 No.448

Sup /roguelike/.

Anybody playing DCSS? Just starting to get into it. So far I've had the most success with MiDK. Also enjoying playing Monk and Gladiator.

I have yet to win though. Any recommendations for fun characters to try?

DCSS general.

 No.449

>>448
gargoyles are amazing and can reliably win as just about any class

 No.453

DCSS is the roguelike by default, the common denominator so to speak. Everyone here plays, or has played it at some point, you won't be alone.

DCSS has also been incredibly streamlined in the last few versions and geared toward an "e-sports" mentality, so it's relatively easy to win when compared to more brutal roguelikes such as, say, Infra Arcana, Nethack or IVAN.

 No.460

>>453
I can definitely see what you mean about the e-sports thing, especially with web tiles. Is the general opinion that it's too easy now due to "streamlining"?

 No.461

>>460
It's a long story.

Right now, the game is now being designed to please a small sliver of the playerbase that plays the game obsessively every single day. That's why the developers are "streamlining" it and tweaking small, inconsequential things, so those obsessive players can get their wins faster and buff their online score pages. In pursuit of better scores and winrates, obsessive players find themselves doing tedious things to optimize their chances of having good runs. Because they can't bring themselves to stop doing tedious things, they whine to the developers to remove these things to make it fair, otherwise their win ratio would suffer compared to their peers.

That's not to say that all of the changes are bad, just that a good deal of fun features get flushed because a handful of players with hundreds (serious) of wins are sick of them but can't bring themselves to stop playing Crawl. It's like those players in Nethack who pudding farmed and then whined to have pudding farming banned so they wouldn't feel compelled to do it. The developers laughed in their faces and told them to stop being gay babies.

 No.462

>>461
I should also add that the development team also has a number of great developers on it, most of them on board since 2010. Lots of creative and talented people. Lately though, they've picked up a number of those aforementioned obsessive players who have steered development in an sad direction.

I'm not bitter or anything. I've been playing Crawl for more than three years, but I only play it once every six months or so and then stop once I ascend. It's a decent game and a great roguelike, which is why it's disappointing to see parts of it get lopped off because some people can't bring themselves to just go play something else.

 No.470

>>453
The "streamlining" didn't influence the difficulty too much. That said, Crawl isn't hard to win. Comes with being relatively "fair".

 No.474

>>470
I like roguelikes with allot of unique activate items.

DCSS kinda seems to be all about armor and weapon drops. Nethack has all kind of shit to do in it.

I liked it, definitely more user friendly to someone new to the genre.

I got pretty far with a horseman berserker.

 No.475

>>474
yeah, you probably should just play NetHack then

 No.686

Managed to do ok with a MiBe, though I guess it's nothing special. Got to the Depths and decided to go try a few other areas. Died in Lair. I've been playing a lot of times as fighter but having the berserk ability right away made a huge difference.

Can someone explain how to handle skipping a floor? Like if I skip a floor or two will I be holding myself back?

 No.688

>>686
don't skip any floors. here's the sure fire way to approach things in DC:SS.
Don't read ahead if you want to maximize your play time because really knowing when to tackle what dungeon is what makes this game "difficult". In other words these could be considered spoilers.

>kill everything on every floor until you reach the Lair

>kill everything on every floor in lair
>exit lair, go to D:15 killing everything on every floor
>once you reach D:15, return to Orcish mines
>kill everything on every floor in orcish mines and hope you don't get an unlucky roll with high priests everywhere
>return to lair, complete the two extra dungeons in there such as swamp (but always ignore the slime dungeon)
>if those extra dungeons are still too difficult, you can head to Depths and do a few floors there to gain some exp, then return
>once you're done with those, finish every floor in depths and kill every demon in the first floor in hell.
>now you're ready for Vaults
>kill everything on every floor but DON'T enter the fifth floor yet
>instead, head to the Elf extra dungeon in orcish mines and/or grind in the ice sector of Hell.
>by then you'll be level 27 and have maximum stats in a few skills. you'll be ready for the ambush in the Vault.
>destroy everything in floor 5 of vault, while remaining cautious. I recommend staying by the stairs and letting a couple enemies follow you up there so you can fuck them up without concern. bear in mind the warden can close all doors and stairwells and you'll be screwed.
>after obtaining the vault rune, the realm of zot will be a piece of cake.

also, if you want to pretty much guarantee victory even further, switch to The Shining One halfway through the ice realm in Hell because he grants double damage against demons and Trog's skills largely become useless by then.

