 No.487

Heyo /sf/! I love sci-fi. Especially hard sci-fi.

I also love world-building and world-building threads, so why not combine the three?

The rules are simple:

In this thread we come together to create a hard-scifi universe.

You post some lore with the only two rules being that it has to be

A: scientifically accurate and B: not against any lore someone else posted above you.

Please don't be a dick and work around something someone already posted, for example:

>Anon A:"The Federation lost the war."

>Anon B:"BUUUUT They managed to create a new technology that allowed them to revert time, tell their past selves what to do and they then won the war."

That would be a dick move. Don't be a dick.

I will start:

> Humanity has not left the solar system yet.

God-tier thread, anon. I'll think of something cool later. In a bit of a rush right now.

> the pirates steal fuel-tanks from the trade ships, hollow them out, add life-support systems and use them as rotating habitats with artifical gravity.

> due to the constant forces being applied to the tanks, they are prone to break and the pirates have to steal new tanks every year or so

>Jupiter zone is therefore about to be declared as a no-fly zone for non-military personnel, including civilians, scientific missions, traders and cargo ships

>Public unrest is imminent as it would both cripple the free trade and would bring a potential risk of pirate attacks on unprotected colonies

Don't be afraid to add ideas. Some questions for Anons who can't think of anything:

Why are they pirates / outlaws? Are they the fighting the good fight (if so, why?) or are they just general renegades?

What does altering the DNA in >>489 imply?

 No.493

>Genetic sequences can be copyrighted

>Punishments for illegally copying a genetic sequence are harsh

>All the copyrights are in the hands of a few megacorporations and governments

>Outlaws try to work around that by making alternative genotypes for certain traits (like increased muscular hypertrophy or fluorescent hair)

>Many of these genotypes have unintended side effects, even if they achieve the desired trait

Hope that made sense. Not a a genetics-fag here.

What happens to the children of those who have modified their genes and used copyrighted material?

Will they get a DMCA claim?

Why not answer these yourself? I wonder how others would expand this idea.

Fine:

>If more than 50% of your genes have been modified, the company can charge horrendous fees all life long.

>people try to avoid this by choosing their partner carefully, but the tests are expensive and thus the average joe can't afford one for EVERY child they want to make, or make accidentaly.

>In the year 2237 a company named "Rockhole Enterprises" bought "Hyberion's" copyright on an IR-visibility gene. This allowed them to obtain almost 68% of the entire US military, as well as around 90% of all pilots, by forcing them to either pay extreme amounts of money, or join their own private military.

>Rockhole was then separated into multiple companies in a bloody civil war, where each shareholder took some part of the troops and organized their own private army.

>The government was unable to stop the bloodshed, it only ended 6 years later with the attrition war of Mars, killing most troops on all sides.

>Before the "Rockhole-war" the US was the biggest economic center of the world and managed to buy parts of Europe.

>Though after a stock crash closely related to the Rockhole-war (people were pretty much gambling on who would be the winner), their economy crumbled to dust.

>The US was seperated into it's individual states.

>China and Russia entered a war where each party wanted to grab the biggest amount of American soil.

>The "America Crisis" is known as the biggest naval war so far, taking place mostly in the pacific.

SciFi is not always about space you know! Come up with some neat naval-scifi if you have any ideas.

>It is estimated that several dozen smart Yu-20 Mòrì torpedoes are still active in the pacific, cruising around at speeds low enough to be virtually invisible to most sensors at a reasonable distance

>Each of these has an explosive yield of 600 kilotons of TNT

>The creators of the guideline-algorithms of these torpedoes were killed by the russian GRU to prevent the construction of further Mòrì

>Due to this, it is almost impossible to disarm them, nor is anyone capable of predicting where they will hit next

>The best bet of solving this would be to catch one and reverse-engineer it, according to Chinese computer scientists

 No.506

Wow. That's a MASSIVE warhead.

What kind of target was it meant to destroy? Carriers I assume?

Why would the Russians kill the engineers? They could have continued development if it was such a feared weapon, and killing your engineers is never a good thing to do. Especially not in SciFi.

>The most notable one being the lunar-wars, where local rebels were supported by the Russian secret service, and security forces were supported by China.

>The lunar-wars ended with the terror attack of the 8th November, where the local rebels managed to poison the Tjan-Go-Tan Main trading hubs air supply

>Around 80.000 people died and even more starved/suffocated because the chain of supply to almost every lunar base was disrupted.

