Over Half of EU Countries Are Opting Out of GMOs

Sixteen countries have alerted the European Union that they want to opt out of E.U.-approved GM crops.

Members of the economic bloc have until Oct. 3 to let the E.U. know if they were requesting to opt out of growing GMO produce from major companies like Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta and Pioneer, and according to the Food Navigator, a food trade publication, countries including Germany, Italy, Denmark, Bulgaria and Cyprus recently filed their requests and applications, increasing the number to 16. Exactly how many countries will ultimately opt out could be confirmed as soon as Monday.

In August, Scotland publicly said it would prohibit GMO crops out of concern that they could damage the country’s “clean and green” brand.

“Scotland is known around the world for our beautiful natural environment – and banning growing genetically modified crops will protect and further enhance our clean, green status,” Rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead said in a statement at the time.

“A growing number of governments are rejecting the commission’s drive for GM crop approvals,” Greenpeace’s E.U. food policy director Franziska Achterberg told the Guardian. “They don’t trust the E.U. safety assessments and are rightly taking action to protect their agriculture and food. The only way to restore trust in the E.U. system now is for the commission to hit the pause button on GM crop approvals and to urgently reform safety testing and the approval system.”

The Guardian reports that environmentalists have praised the news, while industry and biotech supporters have responded to opt-outs with “weary resignation.”

Studies that link Genetically Modified (GM) food to multiple human health ailments are not the only thing that has millions of people questioning the production of GM food. There is fact that previously classified secret government documents exist which show how the Bush administration developed ways to retaliate against countries that were refusing to use GM seeds, for example. If information about our food needs to be concealed from the public domain, then something has gone seriously wrong with the food industry. It’s great to have an organization like WikiLeaks shed some light into the world that’s been hidden from us for so many years.

The cables reveal that the State Department was lobbying all over the world for Monsanto and other major biotech corporations. They reveal that American diplomats requested funding to send lobbyists for the biotech industry to meet with politicians and agricultural officials in “target countries.” These included countries in Africa, Latin America, and Europe.

Coming soon to your grocery store's seafood counter: genetically engineered salmon.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first Atlantic salmon that is genetically engineered. The decision comes as critics charge the so-called "frankenfish" is unsafe and could harm the environment.

AquAdvantage Salmon has a genetically created trait that makes the salmon grow faster than regular salmon.

The agency cited several measures that are being taken to contain the fish and prevent their escape into open water.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said she was in "shock" at the FDA's approval, saying that genetically engineered fish could harm the environment and may be unsafe.

The senator, who hails from a state with a robust seafood industry, said such salmon "seems to be more science experiment than fish or food."

"Now that the decision has been made, the next step is to ensure that Americans know what they are consuming," she said.

Genetically modified organisms in food have become an incredibly heated issue with activists pushing for such food to be labeled because it is unsafe.

If you’ve been waiting to finally see Monsanto – one of the most hated companies in the world – to pay for its ecocide, knowing harm of human life, and devastation of our pollinators, then you won’t have to wait much longer. Several activist groups joined by food and farming experts are suing Monsanto for their crimes against humanity.

Finally, Monsanto, the US-based, transnational company responsible for introducing multiple genetically modified crops and numerous toxic chemicals into our environment – including saccharin, aspartame, polystyrene, DDT, dioxin, Agent Orange, petroleum based fertilizers, recombinant bovine growth hormones (rGBH), Round Up (glyphosate), Lasso (an herbicide used in Europe), Bt toxic plants, and more – will have to answer to the world for its reign of terror. Monsanto has acted with severe negligence, and the hubris and supremacy of a corporation given personhood, but no longer.

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA), IFOAM International Organics, Navdanya, Regeneration International (RI), and Millions Against Monsanto, along with dozens of global food, farming, and environmental justice groups announced at the United Nations conference held recently in Paris that an international court of lawyers and judges will assess Monsanto’s criminal liability for their atrocious acts.

The court, in The Hague, Netherlands, will use the UN’s ‘Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights’ developed in 2011 to assess damages for Monsanto’s acts against human life and the environment.

The court will also rely on the Rome Statute that created the International Criminal Court in The Hague in 2002, and it will consider whether to reform international criminal law to include crimes against the environment, or ecocide, as a prosecutable criminal offense.

The proceedings will take place on World Food Day, October 16, 2016.

The government in Taiwan recently passed legislation that would effectively prohibit any food containing genetically modified ingredients from being served to children in school meals.

The decision was made primarily due to potential health and environmental hazards revolving around genetically modified foods, as stated by Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Lin Shu-fen, one of the amendments’ sponsors.

Taiwan imports nearly 2.3 million tons of soybeans each year, with 90% being genetically engineered. Though the GM crop is primarily used as animal feed in Taiwan, if the soybeans were used in meals for schoolchildren, Shu-fen and others fear that it would have a negative impact on both physical and psychological health.

Legislator Lu Shiow-yen of the Kuomintang agrees, saying that children would be the victims of unnecessary risks if they were exposed to foods containing GMOs.

The result? Legislation that bans GMOs from school meals, along with the promotion of consuming locally-grown, fresh farm produce and other food ingredients.

What’s more, 103 of the city’s 235 schools had already omitted GMOs, so the other portion of schools will now have to follow suit probably within the next year.

The news comes shortly after Russia’s Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would be the world’s #1 exporter of non-GMO foods.
