I generally don't watch anime, but recently watched Death Note.
I felt it was a very easy to watch for someone with my delicate western sensibilities especially due to the localisation and production values.
In the past, I've found a lot of anime to be confusing, especially Evangelion.
What can you recommend to me based on that info.

If you want stuff that's easily digestible for a western audience but still has some meat to it I would recommend Monster, Any Satoshi Kon movie (Perfet Blue is often compared to Black Swan even), The Tatami Galaxy, The Big O, and maybe Texhnolyze? Many of my non-anime watching friends have also enjoyed Psycho-Pass and Kaiji.

That show was so terrible, the only redeeming factor was the soundtrack. Eden of the East however, had a similar world-changing terrorist plot that was actually engaging, though the sequel films were terrible

The animation was also great and even though the quality certainly decreased after Five was introduced and the payoff was somewhat disappointing, I would still say its qualities overshadow its flaws.
I haven't watched Eden of the East so I cannot compare both shows.

If you liked Death Note, you will love

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

It has all of the mind games and logic that goes on in Death Note. The whole thing is people trying to outsmart each other.

Both protagonists are geniuses
Both protagonists are high-school aged
Both protagonists have a supernatural power
Both protagonists are trying to create a world of justice
Both protagonists are malicious and heartless in pursuit of their goals
Both protagonists must keep their identities secret
Law enforcement is involved heavily
Very similar "the plot thickens" moments
Family plays a large role
There are religious aspects to both

>Differences (the following are for Code Geass, but not Death Note)
Robots and combat
More colorful and high-quality animation
Some fan-service
Wide range of character tropes
Not quite as predictable

All in all, it's a good show–and I hate robot animes and fan-service.

I thought the first film was the worst really, I was referring to the television series as being worthwhile. it's been a couple years, but te original series had an engaging plot and characters, and didn't shove it's message down your throat with huge speeches.

The first movie was just boring and forgettable for me, but the second film was almost offensively bad as it's literally 2 hours of Ayn-Rand tier speeches abot the values of society interspersed with a few action scenes.
