>Using the absolute cheapest shit
That's solid entry-level scent though, along with herbal essences.
If you really want to get into a bit nicer stuff I'd go to a salon and use some of their rec'd brands, although I know that might not be financially possible so the best thing I can suggest to you to use is a brand specifically for your hair.
I currently use John Frieda's blonde collection shampoo and conditioner for my hair (since I dyed it blonde recently) and it's pretty great. My hair has already gotten a bit lighter and is softer and easier to brush. Has a smell that's just good but not really specific to any fruitiness so it won't clash with perfume or lotions that I apply. The only bad reviews about it I've really seen is by absolute tards who don't apply it daily as it should be used, expect results after one use or who are used to much more luxurious products.
Also for body wash if you want a reasonably priced but good smelling/feeling one, I'd use philosophy. They're about $15 - $40 a bottle and last for a long time. (www.philosophy.com)