 No.746

File: 1422571455405.png (94.52 KB, 354x336, 59:56, 1415934414349.png)

>>688
Thank you for the advice. I wouldn't consider that spoilers. I had some success yesterday as MiFi and I joined the Shining One as soon as I found an altar. Ended up dying foolishly when I started a fight with too many enemies.

Tonight I intend to complete Lair. At this point I can breeze through the floors until I get to there (unless I get unlucky).

 No.751

>>746
if you're playing fighter, all religions besides Okawaru and Trog early game are for pro players only.
use okawaru up until the ice realm in hell like I suggested because his skills make early game a piece of cake and he'll gift you 10/10 armor and weapons that'll carry you through the game.

 No.798

I've had thousands of failed runs and escaped with the Orb of Zot once and I still don't know which is superior between Dexterity and Strength. The guides and the wiki are all useless in this regard and I've had so many conflicting answers. "dexterity is better for AC" "no, strength is"
I've even had people tell me it's better to put all points into strength when playing a centaur hunter.

 No.818

>Kobold Chaos Knight
>Not expecting much of anything
>You are now Xom's special plaything!
>"Here take this."
>30 rating armor

>Descend 3 levels into the dungeon, not remembering to identify the various potions and scrolls I've recieved

>"You hear Xom's maniacal laughter!"
>Teleported to the center of 3 orc wizards and 2 adders
>Hopelessly poke at the adders to reduce the inevitable poison
>"Xom finds this hilarious!"
>Pray
>"Xom slaps you with a bull-trout!"
>Manage to petrify one adder with the dagger of chaos, start to work on the other one
>Polymorphs it into Red Devil
>"Xom finds this hilarious!"
>Quaff everything in my inventory
>Potion of mutation
>You lose resistance to fire, you lose resistance to cold, you feel clever
>Xom roars with laughter!
>One green pip of unpoisoned HP left, red demon still doesn't know why he's here.

>Divine lightning arcs across the area!

>Get hit by it.
>-5 HP
>?????
>You leveled up!

 No.828

>>688
>>kill everything on every floor
That's a really shitty advice.
>>once you reach D:15, return to Orcish mines
Why would you do the rest of Dungeon before Orc?
>>if those extra dungeons are still too difficult, you can head to Depths
You probably don't want to do that!
>or grind in the ice sector of Hell.
What the actual fuck???
>you'll be ready for the ambush in the Vault.
The ambush is literally the most harmless thing on V:5.
>if you want to pretty much guarantee victory even further, switch to The Shining One
Except TSO is shit in 3 runes game and Trog's wrath is deadly.

>>751
Yred and Makh are really simple.

>>798
Just raise Dex.

 No.907

>>818
I tried doing a series of Xom runs and actually got fairly far on one of them as a Demonspawn Chaos Knight.

I had the Spider Nest rune.

The most disappointing thing about that run was that I got killed by my own cockiness in Swamp. A death by some Xom fuckery would have been way more apt.

 No.908

>>453
Why would you compare it to IVAN? The devs themselves state that victory is a glitch, and if people are still finishing it, they should let them know so they can patch (fuck your tight boypuss) appropriately.

 No.911

I'm done with dungeon crawl. Just… just go look at the changelog for .16

Absolute bullshit.

 No.912

>>911
i skimmed through it and didn't see anything unsettling, what're your major gripes?

 No.913

>>912
Not >>911, but I saw some things I liked and disliked (enemy brand auto-ID can be good; removal of Death Knights a shit). Most of my whines are related to the continuing overparing done by the devs. There's a fuzzy line separating pruning of cruft and unnecessary reduction in flavor, and I often find myself complaining about crawl eating negative updates in the form of the latter.

 No.914

wait was Salamander hide armour removed? I'm not seeing it in the main tiles image but I'm also not finding anything about it in the change log.
I love salamander armour ;_;

 No.920

>>914
>was Salamander hide armour remove
Not yet.

 No.923

I just started playing and thus far I really like it.

I encountered Robin again and found out that ugly creature can turn invisible.
Easier on the eyes that way but had I know that I would've cast Corona instead of Ensorcelled Hibernation.

See, I wasn't paying too much attention and assumed I had stabbed her dead while sleeping and got suprised and almost slain while making short business of her followers.

I'm playing a Vine Stalker Enchanter, by the way.

 No.926

i know this board is slow but what is up with the new Nemelex? I'm in 0.16 and he's throwing two decks at me every floor, i can't use them up fast enough, and i'm a damn minotaur.

also really like the new (ish) storm god. i haven't played since 0.13, I think.

