These are the results of the last badge survey. It's not definitive or anything, but it shows what people liked and didn't like about badge submissions at the time. To quote AWC:
>the results are deeep but it *appears* that Q12-13. Q-16-17, and Q31-32 all have quite a lot of favor. Q12-13 has the highest rated individual badges. (the dark and bug gym badges specifically)
>circle is the most preferred shape. utilize this information in your future badge designs or revisions.

31-32 are my favorite
could give out the badges as wedge shapes, like the artist depicted, or we could have a the wedges/larger circle be a badge case, and have just the inner circles awarded as badges
cc35b4 No.2712
>>2707
I don't really like any of these. The ones I dislike the least are 10-11, 24-25, and 31-32.
I also don't care if the badges interlock or not or are circular or whatever, I just care that the badge designs themselves are good.
For those of you that do care, I think it's important to note that we can still have a circular key that the badges go into without the badges actually being shaped like that. For instances, the badges themselves could be like the first few sets in that image, but the badge case/menu where you have them in game could have slots that make a disc, and the badges placed into those could act as a key.
31-32 could very much be that as each badge is clearly merely a circular piece in the center of each arc.

imo we should just go forward with 31-32. shit looks great.

31-32 seems to be the cool kid in town. Its my favourite out of the options, but I think some of the individual badges could use some work. Sword one in particular doesnt do a good job showing its buggyness as much as it shows the gym leaders a weaboo.

Q12-13 are my faves (Not a fan of the Psy-Fi and GraGho badges though), but I am still open to new designs/modifications.
For example, Q12/13 looks a big flat, and could do with some metallic/chrome borders or details like the ORAS. badges. (Pic related).
I also like the shapes in Q14 - 15, but that's me.

Nobody told me we had a badge thread. I posted these a long time ago. People seemed to like them, but there were a few that hated them.
Remember that these are just supposed to be rough shapes, they're far from final.
33b902 No.2946

I had also started on this a while ago which is supposed to be an ouroboros instead of just a circle.
I got stuck trying to think of badges for each gym that were a bit more elongated. (btw that those two that look like Quetzar's head are actual badges made to look like that.)

I like them, in my opinion, the circle doesn't have to be a perfect circle, so you could try tweaking it here and there to get better badges.
c3586c No.2956

I like these because they can be put in a badge case that isn't a circle, and it's not immediately obvious they're interlocking. Then the badge gate can have them interlock.

Agree with this, though they would need to be simpler for spriteability
>>2707
IMHO opinion 16-17 is the best due to how good the colours and design of the badges work in tandem with each other. The other badges should take from that, especially the vibrant colours.
31-32 is nice, but a too obvious circle and maybe also too dark/brown, we ain't making a "next gen" game here
Also testing new trip since I forgot mine

Most of the lore behind Quetz or any other legendaries being known by the Urobos people is still unconfirmed, so I'd refrain from obvious references to Quetz in our art just now
Regardless, that thing's nice. Things like that might make the game too esoteric though, since Ouroboros and all that.

I've had this idea ever since people mentioned VS portraits in the hole in the center of the badge circle. I can't even hope to sprite this in less than 2 months of trial and error though, so I figured I'd just draw it and leave it here.

suggestion ^u^
details:
- Ice Badge – tried shaping it in the form of a flower named "Glory of the snow". probably gonna be hard to sprite if ever
- Steel Badge – Two Pickaxes and an upside down hammer. yay creativity
- Water badge – shaped in a front view boat
- Dark badge – weird looking devil jester creature. yellow because if i used darkish purple the wreath would look bland-ish. besides, the dark can be associated to yellow lights in the night city
- Fire badge – yeah
- Psy/Fi Badge – an orange fist/arm on the right, clasped/empowered by awesome psychic swirly powerz
- Bug Badge – tried shaping it into Cahokisect and probably failed
- Grass/Ghost Badge – when tilted such that it is like it is on the wreath, it depicts greenery growing out of a mound of dirt with a face made of dots; it depicts the rebirth phase of the life cycle.
As for the wreath, the best i could do to make it look like an ouroboros was through the water, grass/ghost and dark badge. on closer inspection, it shows the head through the water and grass badges, with the hole as the eye, and the darker parts of the dark badge gives contrast to the thinning effect of what seems to be the tail (that looks like it vanishes into the other hole)

I adore the Ice, Steel and Water badges. I like the Bug and PsyFi badge as well.
Whilst I get why you made the Dark badge yellow, I don't think it suits it. In addition, the GraGho badge and Fire badges look… uninspired, for lack of a better word.

Revised version:
Fire badge - redesigned to be fireworks
GraGho badge - redesigned to look like a partly sideways skull with some greenery (inspired by brigand's version of the GraGho badge)
Dark badge - now dark purple

These look fucking awesome but the dark type badge needs work. I'd have no idea what it's supposed to be without you telling me. Maybe try redesigning it to look like a circus tent or something card-related like a spade, right now it doesn't really tie into the gym's theme. Dark Type is pretty hard to personify in a symbol but going with the gym's theme would make it easier.
Also requesting the water type badge be a sub instead of a boat, since Cameron is a diver and his gym is underwater. Should be a minor change.
Also you could try shaping the Steel badge like an anvil if its current shape displeases you.
82f3fa No.3392
>>3391
hmm, making the dark badge into a circus tent seems too simple, and it would have the same shape as the water one which is right next to it, making it easier to tell they're puzzle pieces.
what do you think about changing the current one's head into a circus clown? cuz u know, clowns are the personification of all things dark and evil? or maybe a harlequin … though theyre practically similar

they are beautiful and quasi abstract. the negative space they make (circles) it fantastic as well.

