Hate to say it but that's a huge turn-off for me right there.

Dune was my ideal sci-fi series because it was really about politics and heroes, and was set in a futuristic universe.

I'm not about that action-packed stuff unless it makes for an interesting plot device (not "X has been slain!")

Anyone recommend anything similar?

 No.266[Reply]

I started watching Defiance a while ago. The show is decent enough, not as brilliant as some of the other stuff that exists, like Breaking Bad or Daredevil, but fun to watch. However, what bothers me is that I was promised a sci-fi show, and so far, it has nothing science-y on it. I like to imagine the show in a true fantasy setting, and it works.

>Rugged protagonist

Make him a rogue knight.

>Aliens

They all look freaking human anyway, so just make them humans or dwarves or shit.

>Guns

Replace with swords

>Alien invaders

Replace with the army of the dark lord.

And so on. Anyway, my point being, why the fuck do people accept everything as science fiction just because it has starships in it?

I've watched the show some more now. It gets a lot more science-y later on, exploring things like cloned Manchurian Agents. Still soft as fuck, but at least it's sci-fi now.

Halfway through the third season now. The show keeps piling up issues. Surprise, a main character has once been raped! That felt too SJW for comfort. GoT handles teh raep better, in my opinion. Also, Irisa has become completely useless due to being a pacifist. Still has its moments. There was one episode that was almost on the level of the average Daredevil episode.

In the meantime, I've also watched Firefly. The show is fucking godlike, as is the movie (Serenity), much better than Defiance. Probably not enough science-y enough for fans of really hard sci-fi, at least not enough to appreciate it as sci-fi.

>She goes upstairs and confronts him

>Attacks Dragon Feng

>Critical hit

>Cuts off his arm

Now for the rest of this session. I gave two players secret missions that they were not supposed to share with the other players. Mel had to kill a psychosurgeon and steal his cortical stack for the Nine Lives cartel, the hacker girl had to make sure he's safe and to get data from him. This will get important later on.

>Group talks about what to do next

>Damage control successfull

>Group gathers in front of his appartment building

>Mel rolls to break it open

>Perfect success

>Smashes the door to pieces, as well as the cabinet it was barricaded with

>Goes in front of the door to psychosurgeons appartment

>He aims a pistol through the door while answering

>Mel prepares to fire through it with a hand laser as he can see through light walls

>Hacker girls rolls for SOM (physical strength, basically) to push him aside

>Critical hit

>Tackles a combat robot aside

>Mel misses

>Chases after the psychosurgeon

>Prepares to beat him to death

>Hacker girl manages to appeal to his good side

>Collect myself and improvise

>They enter the serverroom of the AGI

>Everyone fights against the security bots there, except for the swarmbot, who instead attacks all cameras

>He then goes on to complain about how the AGI still knows where they are despite him destroying the cameras in every room they are in

>Explain to him that this would be akin to complaining that a guardsmen knows you're there after you stabbed his eyes out

>The smartass still keeps fucking complaining

>Eventually, they upload an uncorrupted backup of the AGI

>Head back out

>Stopped by Direct Action

>Mel makes an intimidation check against them

Had another session. It was a fuckload of fun, but we didn't move forward at all. I chalk that up to EP melee weapons not doing enough damage and the armor system being flawed. A super-strong character does two points more damage with a punch than a weak character does. He also hits more often, but still. Having two armored characters fight each other with low-tier melee weapons (and most melee weapons are low-tier) is frustrating as fuck.

>New player in the group, playing a man-eating plant with the mind of an octopus whose job is owning the spaceship and introducing the characters to Firewall, a secret organization protecting mankind from X-Class events

>Two DA mercenaries escort the group to the spaceport

>Their commander (I'll call him Hans Landa, because I kind of acted the character like him) talks to someone via the mesh

>Two guys in my group hear that he has been ordered to kill them when no witnesses are around

>Tell the rest of the group via mesh

>Mel walks up to one DA mercenary

>Prepares a devastating uppercut

>Critical failure, so he hits himself in the chin

>Everyone begins laughing

>Say "The only thing that can destroy Mel is Mel"

>Realize Mel is armored and that all the damage has been negated

>Sister who plays Mel asks if we can roll for intimidation

>"Sure, why the fuck not"

>Success

>The DA goon is shellshocked because he saw how badass and crazy Mel is

>Him and Mel fight

>Meanwhile, Landa shoots at character of my little sister

>She takes out her crossbow with poisoned darts to shoot him

>Shoots herself in the foot

>Takes out the dart, tries to throw it, hits her hand

>Attacks him with her monofilament sword, throws it on the ground by accident

In terms of "world domination" humans are perfect because if we don't like a habitat we make it habitable: we don't need millennia to adapt to it.

Gotta remember that evolution isn't out to create the "ultimate predator," it's just out to continue the species (in its current habitat.)

Crocs do a great job around rivers but naturally would be useless in a desert.

This does imply that birds would have an advantage in terms of getting around the whole globe: but even then birds would be adapted to the locations they stick to.

Scavengers would love a world with more of every animal. (Dead)

The Culture. Everything this anon says is true. Banks was a novelist first and a science fiction writer second. He created worlds and scenes that are so vivid that they are more alive than any movie could be.

>…everything looks bleak and simplistic now

Never a truer statement has been made. Of all the more modern sf that has come out lately there are a few that have tried to capture the same essence but just don't come close. It is frustrating. Read these.

OLD TITLES THAT NEED TO BE READ

Another anon has mentioned Dune. Frank Herbert.

Asimov. The Foundation series. If they take your fancy then everything else he has written will be great. The man was a genius.

H. Beam Piper. Federation. Empire. Space Viking. Lord Kalvan series. Lesser known but was a world builder around the same time as Asimov. He started a human history that involved one book/story from each century of this history. His main premise was that humans and history repeat, that what has gone before will happen again, so that a smart society should be able to not make the same mistakes again and again. The failure of that is humans are human, and we fail because of our own short sightedness and fears and weaknesses.

Other than that, I suggest you read a rulebook, look up all the armies and then find a codex you like and read that. I didn't read anything after the fourth or fifth edition; I've heard that anything after the fifth edition or so is shit.

Qualitatively speaking, I think the renewed Codex Chaos Space Marines of the third edition (pic related) is the best codex. Great background info, and a billion ways to customize your army.

I'd rather not discuss 40k here as well, because /tg/ is already partially dedicated to it, but having fantasy elements in science fiction isn't uncommon, just check the retro scifi thread for examples.

Bet, does anyone else feel like the movie Event Horizon was a 40k prequel?
