If you want more brooding Oshii films Try out Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh(written by Oshii, not directed), and Patlabor 2. To watch Patlabor 2 it is recommended that you watch The early days ova and then Patlabor the movie. As for dark, slow, moody, anime films with an artsy side I'd go with Night on the Galactic Railroad. Also check out some of the short film compilations that Otomo has worked on. I'd most recommend Manie Manie(Neo Tokyo). You should also Give Memories and Robot Carnival a shot. Memories is often considered the best, but i feel that Manie Manie is the closest to Angel's Egg. As for A E S T H E T E T I C S, try out Gosenzosama Banbanzai! A short ova by Oshii. 1001 nights if you dig Amano's art style.

Ooh! thanks for the suggestions, looks like ive got quite a few to go through (only seen GitS form the ones you mentioned)

Also, im not lookign just for 'dark slow moody' stuff, 'bright slow cheerful' is more than fine too - like say some ghibli movies, they have strong artsy aspect to them as well.

(just realised i really like more painterly watercolour backgrounds)

I'd still go with Night on the Galactic Railroad. Gosenzosama Banbanzai! is funny for the most part and it emulates a play. Ghibli movies are great. I like Whisper of the hear out of those the most. Can you give more examples of bright, slow, and cheerful? Have you seen Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise? Everyone should see that. Another A E S T H E T E T I C S anime would be Take the X Train. It's an ova by Rintaro.

>>6068

Dont get me wrong, ill still be checking most (if not all) of those you suggested, eventually.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time would probably fall in that category, since not much happens throughout the whole thing.

And id say Ernest & Celestine, although thats not anime, still one of my favourtie animated films. W A T E R C O L O U R S

 No.6070

>>6069

although The Girl Who Leapt Through lacts the aesthetics and artsy part, maybe its a bad example, what i probably had in mind were just ghibli movies when i said that

 No.6071

I agree with everything above, including:

>Cat Soup

>Galaxy Express 999 movie

>Pale Cocoon

>Haibane Renmei

>Vampire Hunter D

>Inaka Isha

>Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo

Go crazy.

How about Kaguya for a watercolor look? Firetires let me post.

 No.6073

>>6072

Kaguya is the shit! Absolutely love that one (its a ghibli movie, you cant go wrong with that)

If you like that, id highly recomend you checking out Ernest & Celestine, there are just so many similarities artstyle-wise.

I've been meaning too, I'm just really behind on my western animation backlog.

 No.6075

>>6074

Im behind even on my wester animation watch list - as theres pretty much nothing on it right now. And for some reason its really difficult finding 2D western animation, you only hear about the ones that got nominated for an award like Song of the Sea or The Triplets of Belleville.

There must be tons of less know gems that are just hidden due to the lack of buzz, stuff from all sorts of countries that doesent even get english dub.

This isn't anime related, but you might enjoy The Son of the White Mare. This too if you want a painted look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv35MQFeFmc I don't know if non-anime discussion is allowed here. Hotwheels please let me post.

Hope it will be tolerated if we stay contained in this thread.

And thats for the suggestions!

 No.6080

Ping Pong the animation seems to fit your requirements.

Mononoke has an interesting artstyle too but I'm not sure I'd consider its atmosphere to be particularly noteworthy.

In the other hand, Texhnolyze has a great atmosphere but its artstyle can be quite underwhelming in some points of the show.

 No.6081

>>6064

Can't believe no one mentioned anything from SHAFT. Things like Madoka, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and the Monogatari series (watch it in the airin order) are probably something you're looking for. Watch Bakemonogatari for the best experience, if you like it continue watching the monogatari series. Madoka is next on the list and it has great artstyle and atmosphere. You might not like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, but it's definitely worth checking out. I'd post some pics but I'm in a hurry, sorry OP.

 No.6082

Does somebody have high res screencaps/pics from Angels Egg? I cant find mich online. The backgrounds would make awesome wallpapers.

 No.6083

Dead Leaves, Redline, FLCL, Diebuster (watch Gunbuster first), Dragon's Heaven, Paprika. And Kawajiri films too, although the animation is not much stylized they all have a good atmosphere and setting.

Both pics are from Dragon's Heaven.

I also second>>6071 Vampire Hunter D (1985) and >>6080 Ping Pong the animation.

>>6067

OP here, just saw Night on the Galactic Railroad and it was much more than i expected it to be, thanks.

 No.6108

>>6107

Glad I could help. One of the anime I mentioned called Manie Manie has a segment directed by Kawajiri that >>6103 mentioned. If you like that one in particular I'd recommend Cyber City Oedo 808. As for Kawajiri in general, you can never go wrong with Ninja Scroll. Not to mention Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. That's probably my favorite thing by him. It's a shame that the BD release was so poor.

Alrigh, Ill be going through most of these.

>>6103

Whats are the pics from? It reminds me of Moebius.

 No.6113

>>6112

I said it's from Dragon's Heaven.

And it is inspired by Moebius.

 No.6114

>>6113

It also had a lot of inspiration from Miyazaki. Both were good friends. You probably already know this, but it might be of interest to the OP.

 No.6115

>>6114

Yup, theres even a 'Miyazaki Moebius' artbook. Here are the scans:

Thanks man. Always good to see some Moebius. I always enjoy his art. It's like Yoshitaka Amano or Katsuya Terada. They have a very light, dreamlike quality to them.

do you maybe happen to be an artist by any chance?

 No.6118

>>6117

Nope. Why do you ask?

 No.6119

>>6118

dunno, just guessing based on your tastes

 No.6122

Not OP, but I would also to thank you anons for the recommendations.

 No.6125

OP again, Manie Manie - check!

It had an amazing artstyle.

Glad this thread has many more titles to go through!

 No.6138

Jin Roh - check!

The opening riot sequence hit me hard. Cant believe how on poin it is even (if not more) today.

>>6138

Polite sage because I'm not recommending anything.

I'm glad that you're enjoying these. I didn't actually expect you to make this thread when I told you to on /a/. I'm glad you did despite me teasing you.

 No.6157

>>6142
