You could start with Conky as it can run windowless, in a window, on the command line etc

For those of you who like me do not want to go full-on code on making cool l337 add-ons to your desktop, and are actually dependent of the GUI, I found this software called SCREENLETS, it is super cool, purely GUI and lots of offers.

I wish they had a Screenlet that looks like l33t codes, I bet they have it, tho, I am barely getting to know it.
