On SL, we willingly trade efficiency (load time efficiency, render efficiency, physics efficiency, etc) for more polygons, and higher-resolution textures (see all those tiny hair accessories or necklaces where every individual part has its own 1024x1024 texture), even when we need neither unless we are literally stabbing our camera into someone's eyeball. It's bad in so many ways, but it's the truth of SL.