I like the top Dark badge very much. Also I prefer the old flower on the GraGho badge, it looks more like a flower and less like some sort of gemstone because of the circle in the middle. I also think the bug-type badge could use a second color.

I can see absolutely no faults with this. Every single one of these badges is great. I'd vote for these in a heartbeat.
I agree with Requestee, the top dark badge is the better of the three variants. I also prefer the flower for the Grass/Ghost badge.
Would there be a possibility to introduce a few more varied colours into the designs? Just a few highlights, nothing extravagant.

>too much going on, too busy
>nah, as a concept it works
>you need to tone the voltage on the details of the badges like
>waaaay the fuck down
>and find some way to make them easy to differentiate
>visually, from each other
>picking each badge out is like a finding waldo thing
>I'd say to keep the overall concept
>you can still work with that
>but the badges need to be toned a bit down
>another choice
>the easy way
>is that when you're seeing them in the menu, you can cycle through them and the badges get highlighted individually
>that would solve that
>you'd still need to have them separate from each other
>when you go to select them
>in your badge case or whatever
>select the badge case
>get badges
>select that
>start with the first badge, all other badges are darkened
>cycle though
>each badge gets highlighted individually

While the badge designs are great individually, the mini-rings between each badge defeats the purpose of having the badges in a ring.
It takes out elements of having the badges interlinked with a massive circle each time. I get the appeal of having some of the badges be a similar shape to their "opposite", but I personally don't like it.

ROUTE TO THE BADGES FINALIZATION!
So Badges are going to be finalized!
You have two months from today to submit all Badge sets!
Submit your badges in sets of 8. What does that mean? When you submit your 8 badges, you will submit one badge for each gym. So each set has all 8 gym badges! We will vote on badges by set to maintain style and synergy between designs.
If you see something you like with another artist, collaborate with them and make a set that works! But we won't be voting on individual badges because as of now, we are still in the air with regards to how we will have our badge case/trainer card/key thing work.
So rather than argue with one another over deeply rooted personal beliefs, let's respect that we have different desires for circles or no circles and submit what we submit as is. If you submit an interlocking wheel, specify that you are submitting this set as an interlocking wheel. If you are submitting these badges for separate use in some other capacity, specify that. We are not embolden to follow what you say as rule of cool prevails, but I'd like to think we would honor what wins.
There will be a week of feedback taking and interacting with the final, submitted designs before voting happens, but try to remember the early days of sage when people took feedback when designing badges before submitting them and submitted what the people liked by working with the people in the first place :).
If you submit 50 variations of the same badges with the tiniest of changes, it is legal, but people will laugh at you and make fun of you and it will be voted on.
With regards to specifics, with respect to the potential for our badges being on the trainer card, all badge sprites must be 32x32, so keep that in mind when designing your badges! http://pokemonessentials.wikia.com/wiki/Trainer_card
To make things easy for us, I whipped up a quick Strawpoll
http://strawpoll.me/5549262
to get an idea of what the current vox populi is towards our badges and what the desire is for their use. Pretty self-explanatory, but fill it out and we'll see where it goes from there :).
With regards to names, keep names in mind when making your badges and when you see other badges. When we get to the final round of badge design surveys, we will collect names for badges and get the name surveys rolling from there! Don't post them, however, until we get closer to the design submission deadline.
This isn't going to be rocket science guys, just have fun making badges and remember to submit badges!
Deadline is officially, 11/21 November 21st, 2015 A.D. at 12 Noon (UTC-6).
That's 1PM EST, 11AM CMT, 10AM PST, and 18:00 Greenwich Mean Time.
Any questions, just post em here and happy badge making!

When we said we (I, brigand, mage, and others) wanted a feedback period, we meant a feedback survey. IE: After the 21st, a survey would be made with all submissions, where people leave detailed feedback in the survey, then once the results from that are done, people would get another week or two to tweak the designs before the actual voting.
Also, almost tall of our deadlines use midnight at EST as the cutoff, I would appreciate it if you could do the same here. Lastly, will existing badge designs that are mad be automatically included, or just they be re-submitted?

As for how these could be changed, I wouldn't do much other than try to make sure thy had a unifying theme other than the circular combination. Unnova had each badge long and slender, with some having embedded gems all deltora quest-ey. Sinnoh badges were all backed with silver in a similar way. Gen I and II all had small symmetrical (sans two) badges. Hoenn and Kalos badges were all shit.
I personally like the percious stone idea, or maybe use of gold throughout the badges to connect them all and tie them to the flavour of the region.

I'd change the colors too. They're all super bright and it takes away from the concepts of them. The gold looks good, but I'd probably use some darker colors for the interiors.
My only but would be that the gragho looks weird being colored all green. If you made the skull an amethyst or other purplish gemstone that'd probably achieve the design you're going for.

Why not a "shine" effect like the badges in gen 4? When you "highlight" the badge, a gold shimmer passes over it (a thin "line" of the black turns to gold and travels over it). It'd just be an animated gif.

