What are the main differences between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy? I am asking as a former Catholic (Now Asatruar) because I never looked into Orthodoxy.

Go to Continuing Anglican, because it is healthy W.A.S.P identity. You won't like Eastern because it is Slavic and Roman Catholicism because it is too Mediterranean.

If the OP is a Scandinavian (I assume he would be as an Asatruar), then why would he choose especially the Anglo-Saxon church? The Anglo-Saxonic culture is as foreign to the Scandinavian people as the Slavic or the Mediterranean culture.

From what I gather the god of the Abrahamic religions expects us to believe and follow him or receive eternal suffering. So why doesn't he just show himself? Considering he's omnipotent and all he could easily teleport himself in some recognizable form and be like "Hey I'm God follow me or burn in hell". What gives Abrahamics of /rel?

That makes no sense, God should only care about our free choice to love him, not our freedom to believe he exists. After all, how can we make a reasoned and informed choice about whom to love if we can't even figure out who exists?

This also totally fails to explain the misery-inducing flaws in the very design of nature itself, or the suffering of animals, and is entirely invalidated by compatibilist free will. But even if you come up with another excuse to explain away the flaws in nature's design and yet another for the suffering of animals, and illogically adopt a libertarian view of free will, you are still stuck in a quagmire of absurdity. For every argument entails that convincing evidence deprives us of free will. But there are a great many things for which we have convincing evidence. Are we to destroy that evidence, avoid it, so as to stay free? Don't you want convincing evidence before committing yourself to something? To assume we don't, to assume it is ever a good thing to believe a claim on unconvincing evidence, is to take a position on method that is wholly unlivable and inherently absurd, inverting all rationality, and divorcing faith from reason. It would mean that teachers, scientists, lawyers, are routinely committing unspeakable crimes against humanity, depriving everyone of their free will by providing convincing evidence to believe their claims.

There can be no merit in a belief that is held for bad reasons, in a loyalty that is given on uncertain knowledge of to whom you are pledging it, in a trust that is placed in something wholly unproven. And there can be no evil in telling a man what he needs to know to save himself and be happy, and proving to him, like Mr. Scrooge, that it is true. If you believe a man is obliged to prove a claim to you before believing it, then you cannot believe it is in any way wrong for a god to do so. If you believe it is a good thing for a preacher, an apologist, a missionary to give me more evidence and better reasons to believe, then you cannot believe it wrong for a god to do so. Otherwise, missionaries must be villains, and apologetics a wanton violation of man's free will. These are absurd conclusions. Therefore, this defense is absurd.Post too long. >The Religion that is afraid of science dishonours God and commits suicide. It acknowledges that it is not equal to the whole of truth, that it legislates, tyrannizes over a village of God's empires but is not the immutable universal law. Every influx of atheism, of skepticism is thus made useful as a mercury pill assaulting and removing a diseased religion and making way for truth.

In how many churches, by how many prophets, tell me, is man made sensible that he is an infinite Soul; that the earth and heavens are passing into his mind; that he is drinking forever the soul of God?

>Character is higher than intellect…A great soul will be strong to live, as well as strong to think.

Explore, and explore, and explore. Be neither chided nor flattered out of your position of perpetual inquiry. Neither dogmatise yourself, nor accept another's dogmatism. Why should you renounce your right to traverse the star-lit deserts of truth, for the premature comforts of an acre, house, and barn? Truth also has its roof, and bed, and board. Make yourself necessary to the world, and mankind will give you bread, and if not store of it, yet such as shall not take away your property in all men's possessions, in all men's affections, in art, in nature, and in hope.

>Thought is all light, and publishes itself to the universe. It will speak, though you were dumb, by its own miraculous organ. It will flow out of your actions, your manners, and your face. It will bring you friendships. It will impledge you to truth by the love and expectation of generous minds. By virtue of the laws of that Nature, which is one and perfect, it shall yield every sincere good that is in the soul, to the scholar beloved of earth and heaven.

>>>/esperanto/ here, bringing you Oomoto (Esperanto was adopted by Oomoto in 1923 and practitioners often study it):

http://www.oomoto.or.jp/English/enFaq/indexfaq.html

>Oomoto is a Sectarian Shinto sect and one of Japan’s “New Religions.” (Sometimes it is spelled Omoto and also referred to as Omotokyo.)

>Since the middle of the nineteenth century, hundreds of religious sects, many based on Shinto and some on Buddhism, were founded. Several dozen still exist, a few of them large and thriving. Although Oomoto is not the largest, it is often cited as one of the more influential New Religions for many reasons: it gave birth to several other sects, which spun off from it amicably in most cases; it was an early proponent of interfaith cooperation, which today is widely practiced by Japanese religions; and it had a highly public and sometimes tragic history in its first fifty years.

>Oomoto has no professional priests. Some of the paid workers spend much or most of their time engaged in priest duties at the two headquarters. But in Oomoto anyone can become a priest. Men, women, and children are all eligible to study the doctrine and ritual, and to become certified to practice. Many adult priests started out by learning the ritual in their home shrines, where each family has a monthly service. Most branches have several followers who serve voluntarily for priestly duties at monthly services, weddings, funerals, and other rites.

Another big one for Esperanto speakers is Bahá'í Faith

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bah%C3%A1%27%C3%AD_Faith

>Bahá'í notions of progressive religious revelation result in their accepting the validity of the well known religions of the world, whose founders and central figures are seen as Manifestations of God. Religious history is interpreted as a series of dispensations, where each manifestation brings a somewhat broader and more advanced revelation that is rendered as a text of scripture and passed on through history with greater or lesser reliability but at least true in substance,[20] suited for the time and place in which it was expressed.[21] Specific religious social teachings (for example, the direction of prayer, or dietary restrictions) may be revoked by a subsequent manifestation so that a more appropriate requirement for the time and place may be established. Conversely, certain general principles (for example, neighbourliness, or charity) are seen to be universal and consistent. In Bahá'í belief, this process of progressive revelation will not end; however, it is believed to be cyclical. Bahá'ís do not expect a new manifestation of God to appear within 1000 years of Bahá'u'lláh's revelation.

