Oh, hey. We're actually having old posts pruned now.

First of all, get all yo friends on this board cuz it's pretty dead and I like science.

Second, can we all take a minute to appreciate the maglev trains of Shanghai? Electromagnets are very attractive, no?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Maglev_Train

 No.3065

Is that an actually functioning train line using maglev now? As in not just a test track? I didn't realize we had finally gotten this far with maglev. I've read up on them before and it seems like it's really had a lot of difficulty getting adoption. Can't wait for vacuum tube trains!

We've had them quite a while now bro. We had a low-speed maglev in Birmingham airport and that was a few years ago. This is a high-speed which works with different tech (and is much cooler).

China has embraced them because China knowsss.

Vacuum tubes sound cool, yeah.

While vacuum tubes offer great speed increases they also increase the construction and maintenance cost to a point where to don't think it will ever be economically viable.

If people were willing to pay big money to get places fast the concord would still be flying.

Actually the main problem with the Concorde was the sonic booms and limited service because of city ordinances against them. I think there may still be a future for supersonic passenger flight if technology to greatly diminish or inhibit sonic booms altogether ever reaches maturity.

All dis swaggy transport and people still want to walk.

Also, this board is kinda dead.

 No.3074

Eh, I used to be a fan, but once you take a hard look at transportation you realize there are many better ways of doing it…fixed rail isn't really that attractive anymore. Autonomous Vehicles (LV3/LV4) is where our future lies.

 No.3079

I used to live in Shanghai, and I've used that train a couple times. It's quite fast, and very silent. Slightly wobbly at times, especially during turns, but it's pretty cool. I can confirm that the tickets are expensive as fuck tho.

Does the train continue levitating while boarding?