- Cruise Badge/Depth Badge

- Rebirth Badge/Renewal Badge/Cycle Badge/Life Badge

If we are keeping the pattern (two badges share the same outline with subtle differences and a different orientation) I tried to do something with the psy/fi badge that share the same outline as the Steel badge.
If we do use this badge set, and the pattern does continue, do we do something with the Water or Bug badges (flip/turn it around. It'd be easier to do with the bug one TBA.)

ok, gonna be posting a set of badges here.
pretty much all of them could use improvement, so feel free to give feedback or just totally take individual ideas and use them in your own sets
ice: you're looking at a hill with a snowball rolling down it towards you. snow = ice, snowball getting bigger = growth
steel: this is a bucket of molten steel like you'd see in a forge. it's pouring out molten steel towards you. the background image is a gear for industry i guess?
water: this is a research submarine head-on. outer edge is metal, inner would be glass. i've included a reference image for this
dark: lazy as shit and i really dislike it, but i need to include something since we have to submit full sets. it's a top hat inside of a ring since shadini is wearing a top hat and is a ring leader

second half of this set
psyfi: it's half a target (physical training) and half a mandala (meditation/mental training)
fire: it's 3 fireworks exploding, and the background is a dark color for the night sky
bug: a crossed katana (bug samurai) and basilect horn. background is a net for bug catching
gragho: half a skull, half a flower

If it is not in a set of 8, it won't be surveyed. I want that to be clear, you can submit an image with a different badge and that's ok, but keep in mind that doing what you're doing will not have it counted and in November I don't want to hear you bitching about your options being left out.

All of them are pretty good. The style of them when drawn will make or break it (remember, big bold shapes).
LOVE the psy-fi badge without having to hammer in the ?! theme of the gym leaders.
Dark could also be the hat turned upside down with something coming out of it.
The bug one doesn't need the samurai theme. It could just be the net, maybe with a beetle horn or bug mandible tearing through part of it.
The GraGho one could look better when styalized. You could even do a Flower with a skull patten in the center (or a skull with petals around it)
>>5822
I like these a lot too, this is what I meant when I said earlier about badges being made up of big, bold shapes. The top Ice badge and the far left PsyFi badge are the best IMO. Despite what I said earlier, this PsyFi badge uses the ?! theme perfectly, mixing it with the ying/yang theme.
The GraGho is interesting, but the holes in the leaf need to look more like a skull or spooky face IMO. Unless that's not what you were going for?
>>5816
So here: >>5789 I need to make a different image for each combination of each change? So that's:
- GraGho badge being flipped
- Alternate Water badge made by Slug. (since he hasn't done it the way that's allowed)
- Alternate water badge by Slug altered by me
- First alternate PsyFi badge
- Second alternate psyfi badge
That's (5 x 5 =) 25 different combinations.
I just want to check before I make them; is this acceptable? Or would I be "overloading" the survey with too many options?

I'm replacing Dunky running the badge surveys so there are a few slight changes to the rules to give some freedom to edit the badge submissions, but still try and keep enough of a lid on them that we don't end up with way to much for any normal person to decide between.
So for example, while people are still required to submit 8 badges at a time, people, (including the artist), are allowed to suggest edits for the badges. Don't go overboard though. I don't want more than 3 variations on a badge per person.
Its also important that when making edits, you make sure that the edits still fit together! Its no good if they don't.
They have to follow the same style as the other badges in the set to avoid any frankensteining of designs.
While voting, people will vote on their favorite sets and their favorite badge variations separately and people will vote on names separately after the design survey.
An external voting calculator will be used to count the votes and give winners. because the calculator is really fancy, you can make abnormal votes like A>B=C.
In the event of ties, 1 runoff will be done.
Just post any questions here or in skype. I'm sure I've left a hole somewhere in this plan.

i think regardless of whether or not edits are allowed during the submission/survey process, we should still have a minor changes process after the badges have been chosen in the same way we have for all our other designs
stay with me here though
instead of charging through and doing badges then minor changes immediately after once people have inevitably grown tired of badges, let's wait
pick badges, pick names, put them in demo 2.0, and then come back to them and do minor changes in a few months so that people actually care about them

Your suggestion is compelling. It will give people a chance to detox from all the heated badge debates before returning to the topic. It might be a good idea just to get a variation in place to begin with though, so instead of just changing my plan for badges now, we can just add minor changes later.

So I finally got around to completing the idea I had here >>2946
As to what was said here >>2963 you can think of it that most people don't think Quetz however its image is used in the culture that people just assume is just a generic serpent and not an actual pokemon. Kind of like the dragon statues in Drayden's gyms and Drasna's room are supposed to be generic dragons. The order can be tweaked, but Psi/fi, Bug, Dark, and Fire badge kind of need to stay where they are unless they change shape.
Anyways the idea was to actually incorporate an ouroboros instead of just a circle with the serpent resembling Quetzar (yes, there seem to be winges ouroboroses).
The badges would be
Slope Badge: Carson's idea. It's a snowball rolling down a hill getting bigger as it goes representing the start of your journey.
Forge Badge: Pretty self explanitory
Depth Badge: It's a sub, but I don't know if it's a bit too simplistic.
Curtain Badge: Tried ti find something that fit both circus and dark theme. Curtains are a staple of circuses, but they also obscure and hide things.
Duality Badge: Combination of a ! and ?. They make a pretty good Quetzar head combined together. ! and ? can sometimes be used upsidown as well, but the ouroboros might have to be flipped the other way if we don't want to have the badges flipped themselves.
Rocket Badge: Again pretty self explanitory, but the fire is supposed to be shaped like Quetzar's tail with the red part being the jewel.
Pincer Badge: Same as Forge and Rocket
Cycle/Infinity Badge: Dunky's idea where a vine creates an infinity sign to represent the continuous cycle of life and death. It also goes from living to withered.

