I honestly got the game in September, a few days after launch. I'm on and off, I sometimes can't find it in me to marathon a game. Anyways though the game isn't my favorite entry in the series, it's still a good game, that did something right to hook me after about 56 hours of gameplay, I'm only 52% done. The main flaws in it is that the story is pretty lame and there are a lot of repeat missions, but hey, I'm still hooked.

Hey guys. I took some time today to tackle a question that I've seen thrown around a lot recently, that of Yumi's character development. I used only stages from the Gessen story, and only her stages in particular, to try building up where the important points are. I feel like, between the overwhelming popularity and the cutespam her development is lost in the mix. It doesn't help that a lot of the big scenes tend to be the whole school

I'm not trying to make people like her, but ever since seeing the part of the OVA that made me feel baad for her I've wanted to do something like this, and I think it's overdue with EV coming out soon. Crimson Squad in general steals the show in SV. New Hebi's is alright if you focus in on Imu and Murasaki awkwardly trying to connect as sisters. After finishing the missions today, the takeaway I got was that Yumi realizes she has to make her own distinction as to what good and evil are, since she had to go against the idea that she had taken to heart as the one truth for so long. It's actually something that I felt was lost if you play the game straight through, because The scenes where this happens almost always involves each of the Gessen, and the other 4 exit the stage and leave her there I think this is a weak point in the storytelling this time around, since it feels like a high-school stage play, in a sense.

It's why I focused on the Gessen story for her characterization. In the Hanzo story she's unfazed and unchanged. It's Hanzo that fights Gessen, then battles Hebijo in the street, then the Crimsons, and then Gessen again. So in the Hanzo story, they're unquestioned and have no reason to doubt themselves until the end

Yes, she did, and yeah they do, particularly in Chapter2. That's why I noted that chapter 3 begins her change. Imu preparing to die for Miyabi begins the change because there's nothing evil in giving yourself up for another. Further, the scene with Homura immediately shows how she's more receptive to talking about it, since she wouldn't listen to Asuka at all in Ch2. She still doesn't get it, but it's this talk with Homura that shows her there is good in "evil" people and is why she goes back to Hanzo, to make her own choice in life and fight Asuka to determine if what Homura says is true

I originally wanted to revisit the whole story, but I decided instead to just play Yumi's stages for the dialogue and VN sections. Honestly, I feel like playing the stories more make things easier to see. In this case, I feel it could be easy to miss Yumi's development if you don't play the stages in tandem, because it's easier to see the change in her approach.

Homu in the Hanzo Burst story wanted to prove that good is better than evil. This all falls to pieces when Homu learns that "sacrificing yourself to the will of evil" is more than just a pledge to make at the start of every mission. Even after Burst and her worldview changes, Homura still values power but now she has to deal with finding her place in the world and making sure her decisions don't hurt her friends.

We know she's still looking to fight evil, but what we don't know is the how, since that's where the story ended. Wow I screwed that up. Homu wanted to prove that evil is better than good because "while few can stand in the light, the darkness accepts everybody" or something. She quite confident that Hebi will win over Hanzo because of that.

Actually, rather than Ikaruga. It was both the arrival of Mirai and Hibari's time with them what made the hebijo change their mindset.

The point still stands, despite all the stuf she has liven through, Yumi still hasn't bothered to think by herself once. And the time she did, it was a comedy gag that only made her a cookie cute kawai desu character.

You're probably right about the plot since I've avoided major spoilers, but whenever they're spoken about the consensus is that Gessen and Hebijo benefit, while Hanzo and Crimson are just there for the most part of the game's story. It could easily still be about fighting Youma, since that's what we as fans know the girls are moving toward, while the others might be in a position to learn about it moving forward. Perhaps Hanzo and Crimson are there because they've done it before, in Burst and SK2? We won't know the specifics for a while.

If they haven't fought them before, perhaps they're brought along just to make sure everyone knows how to do it it would stink, because it would be a retcon, but it might also verify the existence of multiple universes/timelines if that's the case, right?

You're totally brushing off that something like her believing something her whole life was proven wrong. She's only been in one game so far that has what would be considered a story plot. BA was just the GH's cranked to 11. You can't have a story that shows her completely showing her changing that drastically and show what has come from it. Homu had both the Hanzo and Hebijo stories in Burst to fully flesh her out while Yumi has had 5 mission for herself in SV, there's no way they could've packed in as much story in 5 missions as two whole stories. Yes, that's a failure on Takaki's part but she's gonna be shown in a game that will give her (and other characters that fell by the wayside) more time to develop.

And I meant anything showing her growing as a character as a result of the events of SV. Yes, she gained a trophy for her GH called that, which is once again her side story that isn't the main plot, but like you said, we'll have to wait and see until we can get our hands on EV.

Mirai and Hibari helped Yomi change her mind on rich people? She would still be the same if Ikaruga never showed her that rich people are no different to poor people when it comes to morals and ideals, but this is all besides the point. Mirai, Hibari, and the conflict around them did help start the change in the Hebijo so I will concede that point.

In a game where she had to be forced to stop thinking like that, I believe it's a big development for her that she was able to stop thinking that she had to live her life by what someone else told her and to start thinking for her own self. She's had a whopping 5 story missions for her to develop, considering what happened to her in those 5 missions, there was no room for her to show what came of her worldview shattering.

And the plot element of Kurokage being dead is the "Gessen story" that they follow in EV. It has elements from Crimson Squad in the story as well, it's not just a straight sequel to one storyline.

The fact that she was proven wrong and has nothing else shows how lacking she is as a character. The other Gessen girls have the same upbringing and background as her yet they more than just "blindly following Kurokage's ideals"

Her whole character was that she was only doing what she believed was right by someone who was wrong. She got proven wrong and so now she has to find out what she needs to do in life. The other Gessen were blindly following Kurokage as well, but that too changed. What else does she even need to show now that she learned she was wrong? I want to point out as well that I'm not saying Yumi is interesting, I'm trying to say that she does have development throughout SV when people always say she doesn't.

Yumi is a cold character because "hurr durr ice" but that doesn't mean she doesn't have anything, it just means she doesn't like to interact with others, just like Yagyu but at least she has a friend in Hibari. I don't think it's a bad thing that she decides to isolate herself, it could be because she really liked being with Kurokage and after he passed, she didn't want to befriendly with anyone else. The line she gives Asuka about wanting to be her friend is, I believe to be, indicative of how she interacts with others. Asuka was the first person you see her asking to be friends with.

And that's one story to start interacting with people outside of telling them that they're wrong. She'll now have a chance to play off of other people and show something more than what we've seen before. If she doesn't improve or change at all in EV then I will concede that point, but I have a feeling and watching some EV spoilers that she's gonna become a better character.
