Post your specs in in this thread. Tell us what you run SL at (a screenshot of your graphics settings would be nice) and what CPU/GPU you have.

Currently looking to build a PC for SL and a little vidya, and I'm choosing between a 290x and a 970.

With a Phenom II x4 and a geforce 750ti I get about 20 fps most places with most settings enabled at 128 draw distance. In crowds I have to drop shadows sometimes though, as they can drop me down to 5 or so.

So if my toaster can do it just about anything can run it at usable frames.

File: 1434176064990.jpg (1.03 MB, 1280x960, 4:3, New Battlestation.jpg)

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500k @ 3.8GHz (4.5GHz on offset started to BSOD every few days)

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 (ACX Cooler edition)

RAM: 12GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 @ 1333MHz (2x 4GB + 2x 2GB)

Storage A: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB (Windows + Programs)

Storage B: WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM (Media + Games)

Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 PRO Rev B3

PSU: Antec Earthwatts EA-650 650W 80+ Bronze

Webcam: Logitech C270

Speakers: Logitech Z313

Headphones: Superlux HD681 EVO

Microphone: Blue Snowball

Other:

-Wacom Intuos 4 Small

-3DConnexion SpaceNavigator

I run at full ultra (in a maximized window) with 2x the default ultra shadow resolution. 256 draw distance, and 6 non-impostor avatars (Believe it or not this setting actually makes the most difference, because avatars are basically FPS black holes). I keep DoF off unless taking pictures. Depending on the number of avatars I get anywhere from 60 FPS when alone in a well built sim down to like 12 in a crowded area. Avatars are -that- bad.

As for your GPU debate I've heard from a couple of GTX 970 owners that SL runs like total garbage on them. One friend said his HD6870 was faster when it comes to SL. My guess is for some reason SL is writing to the gimped memory buffer all the time instead of using the fast memory first, it's the only thing that makes sense with that specific card, so between those two, I'd suspect AMD's Nodrivers is the lesser problem. Personally I'd save the extra $100 or so and go 980, it's bound to run better than both of them.

It's also worth noting that SL is very CPU bound, so make sure you're getting a strong CPU (I'd go AMD 8350 or better or Intel Core i5 or better). If Intel go for a strong unlocked model, overclocking actually makes a bit of difference in SL.

Hadn't checked, but I'm sure it's fine. Overclock doesn't use that much power and it's only a 95W processor. You could run this on a 500W easy.

For shits and giggles, went ahead and plugged it into powersupplycalculator.net and it came up with the following:

Idle power: 91 W

Load power: 381 W

Recommended power supply: 530 W

Don't worry, I did my homework when parting it out :p

Display B: Acer B173 1024:1280 (5:4 @ Portrait)

I run in ultra, mostly defaults but particles are usually dropped down to 1024-ish as those seem to kill framerate. I get an average of about 40fps with shadows on unless there's a lot of people in view (20fps in the screenshot for example), this is at 4K mind.

...and on the topic of 4K, only worth it if you're making a Hackintosh. Even on Windows 10 it's not worth it, get 1440p or deal with lots of issues with 90% of programs not properly rendering (blurred or too small).

I'd say 290x but I'm worried you'll have problems, ATI seems to be the larger attraction to those, especially on Second Life.

 No.12090

>>12070

OP here

The 290x looks really sweet, but honestly all this thing needs to do is play SL and LoL. It seems like a NVIDIA card is a safer bet but I'm worried about the 970 having issues with SL due to the whole 3.5GB thing. I can't afford a 980 unfortunately.

I just want to play at 1080p with shadows and AO on. I don't jack up the shadow quality or anything like that.

What viewer do you use? I'd love to hear your experience with Black Dragon and your beastly PC.

 No.12092

>>12090

I might give it a try, but Niran recently quit development again, so it'll eventually break unless they keep giving it maintenance patches. :x

I'm not sure about the 970 having issues, Clix uses one and he doesn't seem to have any sluggish performance issues.

 No.12097

>>12090

If all you need to do is play SL with shadows and LoL a 960 would be sufficient, it's just not the crazy amazing deal the 970 is. However yeah, from what I've seen the 970 seems to have issues with SL, so I'd recommend staying away from it, as you never know if LL will fix compatibility or not.