That is a thing of real beauty
But it actually bothers me quite a bit that they aren't arranged in proper order.

individually:
Slope - really great interpretation of that concept, awesome
Forge - i like the design itself but i think the other steel proposals have done a better job of showing that it's a steel gym
Depth - i like the concept of a sub, but i do think it's too simplistic. i think the curviness of the lines has a lot to do with it. it looks like the outline of a fish colored like a sub instead of like a sub, if that makes sense?
Curtain - very nice. does a good job with the theme, seems like something gf would do for a similar gym, isn't too reliant on the circus theme
Duality- i don't really care for this one. i think it works well as a shape for quetzar's head, but as a standalone badge, it doesn't have a lot of pizzazz
Rocket - clean, simple, to the point. i like it
Pincer - see Rocket
Cycle/Infinity - i like the idea of an infinity vine that is both living and withered, but i don't feel like it's clear enough that the half of the vine is supposed to be dead
in general, i'm not that into the quetzar shape here. i don't like how the badges are all in different orientations, and i think the wing part looks sort of out of place. i prefer all of these as individual badges over a joined image
75cd67 No.5911
>>5822
Ice - i like the top one a lot. is the bottom one supposed to be a toboggan? the wiggly shape makes that unclear
Steel - seems a bit too plain. what would the background be on this?
Water - i love it. looks really cool
Dark - i'm unsure what i'm looking at here. it seems like a hat with something coming out of it? i'm hesitant to use a hat motif in the dark badges (even though i did it myself) because i think, even though shadini does wear a hat, that says "magic" which is distinct from "circus"
Fire - this is the best "it's an explosion" submission in this thread
Psyfi - i prefer the yin yang version, i like how that one is something as opposed to just the ?!
Bug - really great, probably the best one in this set
GraGho - would this be half dead/half alive? i think that could work, but i'm not very clear on what it is right now

(this isnt a submission, just a WIP, posting to get feedback/ suggestions if anyone thinks its viable)
reading all the new badge suggestions, i made a rough sketch of a new batch that doesnt interlock using some that i found appealing. i decided to make them simple. as of now the psy/fi is very WIP. other WIP-ish are water, bug, fire-ish, and dark. if you wanna collaborate on it or simply suggest stuff, that would be cool.
here are what i thought of some of them:
Ice - i used carson's concept of the snowball rolling down a mountain, representing growth, but in front view like sketcher's. but i made it to look more like a simple symbol. i could probably put the mountain peak snow cap for a bit more detail
Steel - i used a slightly different version of my old steel badge, it represents substance and foundation (seeing as they are pillars) that send the message "how you build yourself (pillar structure/ general shape) depends on the tools/talents/skills (represented by the upside down hammer + 2 pickaxes) you and your attitude while in constant trial/heat/pressure (substance/steel)"
water - submersible representing journey and discovery by diving in the deepest depths
dark - does this look too simple? i made it using two interlocking question marks representing the unknown/surprises waiting in the darkness. its general form (kinda looks like googles… ) is intended to look like a mask, representing the shade or power of concealment
fire - fireworks supposedly
psy/fi - supposedly harmony/heart with the !? but it looks pretty shit, i know, very wip. i kinda like carson's concept of mandala+target but a mandala is kinda too detailed to implement imo
bug - beetle about to take flight, also in the form of a shogun helmet. represents the adamant will (carapace) of the samurai as well as the willingness to progress and go beyond the challenges in life (about to take flight)
gra/gho - skull flower, yeah, life/death biz, theme of the gym and all. does it look too simple?
also included a variation of the sub above the set. also i intend to use the suggested gold outline thing on these. all in all i tried to make them all symmetrical either bilaterally or rotationally

Really good! Close to official badges.
The steel badge is kinda close to the Mine badge from D/P/Plt, but that might be me.
The dark badge is VERY close in design to the balance badge.
And yes, the Gra/Gho badge is a bit simple, but the concept is sound (a plant with a skull/spooky face)

ice - fantastic
steel - i like it as a steel badge, but the thing that seems off to me is that it has such an emphasis on pickaxes, which aren't used in forges at all
water - i prefer the version up top (looks more like a research sub to me), but both are fantastic
dark - i'm gonna reserve judgement because i'd need to see it colored i think. i like the concept of it looking like a mask, maybe you can put a little more emphasis on the mask element to make it more distinct from the balance badge?
fire - ii think this could be improved by using more straight and angular lines as opposed to smooth, curving ones. it kind of looks like bedazzled right now
psyfi - looks awesome, i think slug's concerns about similarity to the soul badge will be mitigated by color
bug - great
grass/ghost - i like the simplicity of this one, and the fact that the shape seems very badge-like. i can't think of anything to add that would improve it.
overall fantastic work, would def vote for these

Ice - Fantastic. Great idea, I love how it works as a rolling snowball, a snowman AND a mountain.
Steel - Also great.
Water - I like the simplicity of it. I needed a few moments to see the submarine, but once I did it really clicked.
Dark - Needs work. The question mark motif is already used for PsyFi, and using it more than once is not a good idea. I liked the idea of a mask or a clown. Maybe work off of a Venitian carnival mask or something.
Fire - I like the blooming flame idea, but it needs more pop. Add straighter lines, more pointed shapes, to really give it that feeling of an explosion happening.
PsyFi - I like it. Very creative, and it works well visually.
Bug - Best Bug badge so far. Bug has so far been obscenely hard to make badges for, but I like the idea of a kabuto helmet combined with a beetle's carapace.
GraGho - Needs work. It's a little to light, in my opinion. Maybe make it a little bit more morbid, for instance by making the plant aspect more of an overgrowth rather than a happy little flower.