Africa's economy has resurged from a leadership and development coalition of South Africa, a stabilized Liberia, and Nigeria in a new and more EU-style African Union, the original having collapsed decade before after the ousting of Robert Mugabe from the presidency of Zimbabwe during the Rhodesian revolt, orchestrated by a coalition of the descendants of Rhodesian diaspora, Afrikaners, and volunteer /pol/acks organized into a foreign legion. To keep the new union together and sovereign, South Africa rebuilt their nuclear programme and forced the expulsion of Chinese investors from the AU-controlled continent.

New Rhodesia is outside the African Union, and is considered a belligerent rogue state by the AU coalition leaders but receives discrete support from several nations as a counterbalance to African Union, who presently does not control the continent north of the Sahara due to the loose coalition of the African Mediterranean in resistance to integration.

Black populations in the former Deep South have agitated for independence as a North American African state separate from the NAU and are receiving support for their cause from the AU, who is using the member state of Haiti to train and arm insurgent forces for a "Bay of Pigs" at New Orleans.

Which ones? I'd say Europa. Not a planet, I know, but still a pretty cool place, and a good candidate for colonization. People could live in underwater towns.

>Europa has been colonized

>Minarchists and Anarchocapitalists have settled there, hidden from the governments by a kilometre thick sheet of ice and the depths of its oceans

>The differences between minarchists and anarchists on Europa are minimal, as state-owned floating cities don't tend to be bigger than the clusters owned by anarchocapitalist-congregations

>Native life on Europa is very primitive, the largest organisms being fish-like invertebrates; it is based on pRNA instead of DNA, which makes it interesting for genetic engineering

>Other libertarians view this minority with enmity

Also:

>Some libertarians, the Kappa, are undergoing heavy genetic and cybernetic augmentations to become capable of breathing, swimming and even living in the oceans of Europa for long periods

>Their modifications tend to include respirocytes, which increase the oxygen-capacity of the blood by two orders of magnitude, lung- and skin-tissue that can filter oxygen out of water and genes that code for the creation of pressure- and temperature-tolerant proteins

You can make a story great by having different, contradicting viewpoints, all of which have arguments in their favor. This allows the reader to choose for himself the viewpoint he finds most compelling after carefully waging the pros and cons. In fact, he can decide himself what is good and what is bad about an ideology. In other words, if you want to "save" this setting, you could try making a case for national socialism or communism instead of just bitching about the way it is now.

>on a board so slow that this thread has been on page 1 since its creation

That made me giggle. I'm saging because this is off topic, but I'm afraid there's a lot more to explain if you haven't realized that.

>contributing

I was one of the first ones to contribute, but nice try

 No.576

>>569

I suggest you keep contributing to it, as your old ideas were good (all old ideas were good). As it is now, the setting is far from being a war of ideologies. Add a few more sentient space stations and some mutants in radioactive wastelands in and the underwater-libertarians will become yet another curiosity in the universe. As for me, if it's so controversial and if you haven't gotten here from /liberty/ just to bitch about the libertarians, I'll be happy to keep further libertarianism to a minimum and focus on other stuff in the meantime.

>The Refugee crisis in Europe escalated quickly. In the Year 2020 the amount of refugees spiked due to an extreme winter hitting the middle east causing most of the remaining population to flee the war torn region to survive. Even the poorest of the poor tried their luck. However the Turkish government closed it's borders and began shooting upon those who dared to cross into their territory.

>This move was greatly debated, but it could not stop the fleeing masses to find other ways into safety.

>on the 7th of December 2020 the Israeli government issued order 8824, which allowed the use of UAVs against "foreign invaders crossing our borders".

>With nowhere left to turn, the situation turned desperate and the remaining population was now forced to either cross the deserts deeper into the east and face the risk of freezing/starving to death or being killed in one of the many conflicts that have arose since the fall of the Iraqi-government and the seizure of the area by Iranian, Saudi-Arabian and Turkish forces

>or trying to build/buy a boat in the Mediterranean-sea and crossing over to Europe or the already overflowing northern Africa.

>Casualties were great and only after about 75% of the fleeing population was killed or sold into slavery by one of the many slaving gangs roaming the area a treaty was reached that allowed a safe passage corridor into siveria

>The Russian government accepted most of the population in order to populate most of the extremely remote areas far north and east, the only catch was that the passage was extremely costly and almost every refugee had to take extremely high loans from the Russian government which essentially enslaved them to the state for generations to come

>This exodus was called the great roundup by many historians of the time due to the extreme violence and aggression used in many cases.
