What are the essentials for a newfag to have a basic understanding of the classics as well as the current anime scene?

Well, for the current scene you should watch at least one show by each of the major studios. About the classics you should check the threads going on about 70's - 90's anime.

If you're feeling masochistic, watch a bit of all the neverending shounen shit like Naruto. It'll probably make you want to end yourself but you will learn something guaranteed.