>The independent search after truth, unfettered by superstition or tradition; the oneness of the entire human race, the pivotal principle and fundamental doctrine of the Faith; the basic unity of all religions; the condemnation of all forms of prejudice, whether religious, racial, class or national; the harmony which must exist between religion and science; the equality of men and women, the two wings on which the bird of human kind is able to soar; the introduction of compulsory education; the adoption of a universal auxiliary language; the abolition of the extremes of wealth and poverty; the institution of a world tribunal for the adjudication of disputes between nations; the exaltation of work, performed in the spirit of service, to the rank of worship; the glorification of justice as the ruling principle in human society, and of religion as a bulwark for the protection of all peoples and nations; and the establishment of a permanent and universal peace as the supreme goal of all mankind—these stand out as the essential elements [which Bahá'u'lláh proclaimed].

Try meditating, especially in Nature. Read Scripture until something in there resonates for you – and something will. Have an open heart and open mind when seeking God, and you will surely find Him.

Hello everyone

I have something I'd like to share with you all, not just for myself, but also for you guys. Hopefully someone will get something out of this.

I'll begin this by telling something about myself. I am a 22 year old male, and I have since the age of 17 been a buddhist of the rinzai zen sect. Pretty much my whole life I have been looking for some kind of meaning, something I can do.. Normal jobs don't appeal much to me, just working, getting a loan to buy a house and basically ending up as a slave just to live out a "normal" life seems all so pointless to me.

It was around the age of 19 I started thinking to myself that I could get something meaninful out of my life by going down the road of buddhism. But how could I do this seriously? If I were to tell someone I want to become a monk, then I would most certainly get laughed at just like every other teenager thinking the same.

Then, about a year ago I came up with something I could do, something to prove how serious I am taking this. It isn't just something I'm doing to prove something for everyone else, but it is also something that will help me grow as a person, and most importanly as a buddhist. I am talking about an old school pilgrimage.

For every passing week since I started to think about it, my will to do it has only grown stronger with each passing day, and not long ago I made up my mind to stop thinking about it, and just do it. I still have a lot of planning left do to, so the departure is still a good 6 months away I'd say. At the very least.

Some basic details about the trip:
I want to "cheat" a bit and start around germany (I'm Scandinavian) and have it end in Japan.

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Since I'm planning on doing most of the trip by foot I would most likely end up having to go through Syria/Lebanon to get to Israel from Turkey. That's where my only issue lies with going to Jerusalem.

I'm still quite a bit away from finishing up my plans, so I will look into alternative ways of getting there. But if flying is my only option I will most likely drop it, for now atleast.

And thanks :)

Just thought I'd let everyone know that it will most likely be a little while until any good updates arrive now.

I've just barely started working on different holy sites around europe I want to visit, and after that I'll map out the whole route. I'm doing all this while I'm working on moving back home to live with my brother, so I can save up a bit extra money. (And not having to worry about leaving everything behind and causing a mess for the people I'm currently renting from)

But yeah, I'll probably post back in a few weeks with something substantial, instead of small updates just spamming this board.

Got me there m8, how am I going to keep on living with this out there.

Things are progressing nicely aswell, and a lot faster than I originally planned. Instead of this summer, or a few months, I will be leaving in about one month. Give/take a few days.

I have gotten a lot of basic equipment like a backpack, small tent, sleeping bag/mat to lie on and some clothes. Plus a few other basic things to keep with me.

I also won't plan every last thing about the trip anymore. I feel like it kinda ruins the point of the whole thing. Instead I'll start it by flying to Hamburg, and going on from there. How long I am going to stay in different cities/countries will depend alot on what I'm feeling like.

And when I'm done with europe I will head to india, and go a lot deeper into buddhism in general and hopefully stay at a few different temples before moving on to China to do the same. The end goal is still ending up in Japan if I get that far, and staying there for however long is needed.

I just want to mention that I am really bad at taking what I have in my head and putting it into words without making myself sound like a retard. Which I noticed pretty well when I read through some of my earlier posts. But it is what it is and I'll just keep it retarded, rather than changing it.

As a last note I've been thinking about posting a picture of myself before/when I leave. But I'm not sure yet.

Continuing these posts seem rather pointless at this time, so I will end this with saying my departure will start at 0800 on wednesday.

I also have to admit my heart skips a beat everytime I think about how close it is and the reality of it all. But at this point I am determined to go all the way.

With that said I won't make any new updates here, but I do keep checking in. So if anything is posted I will most likely reply.

I'm nominally Catholic, but I get better paying music gigs in Protestant churches and in practice I tend to act like an ontological naturalist. I like the cultural continuity and significance and the dramaturgy of most kinds of high church Christianity, and even if all belief in God were to extinguish I would still like to see the religion continue for that reason.

Honestly, I'm probably not that different from >>532 in most respects.

Hey guys,

Since the board fell to inactivity, I've decided to claim it and see if we can get this rolling again.

Lets not fool each other, the vast majority of us are from /pol/, so I've named the board aptly to reflect that and make us feel at home. This is a great opportunity for us to talk about religion without the constant incursion of fedoras of all kinds.

Current rules are simple - follow the global rule and be nice to each other. This board is not for Christians only, but since we'll probably be the majority, expect discussions to be swayed that way.

If you want to volunteer keeping the board clean or have any suggestions, email me at rel@8chan.co