I can't really accept the dark badge. When people play the game, that's what they will see. They wont see it as interlocking question marks. they'll just see the balance badge.
The others are generally good though. The bug helmet is the best bug idea we've had imo.
e57b79 No.6051
I'm afraid I succumbed and drew these. They're not intended to be a submission straight away, so don't complain that there's four of one badge.
I like the Sinnoh style (metallic badges with coloured blocks and trim), so that's what these are. Colours aren't included, but I think anyone with half a brain could figure it out. Gold trim was proposed above, and that's cool. The designs are generally quite simple, and can better show off the metallic effects (if we have large badges) as well as being perfectly drawable even if they end up being tiny on the trainer card.
These badges were designed separately, and do not (naturally) interlock. I'm not keen on the interlocking idea, because I feel it detracts from the design of the individual badges.
Ice: Snowball getting bigger. Angled to make it look like it's rolling downhill. The lefthand one (bigger in front of smaller) would be more appropriate, I suppose, although I find the other one more aesthetically pleasing..
Steel: Ingot piles. The righthand one (2x3 stack) is more realistic (if you care, and why would you?), plus it mimics the layout of the player's party screen which, I dunno, is something maybe. Yes, those are holes in the 2x3 stack badge between the ingots, not separate blocks of colour - they could just be all trim instead if people prefer.
Water: They're based on diving helmets. I really didn't want it to be blatantly a piece of equipment (and certainly not a submarine), so I prefer the lefthand one for being a little more abstract. It also kinda looks like a net, which is related to water. Generally, though, I didn't have any ideas for this one.
Dark: Juggling balls. Dark juggling balls. Shadow Balls, perhaps? I prefer the one on the right.
e57b79 No.6052
>>6051
Psychic/Fighting: I didn't want to go for the "just a ?!" thing, but I ended up using that as a starting point anyway. Partly these designs also come from me reading the leader descriptions, which mention "more straightforward" and "sophisticated daydreamer", and I got "straight and twisty" out of it. I suppose the two lines being twisted together represents the union of both the physical and the spiritual, or some bollocks like that. It's on it's side because why not? In the designs with separate blocks on the ends, I don't know what colour(s) they would be.
Fire: Bang! Yellow on the inside, red on the outside (with golden trim separating the two, of course). Very much inspired by Sketcher's design in >>5822, and more symmetrical because I'm more comfortable with geometrical shapes than freeform.
Bug: Again, inspired by Sketcher's badge in the same post. It also looks like those samurai horn hat things, which I only noticed after the initial sketch.
Grass/Ghost: Leaf and ghost. Couldn't be simpler. The lines and eyes/mouth should be trim rather than, well, lines as I've drawn here, because this was the first one I drew and I didn't think that far ahead.

I like them all (though I do have individual faves from other sets. IMO if the badges don't interlock we should be able to pick whatever since they'll all be made into the same style later on).
We could also experiment putting gemstones in the badges? (Ice having an aquamarine in the bottom most snowball, fire having a topaz in the middle, etc).
75cd67 No.6061

ice - bottom snowball needs to be bigger. otherwise, this looks solid to me. perhaps having the shape in the background be a trapezoid instead of a triangle would make it look more hill-like
steel - i like this better than the pickaxes, but something still seems off. is there any good way to incorporate molten steel into the badge since that's what the gym is all about?
water - this is well executed, however the reason i preferred the alt water pictured here >>5999 is because cameron is a researcher, so having a research sub like that would make more sense
dark - i am very put off by the fact that it's the only one in the set that isn't symmetrical. also i'm getting "bat wings" more than "cape," but that may just be the color
psyfi - great work
fire - this is really fantastic. we've been trying and trying for firework but i think going for sun is going to look a lot better, and this is great
bug - perfect
grass/ghost - i'm not feeling this badge at all. i don't think that either the skull or tree shapes are evident enough upon first glance. i don't like how this badge is so, for lack of a better word, flimsy compared to the full, meaty shapes of the rest of the badges. i also think the symbolism is a little off because the tree has bare branches, which doesn't typically connote life.
one way this badge could be improved is by straightening out the bottom instead of having it rounded, which would reinforce the skull teeth better as well as the tree roots

Okay so I spent this afternoon just cleaning up the existing designs. The badges as discussed are based heavily on sinnoh styling; the silver edges. I started experimenting with varying widths of silver border to help with emphasis on certain elements.
I also took one of unanimously well received badges (the PsyFi Badge) and took it through to a fairly polished look.
I'm still listening to feedback at this stage, but unless the points brought up are super clear and valid I would perfer more detailed feedback.

My only suggestion / minor nitpick would be to change the orange on the Water badge to yellow, something like pic related. As it is now 4/8 of those badges use orange which when they're all viewed together like that it's a fact that stands out immediately to me. I think changing those parts to yellow not only makes the badge look better but I think it helps the color diversity a little, especially with yellows only being used by the Fire badge currently.

ice - trapezoid is much better than triangle, but i think the top could afford to be slightly narrower to make the hill seem larger

water - lights are a huge improvement (i prefer yellow over orange). i think this is looking a little busy with the multiple interior rings. i actually prefer slug's edit of water with the solid front color >>6098.
dark - outlining is an improvement, but i'm gonna keep complaining about it being the only asymmetrical badge, and not being obvious what it actually is.
psyfi - flawless
fire - i love this fire badge, but i'm thinking we should include some red in there somewhere. that's like the only color really missing from these badges
bug - i like the jewel, but i don't think the outlining of the jewel should join with the outline below it. there should be a gap below like there is on top (not sure how this will translate in sprite form)

Names.
This comes to me as a particular aspect of the game where we can actually push the theme of cycles that is nearly forgotten from this project save a few points in the plot.
My proposition is this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erikson%27s_stages_of_psychosocial_development
We base some aspects of gym leader dialoge on these 8 stages of psychological development to guide the player's "moral" story (e.g. truth vs ideals from b/w). The names of the stages are nice and vague enough to be used as badge names in order without too much hassle. Pic related.

