I much prefer 2004.
Now if UT'99 had wall-dodging, then it might be WAY more fun.
Speakin' of, I think UT4 might be a good middle ground between 2004 and '99. Jumping, Dodging, Slope-dodging, Wall-dodging, Wall-sliding, Rolling, Lift-jumping, Piston-jumping, Rocket-jumping, Shard-jumpin' (embed-related), etc.
All of those combined, plus some great map design, make it really interesting. The movement seems to be in that nice middle ground where ye be in control enough that the map doesn't totally dictate yer movement and ye still have tons of options and can be rather unpredictable, but map-reliant enough so that all the maps don't play out the same and the only thin' that separates them gameplay-wise be weapon/spawn layout.
Not to mention power-ups like shield belt and jump boots are makin' a return.
