While you're right, you do lose some of the advantages in para RP, sometimes those are worth losing for those involved. In other cases they are not. Sometimes SL is essentially just used as a framework to set up the scene. I had an ERP session last night where it was all in one graphical pose, the only visual reflection of what was going on was the setting, the starting pose, and the clothing the characters wore (and removed).
It is very close to play-by-post/forum RP when done that way, but with a few slight benefits offered by SL, and few (although some) disadvantages compared to a solely text format since the SL IM/Local Chat is set up pretty okay for RP.
That session was not inherently overall better than a quick one or two sentence per post back and forth RP. It just served our purposes at the time and was better for what we currently wanted (and generally personally prefer for intimate [well, one on one anyway, since we were in the middle of a store and anyone could come watch if they wanted] RP).