 No.12098

>>12097

I run with a 970 and have not encountered any issues with SL. The 960 is super capable and will run anything you throw at it comfortably. The 60s are always the best bang for buck choice.

Don't buy that.

If you want a gaming laptop, there's a company called "Sager" that makes custom gaming laptops for about half of the price of any 'brand', they're sold by places like xoticpc.com. I've purchased one over a year ago to complement my desktop and for the value, performance and customer service (not that I've needed to use it), it's probably the best I've bought.

I paid about $1,300 for a Sager with 12GB DDR3, 250GB Samsung Evo SSD, 1TB 7200rpm HDD; I7-4770 and NVidia GTX 780M; on top of all of the usual bells and whistles. Can run most games at 60fps; doesn't seem to struggle too much when I switch the res to 4K when using my monitor either. It's basically the laptop identical to my desktop specs, except I just upgraded to the GTX 980ti SC on my desktop.

Hooowever, here's the obligatory: "If you want to game and unless you need the mobility, you should just buy a desktop for a third of the price which has better specs, yaddayadda, etc etc".

 No.12115

>>12108

I'm quite familiar with Clevo/Sager, and I checked out the XoticPC website. They have the same P34K (I like the form factor quite a bit) so I'll keep my eye on that.

The other thing I was looking into is the Clevo W230SD. It has a 960M 2G instead of a 965M 4GB,

965M has the same graphics core as the 970M which is appealing as opposed to the 960M which is just an 860M rebrand.

A 13 inch laptop would be qt as fuck and the clevo will be way easier to get parts for.

How well SL runs depends entirely on where I am, how many people are there, and how much dynamic lighting there is.

So it wildly swings from 120fps in completely empty areas to 20fps with a lot of people and dynamic lights.

 No.12525

>bottlenecked by shit code, OpenGL, or both

Neither.

It's bottlenecked by shit creators that can't optimize anything. Even the best hardware will choke on the sort of shit you see in SL, also I'm pretty sure SL still doesn't utilize SLI/Crossfire.

Also OpenGL wouldn't bottleneck anything, It's just as good as, if not better than, Direct3D. People just use the latter because it's ezmode to code for.

The current main guy Ebbe even called out the content makers who do a terrible job at optimizing when discussing VR and project sansar one time

http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2015/05/is-there-a-future-for-user-created-content-in-linden-labs-new-world/

"Last year the Lab worked to make the Occulus compatible with Second Life, though, as he pointed out, there are performance issues. The frame rates are too low. Altberg said this would be addressed in the next generation Linden Lab project. Additionally the Lab is working on how to “deal with sub-optimal” content.

“Users don’t necessarily know how to create extremely optimized content like a gaming studio would,” Altberg said."

Deflecting.

SL's codebase is shit. If I can get better FPS in Unreal 4 / Valley tech demos ...

 No.12563

>>12562

>Unreal 4 / Valley tech demos

So shit made by gaming studios that understand optimization? WHAT A SURPRISE!

Nobody's saying that SL is coded perfectly, it's not by a long shot. However given the shit it has to deal with, it works pretty fantastically (mostly by being fast and loose with the math of calculating where shit should be drawn, which is why when you're way up high in the air, you start to see things jitter).

A vast (and I mean VAST) majority of problems come from unoptimized content, especially shit like hair (which I've seen anywhere in the 100,000-750,000 triangle range) and more recently, mesh body parts like feet, hands, and heads (some bodies are pretty bad as well). I'd estimate the average avatar triangle count at around half a million or more, with the average texture count around 15 or so 1024x1024 textures (that's probably a low estimate honestly). To put that in perspective your average current-gen game character running in a more optimized scene is around 50,000 triangles (that's being extremely generous/hero level model for a single player game, MMO character models are closer to the 20k range), NPCs will be closer to around 10-20k (again being generous), with closer to the equivalent of 4 1024x1024 textures (a.k.a. a 2048x2048 texture, and again lower for games with many characters on screen), and this isn't even going into LOD calculations, which cause even more issues.

 No.12564

>>12563

If only LL had had the foresight to actually put some sort of cost system in place for avatar attachments. As it stands the current system outright incentivizes unoptimized content. It's not just that creators don't know what they're doing, though that makes things even worse.
