Oh, hey. We're actually having old posts pruned now.

Is this place as shit as /sci/ on half chan was?

Also research thread! I study calibration mechanisms for heavy ion therapy, what about you?

My research relates to past greenhouse gas budget in Earth's atmosphere.

I'm a grad student who works in ice core science - so I got to go to Greenland and Antarctica almost every year. The field is pretty small so if I go further it'll be very easy to doxx me.

Ask me anything related to Antarctica/Greenland/Arctic

God damn it, /sci/, this board is barely moving.

How many of you guys here are researchers? Applied or fundamental?

Applied research master race here. Doing something on speech signal processing and having to learn linguistic and everything.

God damn it, io9. It's not that mysterious. But, yes, I am surprised.

Did some research on antioxidant genes in cyanobacteria, currently a bum.

Which part of the process are your calibration mechanisms used in?

Is there any chance of thawing out a bacteria or virus that humans don't have resistance to?

What's the oldest ice you've looked at?

What kind of tests do you run on the ice cores?

 No.2541

Yeast genetic engineering.

Sad to hear it, anon. But congrats on getting out of a dead end career! Believe it or not, a bum with a PhD is in a much worse spot than without.

Learn a skill and get a job, and enjoy not being expected to work more than 40 hours per week, and actually getting yearly raises for good work.

>Is there any chance of thawing out a bacteria or virus that humans don't have resistance to?

If it existed, I bet there would be a fair chance of thawing one.

However, you have to ask: How did this pathogen gain the ability to infect humans in the first place? Did it exist at the same time as humans? Then why did humans not gain resistance to it in the first place?

Humans have only been around for a few 10ks of generations. Not a lot of time to lose resistance, really.

I do computational research on the evolution of stars in binary systems.

Is it not possible for the pathogen to be able to affect humans by its own nature/structure without having been previously exposed to them?

Not happening

Yes, but unlikely.

Just give it time, Anon. It's only a matter of going to sleep enough times with an empty stomach. You'll sort yourself out without the PhD hanging like an albatross around your overqualified neck.

My research was not a "dead end career" as you put it. It simply wasn't my end goal in life. I have a bachelor's in zoology now and plan on a master's and PhD eventually to continue doing research. Cyanobacteria just wasn't for me.

 No.2561

I'm majoring in psychology with a philosophy minor

I'll be hearing about your 50 year old divorced wife who can't bear the thought of living alone.

I meant that, usually, when you have a PhD in biology and no academic research position, finding non-academic jobs becomes very difficult. Without the PhD, the problem is much less serious. Didn't mean to call your research a dead end.
