I do recommend Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982)… everything else after that is downhill from that (except Do You Remember Love)

Bokurano is like someone watched NGE and decided that it was possible to make a mecha anime that lost the silly religious symbolism, but got twice as fucked up.
