Holy shit don't watch this show. I suffered through 21 episodes of this garbage because so many people kept recommending it, and I regret every second of it.

"It gets better later on" yeah, fuck you, that's the same shit they said about FF13; you just gotta spend 50 hours in the game and then it gets good.

No. Fuck off. If something is good it shouldn't take it 10+ hours to become entertaining.

The only remotely touching thing was the ghost, and after that arc they literally just used it for comedy relief.

Stop recommending this garbage.

The VN came first but it's long as fuck and full of boring school life shit. Once you collect all the orbs of light in the game by getting all the good/true ends, which takes like 80 hours (I might be slightly exaggerating, according to this http://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=1736 ), you unlock the after story, which is another route that supposedly the bulk of the baww comes from.

The anime goes Clannad, then after story, and is an adaptation of the main stories and the after story. I'm not sure if the anime focuses on one route or tries to include elements of them all. I tried the anime, didn't like it, and dropped it. Later I tried playing the VN and got through one route before losing my patience (I have a fucking awful attention span though). The proper order, in accordance with the production order would be to play the VN first, although I can't actually advise that.
