The problem is they have just absolutely no synergy to them. The body is way too manly / humanistic / buff, And the head is too babyfaced / cute. Proper lighting and poses and junk are all important yeah, but if i had to put the one thing that i think makes me good its properly abusing the view angle and DOF sliders.
The view angle is defaulted to 1.047, which is great for seeing your surroundings but it makes pics look really goofy and fisheyed (see right pic) if you halve it to around .500 you'll kill that effect (might have to go higher or lower depending on your surroundings)
Also DOF. It was a meme for a while there to shit on people using it and in fairness, some of the pics me and sky were posting were clumsy, but it hides the jagged edges of SL's ps2 graphics very well when you use it right.
Finally, find good places to take pics. I cop out a lot and just use my backdrop, tinting it to whatever colour i want, but there are tons of really pretty sims out there that are designed for this.
