Why is the West so atheistic while Eastern Europe is so devout?

Even in the United States, with the Bible Belt, we don't bless our weapons and give praises to the Lord while we fight. What went wrong with the West?

This.

Soviet Communism served the ironic function of protecting Eastern Europe from western secularism and engendering public antipathy towards militant atheism.

The Bible Belt is overwhelmingly Protestant, and so they might see rituals like blessing or anointing persons and objects as superfluous or blasphemous.

I can see that.

We view Christianity more as a personal thing (you and Christ), where as the Orthodox and Catholic view it more as a hierarchy, where you have to go through a Priest or some Church official.

My Protestant denomination actually leans more toward the latter, since it derives from the Anglican Church, though it claims to not view tradition as important but mere symbolism for what Christ has done for us. It's almost a mixture of Church hierarchy and personal relationship with God.

Still, I have been drawn more and more toward Orthodoxy for the way their soldiers act in battle and the ceremonies and traditions of the Church.

>What do you fear?

>I only fear God.

It's almost like a IRL version of the Imperium from 40k.
