Given the tone of the rest of the board I get a strong feeling that Catholics are going to win out here, or at least form a plurality in the end, with Orthodox and/or Protestants coming in second.
Of course this might just be my impression as a Catholic who is responsible for almost half of the posts on this board.

Irish Catholic here. Thinking about getting back into it. In my late 30's and worrying about the afterlife even though I have a long way till death. But anything can happen and I want to be at peace when I die with no worries.
Any good books to read that will quell any worry's I have about the bible not being true etc..?
I have no doubt that there is a creator/god but am not convinced about Jesus atm and would like to be. I'll be going to midnight mass most likely though for Christmas.

>>502Interesting topic that.
I was raised semi-Protestant and went to a Catholic school all through high school, so seemingly inevitably I became an atheist along the way. High school opened my eyes to a lot of new religions (did a lot of travelling with a team across the country) and met a lot of non-orthodox Jews, sort of interested.
For no apparent reason started reading up on it beginning of senior year and it stuck, mostly the law and scholarly aspects drew me in I guess. Halfway through a conservative conversion right now.

>>503Interesting, I am glad that some people bother to investigate another sphere of physiology. However it must be said no other Religion will satisfy inquiry like Catholicism.
It's rigorous philosophy and truthseeking nature will appeal to those who seek the truth. Please do read the encyclicals and other magisterial material if you are into scholarly aspects of philosophy and do in fact remember the Church was the funding and source of science for a long time.

I'm Roman Catholic on paper, but I've come to believe in what I guess is most accurately described as nihilistic Taoism.
If there are deities, they show no determinable interest in us. How our reality came to be is probably not distinguishable from within. Morality, religion and belief in deities are made from humans alone. There is no objectively right thing to do. However, I find solace in existing. To me, existence is preferrable to non-existence; if only because it is the only thing I've ever experienced. I believe that things just run their course and I, as an individual, am part of that. That's basically the Tao, things happening for whatever reason. I also like how the Tao does not differentiate between good or evil, because there is neither.
So I guess I'm not a real nihilist, because I still take joy in existing and I don't believe it's all entirely for nothing - I simply can't say if it is. And I'm not a real Taoist, because I doubt too many things and I don't put my faith in the Tao fully. There is moments where you have to interfere, but one might argue that's happening in accordance with the Tao anyway.

>>265>tfw you can't pick more than oneI'm nominally Catholic, but I get better paying music gigs in Protestant churches and in practice I tend to act like an ontological naturalist. I like the cultural continuity and significance and the dramaturgy of most kinds of high church Christianity, and even if all belief in God were to extinguish I would still like to see the religion continue for that reason.
Honestly, I'm probably not that different from
>>532 in most respects.
