YOU MUST RESPECT THE ROBOT

Sure, we all know about the robot. We all respect the robot, but how well do you know Melih Gökçek? Here are a few facts to get you started with the Father of the Robot. Lifted from Wikipedia edition

* Not only has he been mayor for over 20 years, he has won five elections. Although the 2014 election was very close, multiple power outages and problems in pro-opposition districts pushed him into the lead! All requests for a recount were rejected, and Gökçek was free to progress onto the final plan.

* When he won his first mayoral election, he ran under the Welfare Party, a party which is now outlawed in Turkey for being an Islamic party (Turkeys constitution has similar provisions regarding separation of church and state). After the party was disbanded, the treasury asked for the return of 1 trillion lira, which officials said were already spent on party activities. Although almost 70 people ended up with prison sentences, none were longer than 54 months.

* After the welfare party was found to be illegal, he ran under the Virtue Party, which was also later found to be illegal. This time, he set a record as the first mayor to win two elections in Ankaras history.

* For the remainder of his elections, he ran under the Justice and Development Party, which although not yet found illegal, continues to face strong allegations that it is religiously affiliated. This party was also central during the recent scandals and protests which made worldwide news in the past two years.

* During the 2007 water crisis of Ankara, Gökçek suggested the water be transported from the Kızılırmak river. After the water was tested, it was found to contain unsafe levels of toxins. The report was published, and days later, the Mayors office fined the university almost 2 million lira.

* In 2003, he attempted to legally cut off all foot traffic from the city center, the plan faced heavy opposition, and was later rejected after it was found out he had bussed in supporters from different areas to vote in favor of his plan.

* He replaced the middle 4 lanes of a major road with a recreation complex which he named "Rainbow". Although the project ended up costing over 3 million lira, and includes several shops and cafes, it has sat empty for 10 years, possibly due to the fact that it sits in the middle of a very busy road.

* In 2012, Melih commented during a television broadcast that women who get abortions should kill themselves rather than their children, a comment perceived so inflammatory it prompted the foundation of at least one pro-choice organization.

* During the recent protests, he has been extremely active on his twitter account, voicing strong support of the government. Among his notable exploits during this period are posting a video of a police officer being beaten by protesters (the video being from an unrelated incident).

* Despite his extremely controversial tweets, he won the Best Social Media by a Mayor Award from the Internet Marketing Association in 2012, he even went on to win the same award in 2013, and secured the Best Use of Technology By An International Municipality award for Ankara.

* In 2014, he was vocal in his support of singer Yıldız Tilbe after a controversial series of tweets, including "God bless Hitler, it was even too few what he did to the Jews, he was right" and "The Jews will be destroyed by Muslims, in the name of Allah, not much time left for it be done".

* During the recent protests, he was outspoken against BBC reporters in his city, even going as far as declaring they were English spies through a hashtag. This was quickly countered by a hashtag declaring him a "provocateur". Melih followed by threatening to sue every person who uses the hashtag.

* After securing the most recent election, a journalist suggested on social media that Melih wasn't Turkish, and was in fact Armenian. This was countered by a lawsuit for 10,000 lira for "libel and psychological damage".

Well guys, that's all I have for now. He is coming up for re-election soon, how do you think he will do?

I stand corrected and duly admonished.

I will endeavour to respect the man that built the Robot which (who?) we all respect.

I'm stickin' with Go Kek as the Anglicized version of the name.

It's an exploitable, the original has his him playing "Fishing Hole", the theme song to The Andy Griffith Show, I believe. I can't find the original again, but what little I could gather from trying to translate the comments would imply that he said something along the lines of "When my opponents make me angry or upset, I put this on, and everything in my world is okay again." If you can point a translator at any of the more popular videos on his youtube channel, with a little patience you can faintly make out the massive butthurt behind the language barrier.

This is the original song he's playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWMHKSMcOkg

the video is an except from his 9 minute length rant about the gezi protests. at the end of the video he blames the protest to foreign forces an reminds them that "whatever they'll do it will hit them back" (poor translation since its a proverb) also thats the name of the song.
