Does anyone else get upset when they hear people refer to Faster Than Light or Don't Starve as roguelike? Or in general that the hipster indie dev trash has completely bastardized the genre?
There are loads of true RL developers out there making really good RL's don't get me wrong. I just hate how some devs have latched on to the genre as an ``easy'' way of making games, while not respecting the genres constraints.

Nah I don't really care how the dev describes their games as long as I like them

you need to ask yourselves: what makes any specific game a roguelike?
i love metroidvanias. it is my favorite genre of vidya, bar none other. so, what makes a metroidvania? a metroivania game should be:
-played in the 2D, side-scrolling perspective
-emphasize player character progression
-the game world is mostly static, and wholly represented by a map
there are others, but you get the picture. strictly define your game on the visual, as well as the gameplay.

Nah they're basically just shitty knock offs. Don't Starve is a shitty rehash of glorious UnReal World just like Minecraft is a shitty rehash of glorious Dwarf Fortress.

Isn't FTL something like a Rougelike-like or Rougelite or something like that?

But yeah, keep labeling every game a roguelike to the point of the term losing all meaning. It's such a nice marketing buzzword and the world didn't have enough of them yet.

I'm not a huge roguelike player, but for the past year or two a lot of faggot hipster game "journos" called all sorts of shit roguelike. If it isn't top down (or isometric) it isn't RL. If it isn't turn-based, it isn't RL. That is hugely obvious.
The thing is that most game journos don't play games and never have. They are casuals at best.

Not really because:
>It's only retarded fucking game journalists, you'll notice that the devs of roguelites NEVER call their games roguelikes
>It's only a Flavour of the Month and they'll move on to raping some other classic game genre after the hype of Binding of Isaac dies down.

it's a great way to tell what types of babby games they play.
If they think Don't starve is a roguelike then they might as well stick to team fortress

i get mad hearing that because it's a double slap to the face that pieces of shit like those can make huge amounts of money while being as shallow as a newgrounds flash game while also being labeled a genre that it completely isn't. mostly thinking of the binding of isaac here

ok hold on, What is a Roguelike? Other then a randomly generated set of rooms/levels, tend to have perma-death, with a set goal at the end, and randomly generated loot and monsters?

Don't mind too much anymore since those games are pretty fun.
As long as there's someplace to discuss actual roguelikes, it doesn't matter too much.
>devs have latched on to the genre as an ``easy'' way of making games, while not respecting the genres constraints
Look on the bright side, the amount of roguelites in the last few years may have given the roguelike genre itself a burst of popularity as a side effect. In any case, true roguelikes aren't going anywhere.

>>466Well it can certainly be played with permadeath, which does create a surprisingly enjoyable experience. Towards the end of minecraft when I was getting kinda tired of it I did a hardcore single player run. Those first few days are tense, as is the first hell dive. Difficulty is still way lower than a real roguelike but hey it's fun.
>>158I wouldn't call it mocking. BOI is a roguelite and that's fun as shit. Anyways roguelikes are too hard to quantify. If you stick to the strict interpretation you miss out on good stuff like TOME or Dwarf Fortress.
