Not defending her in anyway and I certainly find her philosophy down right stupid but she has some thing of a point.

Hitler came out on top of Germany because he wanted to help them out of their post WW1 depression and worked for the better of the German people.
While Stalin and communism in general has always used the tagline of being for the people and bringing the working class up.

She's not saying that altruism in itself has caused major horrors but major horrors have been caused in the supposed name of altruism

yeah but those are only two examples. the idea that that has been the driving force behind every atrocity is stupid. If she had just said "in WW2" or something I would understand, but that's not what she did. It's also turning a blind eye to the good things altruism does.

I never really looked into her, I just assumed she was intelligent because of her reputation. Holy shit though, that is a fucking stupid thing to say.

Oh absolutely the quote in of itself is absolute horseshit. But just to give it contex she was a Russian who lived through the October revolution who had everything taken away in name of the people.

So while she may be saying all of history she is mainly focusing on Communist Russia.

Yeah but that makes just another bitter person that lived through communism. Not to belittle her experience but if she is talking about of her ass because of emotional issues there is no reason to prop her up as some kind of intellectual. She was a big asshole to, it's not like she was inspired to make the world a better place.

i mean it's true, but it's typically good people that are manipulated by bad people. Rand was a pretty bad person if you read about her personal life.
