How do I get good at roguelikes in general? What are some transferrable RL skills, if you will?

this. there's no way to get good at roguelikes in general; you're going to have tons of failed runs when you're playing a roguelike you've never played before.

MEMORIZE THE KEYPAD

Are there really people out there who have trouble with that? I memorized the keypad controls after just about four hours.

SPANNUNGSBOGEN

Once the impulse to take an action enters into your mind, delay for a moment and try to understand the consequences of that action. You must force patience upon yourself and train yourself to remain conscious and pay attention as you are playing.

This.

All of my this.

I can't tell you how many times I got myself raped playing CataDDA by not doing that. I'd figure I'm safe with a couple rockets or reinforced power armor just to remember that Chicken Walkers abso-fucking-lutely love to put a cannon sized hole in your new armor.

Pretty much this. That guy further up that said you can't just get good at roguelikes has a point. There IS a learning curve element. But even still, playing roguelikes properly requires a very specific mindset, and the skills ARE transferrable. If you want an easy way to train yourself when not playing roguelikes, play with permadeath in mainstream games. Basically as soon as you die, delete. I guarantee it changes the experience. I don't do it very often, but every now and then I'll pick a game I enjoyed and play it with permadeath and I find myself sliding into that mindset again. It feels good man.