Still not a fan of the dark badge. It'd try basing it on a jester, or perhaps the masks of Thalia and Melpomene. Maybe it could even be based on a Spade/Club/Diamond since Vivace is known for the casino, Shadini fights based on luck, and his sig is Howlequin. Another idea is to base it on a circus tent, I've seen one with that design before and I liked it. Also that means we can name it the Big Top Badge which just sounds so good.
Yeah, I do think the fire one is too busy. >>6058 is much better imo.

my single biggest problem is still dark though. i'll try to do some more brainstorming on that, but i'm going to continue harping on the fact that it's the only asymmetrical badge, so we should at least find a way to fix that even if we keep this general concept

Okay so my biggest issue with these fire badge designs is the fact that it is based on a circle. In my current set of badges, 2 (fire and water) are loosly based on a circle. Now theoretically if we changed those other two badges it wouldn't be a problem, but my issue with the design extends be on that.
A well designed badge in my opinion involves an abstraction of a thematic element or idea relating each respective gym leader. But it is also a reflection of their ideals and personality.
Long story short, I dont think Stella is a circle. She is stubborn and strong and a more angular sturdy shape reflects these ideals much more prominently.
>>6138
I like this fire badge but it is a tad busy imo.
>>6137
I don't mind the changes to the bottom half, or the colors. But to me this looks more like a barbarian helmet with those horns. The old ones are much closer to representing a samurai helmet.
Anyway, I've read through a lot of ideas and feedback and Ill be making another round of revisions tomorrow.

I think we got a near perfect batch of badges right here.
The new Steel badge is fantastic. Great job.
Whilst I too would prefer the jester mask design for the Dark badge, I don't mind the cape. It's good.
And I REALLY like the Fire badge. It has that "punch" I think other Fire badges lacked. Just simplify a couple of shapes, but keep the main idea intact.

what about something of a similar concept to xen's (gear with a forge in it), but instead it's an anvil with a forge in it? that's more angular but still relevant, although it would likely not be symmetrical, which bugs me a bit

Took a crack at some of the feedback from the weekend.
>Ice
Made the changes to similar to Xenons one in >>6138 but added a larger gap on top.
>Steel
Theres been plenty of valid redesigns so rather than adopting I just kept refining my original concept. Its no longer top heavy. The design emulates an open furnace as well as a heavy metal press.
>Water
Also adopted Xenons one. Solid change.
>Dark
Carson keeps pushing for a symetrical one. Personally I dont think this one is there, but its not that fact that its asymetrical, plenty of badges are. Regardless I changed the colors and I think its a lot better in that regard at least.
>Psyfi
Is solid
>Fire
Xenon has a viable alternate. No point in changing.
>Bug
Moved the diamond up so its no longer touching. Also changed the colors to match >>6137.
>Graghost
Changed the color of the circle. No longer has the middle line like in >>6098
Now I also attempted putting my current designs into 16x16 format. Im not sure what dimentions are needed for the actual game but it was an interesting test to see them at such a small scale. I used Sinnoh badges as reference.

While I prefer the fire badge from >>6138, as you've shown, it'd be a pain in the ass for the small scale sprite. (unless we do a case with a bigger view like in gen 4?)
Also, IMO, I still prefer this >>6138, bar some experimentation with the Steel Badge, using the red bug badge, and maybe making the center of the circle on the GraGho badge purple like you did (but keeping the silver "trunk").
The red dark badge looks too similar a shade to the beetle badge.
I can finally see the steel badge as forge instead of hammers. Maybe make the orange section bigger? Though I do like Xenon's molten cog thing, and experimenting with >>6133

ice - elevated hill top like in >>6178 but kept the color
steel - molten hammer of death. also molten metal being poured out a hexagon/circle bucket thing mounted on two large screw things like the one from >>6133
dark - jester hat with an ace of spade in the middle. concept: shadini awards you a "fool/jester" hat badge for both reasons that he fooled you with his grandeur act/ faking his personality making you a fool, and a reminder that surprises lurk everywhere and must be prepared for the unexpected for we are all fools in the face of the unknown (if that makes any sense).
fire - not satisfied with the recurring sun badge so i made two new variations of the one from my previous post
bug - removed the gem and tried the color scheme albeit less saturated. also tried addressing the "it doesnt look like a bug" issue by adding eyes using the negative/outline
gragho - the one from >>6178 but with green circle

I like the change to Ice.
The steel one could have a circular bucket, but wither way, it runs the risk of looking like a candy wrapper IMO. I like it the best tho.
I preferred the dark cape badge, since the clown doesn't really evoke anything dark.
Out of the two fire badges, I prefer the left one. Maybe keep the yellow "drop shape" from the right though. Made a mock up with a red center. Oy vey, are we happy with the accidental star of david? Why not put a gemstone in there for more sheckles?
Love the new idea with the bug badge, but we could make the eyes a bit bigger with a thin silver boarder (like the thin line down the middle of the badge)?
I prefer the Gra/Gho badge with the accidental tree (silver line under the circle) like in >>6138

Love the new steel, and dark is a good departure. Though I think the bellballs are too small on dark, almost to the point would be better without. And I think it could use one more element, like if it could somehow have pointy teeth somewhere. Too tired to figure out where tho

The crown is much better then the cape, but I do prefer the Red/white/green color scheme, so i'd like to see it with that. I'd like to see even more shapes for it, though.
On a similar note, not fond of the red/salmon scheme for the bug badge. I'd try a dark teal/turquoise/emerald color along with salmon.
I prefer the shapes here >>6133 for steel, but what you have andd what >>6138 has are all way better then what we had before with the anvil/pickage shape
Could you try making a divers helmet badge for water? I think that could be just as good or better then what we have now.
As far as fiire, I prefer the one on the left, I also like the one here: >>6138

When the submission period is over, I'll be collecting all the edits made of badges in this thread for the survey. In the cwith the exception of badges people don't want to submit. However, how is this shade of red compared to the new red Bug Badge?
I think they are different shades so it is OK.
In any case, if we do go with this, out of the two images here >>6201 we'll have to use the Fire Badge on the right. Otherwise we'll have 3 badges with red in them, which might be too much. (or the Fire Badge on the left has the red center changed to another color.)
Just thinking about it, there is a way to make the crown look more "dark".

