjoying life. After all, everyone grows old and dies, so why not just have a bit of fun?

I think it also touches on chasing romance and traditional courting. Sometime you just have to be blunt when you like someone, otherwise you could miss an opportunity.

I also secretly love to sing even though I'm terrible at it. You can bet your bucks that I sing this as loud as possible whenever I'm alone. This is one of the greatest songs to sing along with

This here is Elliott Smith. To anyone reading this thread who is unfamiliar with him ur a faget

No, but in all seriousness, he's one of my favorite artists and I've spent many a nights listening to his albums over and over. If you think Thom Yorke brings feels, you've never met my friend Elliott here.

Well, you'll never get the chance to meet him. He killed himself. RIP in pieces sweet prince.

I used to know the meaning to this song specifically, however after ages of listening to it and reinterpreting, I like to leave the meaning as ambiguous rather than the one he gave in an interview somewhere.

Also, I never used to appreciate artists singing live until Elliott. He sounds pretty much exactly the same live as he does in his studio recordings and I feel like every new live version that I listen to just has an extra dash of emotion. I love the way he's able to be so expressive and pour his heart out into his music.

Do you like/have you heard of David Gray?
He lives with the curse of having all of his other works overshadowed by White Ladder, which is a good album, but he wrote so many other good albums.

I really love his voice, it's very unique and powerful. I'll definitely have to look up an album. Which do you think I should try first? Thinking of White Ladder, however I don't want to be disappointed by his other stuff, so perhaps I should save the best for last.

The Olivia Tremor Control - I Have Been Floated

This one is kind of different from the other of stuff I've posted. Has more of a psychedelic touch to it as well as using electronics rather than just the acoustic guitar and other supporting instruments like my prior songs I've posted.

This one is great and honestly I was disappointed when I checked out the rest of this album since the other songs were absolutely blown away by this.

>>1360
Ooh, I like this one as well. He looks young but has the kind of voice that seems like he's been through the world and back. It's very refreshing.

>>1361
like i said, i think the attention white ladder takes from his other works is unfair.
it might be a more balanced album, but that doesn't mean other albums have cracking songs on them
his earliest albums (from which i've linked songs) had more of an in-your-face, guitar heavy, rocky feel,
while his later works (including white ladder) have more instrumentation, are more nuanced and softer. that progression has its pros and cons, it really depends on what style you like, if not both.
i'd say one album to perhaps leave out for the time being is life in slow motion. that one isn't as accessible.
lost songs 95-98 has also been noted as a complete depression fest, a downer of an album. great songs, just most of them are a bit sad.
i don't know what order i'd recommend getting his albums in. if you prefer his earlier work, just straight out go for a century ends, sell sell sell… maybe flesh, although i haven't actually given that album as much listening to.
if you prefer his newer stuff, then screw it, just go with white ladder first and reach out from there.
i don't think you'd be disappointed with the others as you'd be eager to find the gems in his other works to enjoy as well.
ok, last one from his earlier albums (this one's from flesh)

and you're right, he has a strong voice. his corner of the world stretches from north wales, through cambridgeshire, up to manchester, so you get the welsh enunciation of vowels with the harder mancunian accent.

Ooh, I could tell he was from the UK just couldn't pinpoint where.

This one is a lot more rough and gritty, not my flavor, honestly. Reminds me somewhat of Tom Waits or Swans but with a tad lighter voice (And I'm not partial to either of those artists. Can objectively see why they might be liked but apart from that I find them distasteful.)

He definitely improved his voice over the years and refined his voice. Almost sounds like a completely different person. Definitely have to be in a certain type of mood to enjoy his works, though.

>>1365
>Didn't expect me to be into the Cinematic Orchestra.
I'm full of surprises. I can't wait to show them to you. ;^) Pink Floyd is pretty good, they're entry level prog/psychedelic and generally the first artist people dabble in when they get into the genre.

>>1365
Unpopular opinion time, I listened to Nick Drake's entire album Pink Moon quite a few times and never really saw why it was rated so highly (on /mu/ it's generally overall praised). I thought it was pretty good at points but didn't care for it too much. Like I enjoy the style of music but something about his sound specifically just didn't sit right with me.

This one is kind of the epitome of teenage girl song that Sage actually showed me (she said she was going to a concert and wanted to take me to my first one. Not sure if I should go and waste my first time on an artist I don't even know and feel is mediocre.) It was definitely an acquired taste but I actually like it a lot because even though it's super pleb shit it actually pretty much described me kinda spot on, ha. Lots of relateable feels that nobody else will probably understand, since, yknow, they're all generic edgy teen feels.

so were you actually, we were setting up an oil rig in the cromarty firth and you were getting nervous about not understanding UK law about beginning drilling operations with so many boats about and i was like "nahh if that were the case we'd never get any work done because the boat traffic here is so constant, that'd be a silly law"… the cromarty firth isn't actually that busy irl, but it is chock full of oil rigs

damn…

wait i don't know those feels, what's that about?

