Roguelite (binding of isaac, risk of rain, etcetera) discussion is no longer welcome here. Head over to >>>/roguelite/ instead.
Before making a stupid thread asking if x qualifies as a roguelike, consult this handy guide provided by anonymous.

Roguelikes must posses all or most of the following traits and usually have their gameplay based solely around them:
-Permadeath or severe penalty for death
-Turn based actions that encourage chess-like strategy (risk vs reward)
-Equal amounts of luck and skill involved, the skill usually lies in how a player deals with random events or items
-Unidentified consumable items and equipment
-Procedurally generated terrain or events
-A race/class system which encourage different play styles
-Grid based diagonal and perpendicular movement
-Ascii or tiled graphics

While a roguelike often builds themself around these features, a roguelite isntead borrows one or more of them (usually permadeath) and integrates it into a different genre.

As an example:
Roguelike - DCSS as it features all of the above features and its gameplay revolves around said features

Roguelite - BoI as it borrows some features from roguelikes but does not have its gameplay centralised around these features

IA general

Am I the only one who considers Infra Arcana to be an absolute masterpiece? Now don't get me wrong, I realize on a gameplay level, it certainly has its faults and can be dull compared to something like IVAN or DC:SS.
But the thing is, neither of those games have even 1/1000th of the chilling atmosphere, world building, or stylistic minimalist visuals.
I think it's on-par with a fucking Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn painting, in layman's terms.
I only consider one other game in the world an equivalent of a piece of classical art, so that's a really great achievement.

IA general.
I swear, I'm not the IA dev. Is he still rotting away on /rlg/, or has he made the move to 8chan? I can't even remember what his tripcode was so I can search for him in the archives.

UnReal World mods

This game desperately needs a skinwalker mod, where you can play as or try to fight against the skinwalker. Just imagine, you built your humble house and some poor hungry stranger comes by and you invite him in. Give him some food and a nice place to crash for the night so he can get to the next village in the morning.

AND THEN YOU RIP HIM APART EAT HIS INNARDS AND GO HOME TO HIS FAMILY PRETENDING TO BE HIM AND EAT THEM IN THEIR SLEEP TOO

Or the Opposite if you want a 2 spooky 4 u innawoods experience. It can't be that hard to make right?

Roguelike to play at Work ?

pls rec any roguelike that I can play safely at work (Something that won't make people glancing at my screen say "hey, isn't he playing a game ?")

I already like DCSS but the online version is blocked at my place. I have very little knowledge of the other roguelikes though.

UnReal World Fi

Most impossibru Roguelike 2k14.

It will take you many characters before you can survive a single season, and many more before you learn to survive your first full year.

After a long while you will be able to build your first cabin, store enough food to see you through winter and hunt bears with several dogs and skis.

You can also become a cannibal, lure unsuspecting villagers with you on a hunting trip and kill/butcher them for their meat. Your dog will like it but you won't.

Also NEVER EAT MUSHROOMS.

You have been warned.

ADOM

Who ADOM here?

I've won a few times but just normal happy endings.

Want to go for an ultra but I never manage to get a wish.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

Sup /roguelike/.

Anybody playing DCSS? Just starting to get into it. So far I've had the most success with MiDK. Also enjoying playing Monk and Gladiator.

I have yet to win though. Any recommendations for fun characters to try?

DCSS general.

Is there a such thing as multiplayer roguelike? I am not talking about any "roguelites" or "roguelike-likes" here, but instead turn based action on a grid. I know there is a multiplayer version of old Tome but I have never got that really working. Are there any others?

It seems I cannot attach screenshot of ADOM here, so have this.

Never seen this mentioned on /v/ and don't see this in the catalog here.

I rarely visit this place, I just know it exists, so I thought you'd appreciate it if I showed you this game.
From what I've read on their website, it's still in development and will be on steam Greenlight. So it won't be free.

Thoughts?

/roguelike/, what type of music do you listen to when playing your favorite roguelike?

Video related. I play this whenever I have a bionic character in Cataclysm: DDA or any other type of mutant character, like in Elona+
R: 8 / I: 1 / P: 2
Is roguelike the indie crutch?

Does it take more time and effort to design a level a specific way, or the roguelike way?

I like roguelikes just as much as the next guy, but it seems that there may be a flooding of the indie scene with them in the near future, with the success of Necrodancer, Spelunky and BoI:R.

Roleplaying Discussion

Do you roleplay your characters when you are playing roguelikes? Do you use the same character for multiple runs? What do you name your characters?

I've just been naming all my characters @ and not thinking much about them as characters, but after a while I want to unleash the autism.

iOS

What good iOS games have you played? I like playing on the train with my iPad, so I actually do the bulk of my roguelike playing on iOS, though it's obviously not the best OS for roguelikes.
Ones I've played:
868-HACK: Ultra-minimalist and fun. Hack to gain abilities, resources to use abilities and score points. Games are fast.
Brogue: More traditional ASCII. Roguelike. Manages to actually be kind of pretty. Controls can be fiddly.
POWDER: Port of a GBA homebrew. Really fun, with a few classes and a good deity system. Not that tough early on but hard to beat IMO.
R: 8 / I: 1 / P: 2

ITT: Talk about your latest death!