So, (ignoring the eyes) the teeth don't work because it is lots of small details next to each other.
And then making the teeth larger would muddy it (instead of looking like a crown with teeth, looking like a crown on a bed of triangles).
I'm sure there is a way to make it look more dark-type like. Or maybe just throw on some playing card symbols since gambling vaguely ties to dark types (risk, luck, cheating).

Awesome work on the bug badge, though I wouldn't mind the two colors being a little more different, it's way better then the red/salmon scheme.
For grass/ghost, I have a suggestion to make thee inner circle a ghostly, grayish purple, and making the dark olive a little greener pic related, each right step is slightly more green, personally I thnk the second from right is best.

I am still very concerned with the process, if all the already posted variants are going to be included automatically then it's going to be a clusterfuck of people voting on designs that don't synerigize well.
IMO, you should only survey stuff people specifically go "I am submitting this/these variants for X set", and we should be open to changing how we survey it so to avoid us voting stuff in like 5 badges that all have the same colors and so on. Starting to think that you should only allow people to submit their own sets an variants for badges in their sets, and nothing else.

But if a color scheme gets knocked out initially I would assume it wouldn't be allowed to be resubmitted as a minor change, and there's nothing preventing the problem from occurring during minor changes as well if they happen on a badge by badge case, not as a set.

It took me a minute to figure out what exactly you changed. Its so minute than I wouldn't even bother distinguishing between them. I'd accept a submission for green skull with purple circle for each of the rows, but nothing more.
Your concern for multiple badges being similar colors is valid, but the bug badge is kinda screwed anyway. Either its green, like the grass ghost one, or its red, like 2 of the fire ones or a few of the dark ones.
@ your concerns about the surveying process, rude. Also, whether they are submitted automatically, which they're not, edits are for badges within the same set only. Its up to the voters, not me, to consider how well the badges "synergize" and vote accordingly.
There is nothing stopping people bringing back older color schemes in following surveys. The final results will affect how people feel about each badge individually.

I did not consider the borders of the badges to be included in the badges color scheme. I won't stop you submitting them, but whether the badges were more suited to have silver or gold or some other kind of border, was something that was going to be decided separately. If I don't get word from you, I'll still accept any edits, but some of your guys sets aren't ready enough to be used in the game until after someone has made game ready versions of the badges. I'd be unwilling to survey them unless you explicitly say you want to submit them.

So I was experimenting with random bullshit and happened upon this, I think a colorr scheme like this could work well for a bug badge, it's more like the colors an actual kabuto helmet would be like.

Made a couple more changes. Mostly resizing them so they're all about the same size.
If possible I'd at least like something to point people in the direction of the older version with the border so they can see what they look like with it.
I'd still like some feedback on these as well >2945

Here are some ice badges and bug badges. For the ice badges, I need everybody to tell me which 3 I should submit as variations. For bug badges, it's a bit more complex, I only care about the shapes/linework here, which all differ from xenon's shapes in the smoothness of the innerr layer or outer layer of wings.
I'm not concerned about the color, but they do have to be submitted colored as something, so: Which color should I submit them as, top row or bottom row? Since xenon is going to have at least these 2, I have to pick whichever I feel will give me the best idea of what shape people like compared to each other and the default shape, and obviously going with whatever people like more will lead to less people voting them lower just due to color, which I obviously don't want because A: i don't want them to lose and B: it woul mess up my data
It is EXTREMELY important you respond to this with what I asked and read it.
Leda, I don't know how you plan on asking me what I want submitted as variations, but I guess PM carson and have him PM me and i'll have him PM you back, I assume I will have till thee morning/mid-day of the 22nd because obviously submissions are open till midnight tonight so you can't expect us to have decided right by then.
Also, xenon, if you couldd make these in your style with the colors as as your colors i'd appreciate it for ice.

Actually, leda, for the bug badges I am submitting as variations for xenons set, can you just ask "which color do you like best" for xenon's bug submsisions, since they only differ color wise anyways, and then as a follow up question, "Shape wise, which do you like best (the differences are X, Y and Z)?" between his default and my edits?

That would avoid the whole problem.

You don't HAVE to submit coloured, but I wouldn't expect people to vote based on shape alone. Colours just look better. The dark muddy blue in the ice badge doesn't look so hot though. Hopefully it gets improved after feedback.

I suppose I am assuming that.
Anyways, I hope you are open to discussing this sorta again f the minor change stages forr how we can work out physical changes vs colors and avoiding tons of bullshit that's the same color once we get there, and that you post the survey preview for this before posting the working survey; We've had this planned 2 months in advance I really don't want this being a clusterfuck due to stubbornness in the end.
As far as what I am submitting, I am submitting the top row here >>6308 as dark badge variations, >>6501 as steel badge variations, >>6528 and the the right silver edged fire badge in >>6453 as firer badge variations, the 2nd and 4th ice badges in >>6541 as ice badge variations, an the bottom row in >>6536 as bug bage variations.
Obviously, that might overlap with what other people already submitted, in which case of course don't have the exact same thing listed twice, but as I don't know other people's selections (which is a huge flaw in this) I can't be sure and have to list al of that. For the bug badge, please detail that the changes between my bug badge submissions and with xenon's bug badge of the same color if it is selected by him is that is how smooth the edges of the exterior gren and interior red wing are diiffers. I think listing the differences between visually similar voting options is absolutely appropriate for the survey and we've done it for other surveys.

