Wh40k is not sci-fi.

It is Fantasy set in the future. Or how would you like to explain the warp?

Background info: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

Other than that, I suggest you read a rulebook, look up all the armies and then find a codex you like and read that. I didn't read anything after the fourth or fifth edition; I've heard that anything after the fifth edition or so is shit.

Qualitatively speaking, I think the renewed Codex Chaos Space Marines of the third edition (pic related) is the best codex. Great background info, and a billion ways to customize your army.

Lexicanum.

Love it. Live it.

Lurk some on /tg/, halfchans /tg/ id also ok, and downlowd the Rules/Codexes from there. They usually get posted in a 40k General or a PDF thread.

I would also suggest you go and look up 'vaults of terra' on Youtube. He gas a massive collection of lore-explanations.

Find your favorite army, reread the codex, make a 500 points list, buy the models on sale or at your Friendly Local Games Shop (FLGS), and THIN YOUR PAINTS!

I'd rather not discuss 40k here as well, because /tg/ is already partially dedicated to it, but having fantasy elements in science fiction isn't uncommon, just check the retro scifi thread for examples.

Bet, does anyone else feel like the movie Event Horizon was a 40k prequel?

Never seen it, but I want to.
