What are some good shows to watch for someone who's just getting into anime? I've seen a few interesting shows and decided to check the genre out, but none of my friends are really into it so I don't have anyone to get advice from.

If it helps, I tend to like complex storylines. I also liked Spirited Away, and my favorite non-anime genres are cyberpunk, sci-fi, and film noir.

I think Legend of The Galatic heroes doesn't have mechs.

But seriously, learn to enjoy mechs, else you'll be missing a bunch of great stuff, a bunch of cyberpunk stuff has mechs for example.

And look at the chart thread, there charts for your favorite genres. This cyberpunk chart is small, but has some of the most famous stuff.
