I've decided to take a look at SL, but I'm still so lost. I can't even figure out how the camera works or why the focus point seems to randomly change all the time. I want to learn how to work with all the items and the outfits and inventory and how to edit my character and all that, but the little welcome island at the beginning didn't teach me all that much. I can't help but think I missed something, like a tutorial area or something like that.

Is there a place where I can REALLY learn how SL works, or should I just try stuff and learn by trial and error?

I know I'm probably being retarded, but I feel really lost, and any pointers would be welcome.

Also, I had a few more questions:

How many people play now-a-days? Is the community big?

How is the RP scene? Are there many people interested in role playing in general, or are most just there to make friends and mess around?

Thank you for the help in advance.

I'm in Second Life for one year, but I still don't know all the features.

You can search for tutorials and videos on the Internet, however many are outdated. I'm not the best person to explain how it works, but at least I recommend use the firestorm viewer to play: http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/. It is much faster than the Lindens viewer.

about the community, SL has active 900,000 monthly users, according to this site: http://www.businessinsider.com/second-life-is-still-around-and-getting-ready-to-conquer-virtual-reality-2015-3

And about roleplay, I would say that is what makes SL stay alive. you can find ANY kind of RP there, WITHOUT exceptions. Just look for Sim with the PR style you are looking for, and for sure you will find, as long as the Sim is still active, beacuse there are several places in SL that have been completely abandoned.

Hello OP, how's it hanging? So you should be trying to ignore UI controls for the camera, and concentrate on practising your use of ctrl+alt+lmb. This will massively enhance your experience.

Firestorm does not outperform the official viewer. The official viewer outperforms most current TPVs (third party viewers) that are based on Linden Labs source code. Firestorm does boast a remarkable number of additional features lifted from other viewers. This makes Firestorm versatile and very popular.

Try to find where the creative folks hang around. It's not an easy task. In my experience, they are usually in Adult rated regions playing dress up, or roaming around SL causing trouble. Remnants of Earth is a decent role play region to check out. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tron/203/156/3527

SL is vast. But there is plenty to see and do. Just get the hook up with someone who has been around for some time. Good luck OP!

Hey, OP! Post your IGN so we can send you free stuff. I can't help you too much with interface issues because I don't use a common viewer, but I've given people the general walk around before.

There are some newbie regions: http://secondlife.com/destinations/howto/newbie

You might be able to find someone there to help you out, though it's best to just get inworld with someone more experienced and have them show you around.

Anyways, here's the answers to your questions.

Camming: Alt makes you zoom. Ctrl-Alt orbits your camera. Ctrl-Alt-Shift lets you pan. Zooming into your avatar a lot can activate first person (mouselook) view. Escape, or just moving around a bit, can reset your camera.

Try going to a store, and instead of walking around, stand in one place, and look around. When you get better, try doing hunts- they're events where shop owners leave out gifts with hints. The hunt items are often small, so you'll have to cam under chairs or behind panels to look for them.

Changing your avatar / wearing shit: Open up your inventory. To put items on, right click them > Add. Clicking "Wear" may knock off other items that occupy the same attachment point. The library works a bit funny so try experimenting with some freebies you find on the Marketplace.

Since you're new, you may be wearing a starter mesh avatar, which can be confusing. If your viewer has a worn tab, go to it, find the folder your outfit is in, right click it, and remove it. This should let you see what the real SL avatar looks like (significantly worse.) But its the one that responds to all the sliders.

To change shape and stuff, right click your avatar and click on Appearance. Shape sliders should be under there. On most viewers, I think that worn items should be there as well.

To edit items on your avatar, right click them and select edit. You should then be able to scale, rotate, or move the item (if it's mod.) If it's no mod, you can still move and rotate the object. If it's rigged mesh, you can't really change the position. The edit menu has a bunch of options for texture, properties, contents, etc. Go to the texture tab to change the tint on an item. If you want to select individual bits, click on Edit linked parts. To select the faces (areas of a single mesh/prim that can take different textures and thus can be tinted separate), there's an option for that as well.

Roleplay is a major activity on SL, for obvious reasons (character creation has few, if any limits, there's a chat system, and even a script system to roll dice/change the name you type with/etc.) Some communities are mostly into RP, and some like messing around. For example, your typical fantasy sim will be a bit serious and ask for logs and have a bunch of factions, but a furry ERP sim is more of an informal hangout place.

Join the /d/ group, go to the Deshima sim once you are accepted and tell people that you are new and need help. I've never seen anyone not get loads of assistance and be comfortable with how SL works within a few days when they do this.

You don't even need to do lewd things either if that isn't your cup of tea.

>You don't even need to do lewd things either if that isn't your cup of tea.

Well, too late. Already fucked a random guy on top of a car.

I'm starting to get the hang of things I think. At least I know how the camera works now, and I'm starting to get how to customize my character. Some things are still a bit odd to me, like the fact that some clothes or accessories are actual clothes, and others are meshes. Animations and scripts and all that are also still a bit strange, but I can see myself picking it up quickly as I explore.

I have a few more questions though:

Do people normally use the base avatar model with changes and a skin, or do they generally use meshes as their avatars?

Is there a way to change the color of a skin texture?

Sometimes when I activate an item, I get a message in the local chat from that item. Can that message be read by everyone or just me? How can I tell?

Tips for inventory management?

I also want to check out this /d/ group you speak of, how can I find it?

Also, thank you for the help guys, I honestly was expecting to just be called a fag.

Just to be clear, you don't need to do lewd things, but you do need to at least enjoy the idea of lewdness and be open to discussion of it and the like. That's the point of /d/ after all.

We're all fags here. We're on SL, after all.

As I am fond of saying, there are no 'normal' people in SL. Of course, there are no normal people in general, it's just that in SL there are a large number of people who are extremely open about the ways in which they are odd, and most others will admit to it with minimal prompting.