SLASH'EM

As a monk, I got my ass handed to a Jabberwock. Son of a bitch, I punched 70 worth of damage to it and it was still kicking. I also had every #technique avaiable and plenty of resources and yet I still went in with the "If I hit it again he will die for sure!" mindset despite my HP being around 10% left.
R: 6 / I: 2 / P: 2
Dear /Roguelike/,

Fuck you for showing me Elona+. I thought I was just gonna test it out a bit to see what all the fuss was about before going back to some Path of Exile or something, but I wasted almost a whole day on this shit. I screwed up because I didn't understand Etherwinds so I got a butt ton of diseases on my first go and I kept dying because I didn't know that I could allocate skills (the shock when I was Level 7 and I learned to press + on the character sheet).

Embed related; Now made a Mutant Female Claymore who now knows to take shelter during Etherwinds.

But sitll, fuck you all for showing me the way.

Sincerely,
Unberable Faggot

Similar roguelikes to Cataclysm DDA

So, any games with a hideously deep level of crafting and interactivity like Cataclysm DDA out there? List 'em please. ASIDE FROM DWARF FORTRESS, ALREADY HAVE THAT.

Elona general.

Bringing this thread over from the dead /vg/ board.
>Japanese roguelike with an overworld instead of a single dungeon. Death isn't permanent, and the game can be played in many different ways, depending on what you decide to focus on. It is mostly a sandbox. Plenty of humor is also present, both intended and unintended.

What is a roguelike?

What is your PERSONAL definition of a Roguelike?

imo, a Roguelike is a game that is LIKE ROGUE (thus the name) and has to have ALL of the following features:
>ASCII graphics
>randomly generated levels
>permadeath
>TURN BASED

Honestly, anything that doesn't have AT LEAST these four criteria can't ever be referred to as a roguelike. It'd be like calling Super Mario Sunshine a First Person Shooter. Yeah there are some similarities, but it's just too radically different to categorize it in that subgenre.

How do you guys cope with roguelikes requiring so much play time if you want to beat them?

Do you guys religiously play a single title and nothing else till you beat it, and maybe even complete that single roguelike many times before moving on?
Or do you guys generally juggle three-seven roguelikes all at once depending on how you're feeling?

Also, do any of you guys take breaks from roguelike binges and play some shit games to ease your mind? What're some games you play between roguelikes, if any?
R: 29 / I: 1 / P: 3
Does anyone else get upset when they hear people refer to Faster Than Light or Don't Starve as roguelike? Or in general that the hipster indie dev trash has completely bastardized the genre?

There are loads of true RL developers out there making really good RL's don't get me wrong. I just hate how some devs have latched on to the genre as an ``easy'' way of making games, while not respecting the genres constraints.

Hi guys, /agdg/ here.

I haven't made a game before, but I thought that a roguelike would be easy enough to attempt. Here's what I have after a week of work or so… Most of my effort went into making this tileset that I'll be using, which is actually a completely redone ascii set using DF as a base.

I'm not sure what kind of mechanics I'd want to use, or anything else, unfortunately.
R: 14 / I: 2 / P: 4
How does the idea of a /roguelike/ Steam group chat sound?
It'd be used for off-topic socialization and a platform for you to report shit to me personally or make inquiries about board evolution. I'm also in need of mods because none of my friends have any interest in taking up a position and I don't know any better way to get some than to evaluate users within an environment like that and throw them a mod password someday.

I personally think it has potential to be wonderful, albeit it's maybe a bit too early to do something like this with the low traffic we currently get. I don't really talk to video game enthusiasts much because it always ends up being about dota, smash bros, pokemon etcetera at some point and it'd be nice to hang with like-minded people for once.

I know there's going to be opposers, and I'd like to reassure you by stating that I'll have a zero tolerance policy for if and when the chat ends up degenerating into a tumblr wonderland like I've seen so many steam chats do. The steam group will be deleted the moment it starts giving the entirety of the board a bad rep and we will never speak of it again.

So with all that in mind, what do you say?

Ultima Ratio Regum

URR it's procedural generation on crack.

Everything in the game is generated and has an impact on the world, from civilizations, cultures, religion, history and geography to the very leafs on the trees. The world lore (which is also procedurally generated) actually integrates with the gameplay and the game doesn't hold your hand.

The video explains it better than I could.
R: 11 / I: 1 / P: 4
So what are some good ascii roguelikes? When ever I try and do research on the internet I always come to huge lists of 100+ games sorted by genre.

When I was a kid I found ADOM on gamehippo.com and downloaded it because the description sounded pretty cool. After my initial WTF i really got into it and sunk hours into it. The main quests were too hard for me so I used to just pay through the infinite dungeon until I died. This year I played Brogue a fair bit because all I had was an old computer. There's only so much Brogue you can play though, it's on the other end of the spectrum to ADOM, much too simple (not to mention the update that stopped leveling for killing monsters, killing speedy play throughs).

So what's a good ascii rogue like that doesn't throw you in a giant world but has a little more depth than in, out, nick the crystals.

A sci-fi theme would be nice but I'm cool with fantasy.