>>1607
good song but those feels don't click with me. course, my dad wasn't abusive, but my step-dad was and tbh it was the only time i seriously contemplated killing someone.
as for my father and grandfathers' gross negligence in familial matters, let's say i'd only write them a short eulogy.

>>1608
ok so aside from the revenge fantasies, you're shit scared of cancer ruining your life… guess that's understandable.

>all that great outdoors with hardly any people
I'll come over and we can explore together! What are some qt sites to see in Scotland?

>probably one of my favourite of the ones you've posted so far.

Entry-level /mu/core album by Brand New called The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me. I rec it 100% and love their albums.

>that movie doesn't seem to be highly rated but i'll take your word for it haha.

THAT'S BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE WRONG. It is a really, really wonderful movie and just attacked me all over in the feels. You definitely must watch it sometime.

>do you have irl experience with those feels?

Hmm. No, I don't think so. I mean I suppose at the end of our relationship, when I found out I was going to move, my first real IRL bf Tom probably stayed with me just for physical reasons, but I would like to think that he was not that much of a dick and that the 6 months we spent together meant something to him.

>why dwell on it unless it actually happens?

H Y P O C R I T E
Lmao. I dwell because I am terrified of cancer man, as you know already. I think it's just because of my fear of death, but cancer seems like the worst way to go. You feel yourself slowly getting weak, slowly dying, having to aggressively fight it that takes all of your strength, your hair falls out and you become bald and weak and shriveled and then suddenly it's gone and you are given some hope and go around spending time with everyone and then you get a "just kidding, it came back even worse" call from the doctor and DIE two weeks later. It's just terrible.

I'm terribly sorry about your aunt. Was it a nice dream at least?

Well of course it was since we were there together, but the part with her in it?

>wait i don't know those feels, what's that about?

I think personally it's about her falling into a very depression and/or is slowly dying. She just feels empty and is talking to her lover as he tries to cover for her and help her.
I could be wrong though.

>but my step-dad was and tbh it was the only time i seriously contemplated killing someone.

That's where the feels came from.

I live on the east of Ross-shire. as you travel westwards to the west coast, there's a lot of nice places. also, south-southeast of Inverness is the Cairngorms which are lovely.
But the one place I want to spend more time in is Harris, the more mountainous southernmost part of the largest Island of the Western Isles.

>but the part with her in it?

the thing is the last time I saw my aunt IRL was october 2013. At that time, she knew she was going to die, which is why she was visiting everyone to get closure… but she didn't actually let on that she was dying until after that.
I never saw her after that. for almost 11 months, during which time she became bedridden.
I would have loved to have seen her before she passed.
In my dream, I actually did. I dreamt that I got to speak to her one last time before she parted.

Aw…that really stinks about your aunt. At least she went around and spent some time with you. Perhaps that was her way of seeing you, yknow. Death is shrouded in mystery, nobody knows for certain what happens afterward. She could be out there somewhere, in some other dimension, and contacting you through dreams, you never know! :)

I've looked up a bit and I think I'll make a bucket list for places I want to see in Scotland. I plan on traveling to as many countries as possible when I'm older (on vacations and such for like a week or two at a time. I'm definitely going to find somewhere to settle down though, preferably in America or Europe, and live there for the rest of my life, as moving every 6 moths to a year has turned me off from the idea of not having a place to call 'home' when I'm older. However traveling is great, ofc.)

I think I want to see the pretty Holyrood Palace/Edinburgh Castle (I've never seen a castle irl), Mary King's Close, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery/Museum, The Outlook Tower (It apparently is a fun place of illusions), and then the beautiful Highlands and DEFINITELY LOCH NESS (maybe I will see the monster and get eaten alive, it'd be so neat)

I used to only want to go to England and Ireland (s-sorry Scotland and Wales) but now from hearing more about it from you and Autphag it seems like it has lots of interesting places and people :3.

Plus it'd be nice to see men in skirts walking around everywhere (I JEST)

Take in what they tell you to
I spit to spit they spew to spew
My aura draws - you follow suit
Finks in packs and bred in twos
Peasant thoughts and peasant dreams
You were born to bow to me
There comes a time to test yourself
When you live a coward that is how you die
Continuously slowed down by our perception of ourselves
But in a world of servants and liars and spies

I am king.

sickened thirst, sickened thirst
glues it together
