The game was being done by a small studio with no experience, not only that but Sony seems to have a weird way to treat their characters.

Its not just Spike that had this issue, this also happened with Sly, Jak, Parappa, Fat Princess and Kat, and they were all (except maybe FP) characters that were actually likeable, unlike Donte or E. Cole