Also, I don't see how this has anything to do with what I asked. I did only submit what I like most, but what I lik has nothing to do with color, so t would only make sense to treat color and shape as separate categories so to speak so people are actually voting on what they like the best and not what they hate the least.
I don't see the benefit it not doing it.

IMO, if you have any issues:
Do a survey asking for usernames, then compare the IP address from that survey to the badge survey. Then, ditch the ones that don't match up. (any excess would be from IP scrambling entries)

Hey there, here are my ideas for badges that some of you asked to post not only on wiki, but also here… From first to last there are:
1. Concepts for every badge
2. Randomly choosen badges interlocking
3.-5. An idea for gate lock based on the Aztec calendar stone plus how badges would interact with it
77fdb0 No.6612
>>6611
Wow, I really like these. They have a pretty consistent theme in shape and how they combine in the lock is interesting. Have a few qualms with some of the designs though.
A couple of them, I get what they are, but coul use a bit more to make it come across a bit better like the mountain cap and flippers. I feel the steel ones could maybe use something more as well to make them a bit more interesting.
I like the mask best for Dark. For Psy/fi I get that the the 4th one is supposed to be a yin/yang pience, but it's just too blank. don't reallt like the last three too much especially the last one.
I like both fire ones, but the second one might need thicker lines. I don't know what the bug one is supposed to be. Honeycomb? Spider Webs? For the Gra/Gho I can see the leaf, but I'm not really seeing where the ghost pat is coming in. Is it supposed to be an upside down ghost? Also I like the second one better.
42e357 No.6614
Hey xenon did you ever make that thing?

>>6611
>>6611
these are all really swell
i think that 2nd ice one is the best, although if the 1st one had a more jagged bottom (like the 2nd one does), that would probably be my favorite
steel, i prefer the wrench over the gears sort of for the reasons described here >>6167
in keeping with Stella, though, i'd love to see an edit with a hammer in it instead of a wrench
i agree with brigand that the flippers/water could use more detail to make it clear what it is, but i like the flipper concept
dark, the mask is great - this might be the best dark badge so far
psyfi, i like all of these, and i actually think the simplicity of the center one is nice. best is probably the 5th one though
fire, both are great. i prefer the top one, but i think it could be improved by having another concentric outline of the explosion, if that makes sense? like right now, it's got the center spot and then the outline where it's orange, but i'd like if there was another outline in between in red or something? lemme know if this is unclear and i can try to draw it
bug, i think could use work. my guess is that it's the business end of a bug net, but without a handle, i don't think that comes across well
grass/ghost i like, but i think it could be improved by adding some more dead/ghostly color to it instead of having it be all green

just so you know, we will be doing the final badge surveying in a few days and if you do want to put forward your badge set as a submission, we need you to follow a few rules.
It looks like your stuffs mostly fine, but you are limited to 3 edits plus the "original" for a total of 4 badges of each kind submitted. That means, you're going to need to decide which 4 or fewer psifi badges you would want submitted.
It would be great if you reply before the 6th, since that's the time when I'll be closing down submissions again and getting the survey ready.

Changes to incorporate the feedback given.
I made the Steel badge more angled instead of round at the top and made the inside a solid orange instead of glowing coals. Changed what the water badge was completely, but I also have the original and a bit better looking sub still there.
I made the Psy/fi badge so both share the same "dot" and made them look a bit more like the ! and ?. For the Bug badge, I took out a bit of the detail to make it a bit more simple. I tried the same with the Dark badge, but it didn't look too good. Slight change to Gra/Gho to make it look a bit more dead on one side.
On another note, I'll say what each one is again:
>Ice
A slope with a snowball rolling down and getting bigger. It's supposed to be like the player getting stronger as they go down the mountain.
>Steel
A lit furnace. It originally had hot coals in it, but people had a hard time figuring out what they were.
>Water
SONAR screen. Obviously connected to water, especially deep water. The two other variants are supposed to be submarines.
>Dark
It's a curtain like you'd find on a stage. Curtains are about obscuring the audiences view to only let them see what you want them too, kind of like an illusionist which fits the circus theme and also Oscar's theme of hiding his normal self.
>Psy/Fi
! and ? combined together at the dot. Also, the ! side is rounded while ? is more geometrical to further the duality. Some people were concerned with it having to be reversed, but if need be, the Ouroboros could just be facing the other way.
>Bug
The wing and wing casing of a beetle. The wing casing of a beetle (as well as the part of the spieces name) is translated to sheath which also fits with Ento's theme.
>Gra/Gho
A vine that's living on one end and withered and dead on the other forming an infinity symbol. The symbol is in reference to the endless cycle of life and death.
77fdb0 No.6649
>>2945
I didn't do any changes to these, since it seems like most people weren't going to like them anyways, but I might as well at least say what each badge is since people didn't seem to know.
>Ice
Igloo
>Steel
Anvil with a hammer on it
>Water
Wave
>Dark
A half closed eye
>Psy/Fi
! and ? crossed over each other
>Fire
A rocket shooting into the night sky with a smoke trail
>Bug
A beetle
>Gra/Gho
Skull with a leaf growing out of it.