 No.927

I might just have a fairly good run.
XL 10 Dungeons 9

- Amulet of the Gourmand on lvl 1
- Ring of Dexterity +2 on lvl 2
- Amulet of Resist Mutation lvl 4
- +4 Robe of the Night also lvl 4

I got a noob roll, I guess.

>>926
The changelog has only this to say:

>Nemelex Xobeh:

>Draw One and Peek at Two are no more.
>Cards have been changed thoroughly over once more.
>Nemelex now grants destruction decks again.

 No.932

XL 21 MiBe
I have now cleared Lair, Orc Mines, Depths, Snake Pit, Shoals, and the first floor of Hell.

Should I switch from Trog to TSO like one poster suggested above? I guess I will go to Vaults next

 No.934

>>932
Nope.

 No.935

>>934
Thanks, stuck with Trog and everything is going well. About to enter Vaults:5

Well, that was fun.

Same here, OP.

It was a pain in the ass to build from source. I can't wait to update it ;_;

>mfw slain by a rat (x9001)

It's still loads of fun though.

I can honestly say that 90% of the time, what kills me is my own cockyness. I recently just said "fuck it" to permadeath and just started save scumming. I have been playing this game for atleast 5 years i both love it and absolutely hate it, both at the same time. My most recent character pictured, i know that sooner or later i am going to get cocky and then do someting stupid, i easily could have avoided, that will get my character killed. However i just tabstormed my way trough a hill giant and an ugly thing, without loosing any HP, so i have nothing to worry about right? *sarcasm*

My VSEn died yesterday.
I fell through a hole two levels down into a four tile room with a Hydra and some Ogre. Thanks to my shadowy alliance with Dithmetos they didn't notice me.
I stabbed them without a problem.

Outside, I found a Wolfspider Simulacrum asleep. It woke up the moment I wanted to stab it, hit me four or so times at once and did some ice damage. Instantly dead.
I guess I forgot that I was two levels further down than I should be.

Currently, it's falling down levels that kills me.
Just started a Tengu Cunjurer, got lucky to find altar of Vehumet on lvl 2, fall for 3 fucking levels, find stairs back up, stand in front of Sigmund, get fucked by Sigmund.

Fucking holes, man!

Fuck Sigmund.
Like really, fuck him.
I died to him twice yesterday, first with a decent fighter with a +3 hand axe, +3 ring of strength, and +6 ring of dexterity. Second with a okay archer who died because you can't shoot someone you can't see.
The kicker? I had an unidentified ring of see invisible.

Now I'm playing HuNe and it's comfy as fuck.

Literally all online games are recorded automatically. But sorry, I'm not going to sift through Necromancer Zot runs to find one that cheeses it. You can check various !tv related entries in the learndb for amusing games/deaths, such as embarrassing_deaths, hilarious_deaths, hilarious_cdo_deaths, great_near_misses, or epic_bugs (yes they really did accidentally double all player melee damage, and yes no one noticed for two fucking weeks, this is how casual the playerbase/devs are). My favorite is the bug that caused a guy to evoke disc of storms with infinite power, thus killing himself.

>>986
It's just that a level 1 necromancy spell shouldn't be able to summon a monster that's more powerful than level 6/7 summoning spells. Especially since a level 1 single school spell can be cast with literally no magic skills if you have like 12 int.

I love it but I suck at it so bad, the farthest I've ever gotten was a Minotaur deathnight, and I died in Swamp: 2

Off the top of my head, you could balance AS by making every Skelly you raise keep one point of MP.
So if you had twelve MP, and three skellies, then you'd have only nine MP to wreck shit with.
Might be a bit overkill though skellies are pretty squishy.

I had around 30 wins when I quit playing. Hill Orc Healer is by far the easiest combo, not that I recommend playing that combo, Elyvilon is ridiculously unfun.

>>992
Demigods are really good just because they can get through the early game better than almost any other race. And they're really fun because they don't have an obligation to revolve their whole character around a god.

>Off the top of my head, you could balance AS by making every Skelly you raise keep one point of MP.

That's too much of a nerf early and not enough of a nerf later. I suggested making undead minion stats scale with spellpower and then putting spellpower caps on AS/AD, since that makes sense thematically and prevents dudes with 1 necromancy skill from having fucking titans as allies. Got typical dev 'muh fun' and 'feel free to code it yourself :^)' responses.
