Nearly 900,000 military veterans have officially pending applications for health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the department’s inspector general said Wednesday, but “serious” problems with enrollment data make it impossible to determine how many veterans were actively seeking VA health care.

About one-third of the 867,000 veterans with pending applications are likely deceased, the report says, adding that “data limitations” prevent investigators from determining how many now-deceased veterans applied for health care benefits or when. The applications go back nearly two decades, and officials said some applicants may have died years ago.

More than half the applications listed as pending as of last year do not have application dates, and investigators “could not reliably determine how many records were associated with actual applications for enrollment” in VA health care, the report said.

The report also says VA workers incorrectly marked thousands of unprocessed health-care applications as completed and may have deleted 10,000 or more electronic “transactions” over the past five years.

Linda Halliday, the VA’s acting inspector general, said the agency’s Health Eligibility Center “has not effectively managed its business processes to ensure the consistent creation and maintenance of essential data” and recommended a multi-year plan to improve accuracy and usefulness of agency records.

Halliday’s report came in response to a whistleblower who said more than 200,000 veterans with pending applications for VA health care were likely deceased.

More than 300,000 dead vets still on VA’s active health care enrollment list

More than 300,000 dead veterans are still listed in VA computers as actively trying to sign up for health care — part of a massive 860,000-claim backlog that hasn’t been cleared up, according to an audit Wednesday that portrayed a department struggling with the basics of tracking benefits.

Veterans Affairs workers appear to have deleted another 10,000 benefit applications without ever processing them, and 13 percent on the rolls have been awaiting a decision for more than five years, the department’s inspector general said.

Many of those have died, but the VA never went back to delete their names, leaving a system so messy that the department can’t properly triage cases and figure out who needs help the most urgently, investigators said.

“Overstated pending enrollment records create unnecessary difficulty and confusion in identifying and assisting veterans with the most urgent need for health care enrollment,” the investigators said in the report. “Additionally, outreach efforts to obtain additional information for enrollment eligibility may have been frustrating and upsetting to family members of deceased veterans.”

A U.S. military veteran in Florida spent more than $2,000 on multiple billboards blasting the Department of Veterans Affairs this month over the increasing number of veteran deaths.

The former Marine, Roger Gagnon, says his intention is to bring nationwide attention to the dire health situation facing veterans across the country.

One of the billboards, placed along a busy street in Orlando, boldly states, “VA is lying, veterans are dying!”

“It’s literally a life or death situation,” Gagnon told WFTV.

Gagnon says he began his campaign against the VA after years of poor service, revealing how he once collapsed near his home from a seizure condition while stuck on a VA waiting list.

Even after spending several weeks in a coma, Gagnon says he was still withheld from receiving timely healthcare.

“When I was let go from the hospital, I was told see a neurosurgeon in three days. I saw a neurosurgeon three months later,” Gagnon said. “The VA says they have the waiting period down to less than 30 days. There’s another lie.”

Aside from raising awareness on the VA’s poor treatment of military personnel, Gagnon also helps walk other veterans through the process of obtaining medical attention.

“I help guys get their claims through, help them though the process,” said Gagnon.

Gagnon’s Facebook group, entitled “VA is Lying,” currently has more than 15,000 members and growing.

“The VA is killing people every single day,” Gagnon said.

According to WFTV, “Three signs went up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Monday,” with more possibly on the way.

“It’s not about me, I’m all set. This is about the people who are in the service and the ones who are fixing to go in the service.” Gagnon added. “They got that last nerve of mine that I just got to the point where I said, ‘I’ll eat Ramen noodles for a month, but I’m going to let them know that I’m upset.’”

In 2014, a report by the Veteran Administration’s Office of Inspector General admitted that the VA misled the country about its infamous “VA scandal” which saw countless veterans dying after being placed on secret waiting lists.

A separate report released just last week astonishingly revealed that as many as 307,000 veterans died while waiting for care from the VA.

Here's a short history of abuse from the VA. I logged information about all the criminal neglect and other VA scandles being reported in the news back in 2013 through 2014. No justice ever came from any of it. Go figure. Vets are still treated like trash by the govt they serve: https://archive.is/Wce0p

Here's How the US Government Treats Vets: VA Disability Claims Found Shredded in the Garbage

Does Uncle Sam hate his own military veterans? You might think so given his history of mistreatment, medical experimentation and outright disdain for them.

The latest insult is actually a repeat of an earlier one: Again, the Veterans Administration has failed the very clients that the nation's largest health care system was established to serve.

Two California lawmakers are demanding to know why and how paperwork necessary to finalize veterans' disability claims wound up as trash in a shredding bin at a Los Angeles care facility.

As reported by the Military Times:

The latest embarrassing episode for the Veterans Affairs Department comes alongside questions surrounding 240,000 deceased veterans on agency medical waiting lists and worries from senators that physician credentialing problems in Arizona may stop cancer treatments for veterans there.

Staff members for Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Calif., said that officials in the VA's Inspector General's office have confirmed that key pieces of paperwork from vets' claims files were discovered "inappropriately placed in shred bins" at the Los Angeles Regional Office.

"Such misconduct could have a devastating impact on the affected veterans and their families, resulting in the loss of critical information and adversely affecting the adjudication of veteran claims," the two lawmakers said in their letter to VA Secretary Bob McDonald. "Simply put, this is unacceptable."

VA Wrongly Tells Veterans They're Dead, Cuts Off Benefits

Mike Rieker, a 69-year-old Vietnam Navy veteran, relies on his Veterans Affairs benefits to get him through the month.

That's why the Pinellas County, Florida, resident was alarmed when his VA check didn't show up in his bank account Monday. He called the Department of Veterans Affairs office to find out why, and their response was stunning: The benefits had been suspended because he was dead.

"Well, I'm not," Rieker retorted. "I woke up this morning and I'm feeling rather chipper, in fact."
